An American revolution, indeed: GM may import cars
With Americans wary of bailouts and unemployment nearing 9 percent, now may not be the best time to announce more off-shoring.
That’s what GM may be about to do.
With taxpayer money in its back pocket and facing a June 1 deadline to get its act together, General Motors allegedly is talking about importing from Chine some of its cars for sale in America.
So, beginning in 2011, if you want an American-made car, you’ll have to do your homework. That Cadillac on the lot may not be an American car after all.
According to this AP story, the company may begin importing the China-made cars in 2011, and apparently plans to increase the number of cars it imports for sale here. GM’s China manufacturing plants now build cars sold in Asia. Though Americans may not recognize the models, GM is the best-selling foreign manufacturer in China.
The company has until June 1 to submit a finalized restructuring plan, or it will be forced to file bankruptcy, as did Chrysler.

Fitting. That’s one way for China to get something in return for all of that paper trash they are holding. I’ll bet this is a bone for them thrown by our beloved Dept of State (Hillary - who was recently seen begging for their continued fix)
………….No thanks, I’ll just drive off into the sunset behind the wheel of my Pontiac G6 that was made in Orion Michigan by Americans. Now and then I’ll take a glance into the rear view mirror and remember Americas better days.
Well, if GM imports cars here then that will most certainly fail and cause the company to FALL completely. Where is the insight here? In this day and age Americans would never buy a GM that has been imported into this company where they would most certainly buy a foreign automobile made here or even a foreign automobile imported here.
It is shocking the thinking of these executives and our leaders. It will destroy them just as having so many models and makes have. Toyota will be the top dog in the United States and, how ironic after operatives in 1979-1980-81 attempted to destroy their US sales by deceptive means with attempts to poison the American mind against the Toyota Company and their automobiles with lies. I remember this so clearly and it is something that I will never forget and it has stuck in my mind all this the awful deceit of it all.
It’s incomprehensible. George Bush was handed a nation at the pinnacle of history - not just national history but all of world history. And he left it a waste land.
I don’t think there’s been a bigger debacle in all of history.
I don’t think there’s been a bigger dunce cap in all of history.
This staggers the mind. It’s almost incomprehensible. How can a nation that consumes 15 million cars in a typical year only have one car company?
The United States, ruined, all because 600 people woke up on the wrong side of the bed in Florida one Tuesday in November in the year 2000.
And Obama, who campaigned on change, is basically kept the same economic policies.
This country has almost no hope. FDR, Truman, they are spinning in their graves, when they are not crying.
There’s only one car for me:

Tim - You really need to wake up from the ether or stop whatever it is you’re smoking. 600 People from Florida? Are you kidding me? Al Gore couldn’t even carry his home state of Tenn. What President ever got elected without being able to carry his home state?
George Bush was handed a nation at the pinnacle of history - not just national history but all of world history.
Say what? The economy was in recession, the tech bubble was bursting, and NAFTA was just gaining ground in the outsourcing of jobs. What country were you living in?
Heck of a job, Barry!
And what will be any different? They already “Import” from their plants in Mexico and Canada. Are they not a different country than the U.S.A.?
I would much rather see them import from Europe some of those fuel efficient Opel diesels instead of a gas guzzling SUV from China!
I guess Obama Motors isn’t going to be part of the “Buy American” strategy. Looks the value of classic American cars is gonna go up again.
Maybe we can import some of those ’50s Chevys and Packards from Cuba?
Si, se puede!
