Packing it in
Sarah Palin has announced that she will resign as governor of Alaska this month.
In a news conference from her home in Wasilla, Alaska, Palin announced Friday that she would resign later this month. The state’s lieutenant governor will assume the office of governor on July 26.
A CNN story quotes a source speaking on the condition of anonymity as saying Palin has accomplished all the goals she set out to accomplish. Much like our own Matt Blunt. (It took Palin only three years. Poor Matt had to use his whole single term as governor to accomplish all his goals.)
In her announcement, she took heavy aim at the media and “politics as usual” for making it difficult for her to govern the state. She said putting her head down and working would be the easy thing to do. So instead she’s quitting.
She laid out her accomplishments in her three years as governor, placing special emphasis on a pipeline project that would deliver, she says, energy independence. She claimed victory over “frivolous” ethics charges that were politically motivated, and pointed out how expensive those complaints were for the state and for the Palins.
She said she knows she can “effect positive change from outside of government.”
The governor was the subject of an unflattering Vanity Fair story this month.

Jamie Riley is the P-D letters editor and gatekeeper of the letters blog. Before joining the editorial page in May 2005, she was a reporter and page designer. Jamie lives in University City with her husband, Charles, daughter, Elise, and the world's best Jack Russell terrier, Logan, better known as Stinky.
She’s already created the most positive change possible. She’s going outside of government.
i for one am very impressed by the young woman and will certainly vote for her as i did when she ran with john mccain
Someone saying they’re impressed with Palin might as well be saying they’re impressed by fungi growing on a fallen tree.
In reply to “Stan”,
I respect differences of opinion, but…
What in the world could ever ‘impress’ you about this silly woman?
When asked, she genuinely could not name ONE major American newspaper. She thinks dinosaurs and people lived at the same time and that the earth is only some 6.000 years old! Her narcissistic megalomania rivals that of Donald Rumsfeld, a truly psychically disturbed individual… All in all, a very bad combination in a president, or a governor.
In my opinion, there must be some minimal education/intelligence level, some ability to think logically to hold high national office. Of course we just had 8 years of….
I am just curious as to what is the real reason/motive behind the madness of this decision of hers. This one is certainly beyond any guessing or anything that is obvious. I think this one we will just have to sit back, wait and see.
I think Charles Krauthammer’s comments the other day sealed the deal. She was never going to be elected President and she is smart enough to realize it. She now has the opportunity to cash in for millions of dollars in speaking engagements and a possible TV show. The outragageous comments by Letterman about her 14 year old girl probably also led her to think, “who needs this #$%^?” She can still articulate her views and live a great life and have much more fun. Her place in history is already secure. I don’t blame her a bit.
I believe Sarah Palin to be a good choice for president. She speaks with authority and intelligence. We need more leaders that view America on the
basis of liberty and freedom. I think Sarah would promote our nation as
a peaceful nation willing to help other nations in strife. I would welcome
her as a leader of our country who would deter senseless policies that harm
our image.
Anyone who does not like Palin is welcoming the end of One Nation under God and saying Hi to a One world government. I welcome someone who still has values as well as a sense of family. Hope to hear a lot more from Sarah, our country needs you.
Twenty bucks says EJ Rotert will say something stooopid in exactly
five, four, three, two… Ooops. Never mind.
Like I said during the campaign, can’t wait for her TV show.
You go Girl. I voted for you before and I’ll do it again.
But the next time it will be for real at the top of the ticket.
Anyone who goes with their heart is the one we need in the Oval Office
and not some kid who thinks he can.
Best regards to you and your fine family.
R.K. Egan, Indianapolis, IN
“She speaks with authority and intelligence.” — Ken Truman.
Huh? What channel did you see that on late last year?
We all love our kids, but to let them make this kind of decision?I don’t think so.Do we need the President asking her kids about the future of the country?I hope she never will be The One.
I wish a lot (all) of the Federal masters [pres, vp, 100x senators, 535 congressmen (and their thousands of staffers)] would follow her lead.
Jamie,
I see you’ve joined the “drag all past Republicans into a current story” crowd. Somehow, Matt Blunt made a quick trip northwest to Alaska to weigh in on the Palin announcement, and Vanity Fair became the kingmaker of American politics. Too bad nobody reads it but the P-D staff.
Time will tell whether Palin’s resignation is a prelude to another run at the White House, or, as NBCs Andrea Mitchell says, Palin is tired of the nasty side of politics and just wants out. I find it refreshing that a politician considers the cost to the taxpayer of fending off false accusations and innuendo rather than use the office for their own enrichment.
And it’s interesting that you mentioned only the pipeline deal in the Governor’s accomplishments, ignoring other issues like ethics reform and spending restraint. Still, like Matt Blunt, Sarah Palin will leave her state in better economic straits than most in this economic meltdown.
Anchorage Daily News-”…sounds more like self-service than public service.”
False premise in the title……….shows again the point guard metaphor by Palin and the ever blind Jamie has taken the head fake!
Whether Sarah Palin is presidential material or not is not the question. It is the fact that when she speaks, people listen and that is what scares the hell out of liberals…..that is why she is always under a barrage of attacks by the state run media and Obama…they simply must try to destroy that which is a threat, and Palin is a major threat.
Who the hell reads Vanity Fair anyway. How much did they pay the Post for that link? The real unflattring crown goes to the cowards who hide behind anominity to take their shots………Name names Vanity Fair…if you dare!
1Whisky… If Vanity Fair is still in business, someone obviously reads it. What I find scary isn’t about Palin. What I find scary are those people you reference who continue to listen to her — despite the interviews showing she can’t think on her feet and that she’s unintelligent and uneducated. And when pressed for an answer, she spouts off some crackpot lie (ref., she reads “all” the newspapers and magazines). You also have the interviews with people who know her that clearly shows she’s an expedient backstabber. Her stepping down here just highlights this last fault: she’s doing what’s only in her personal interest, while stabbing in the backs the people who elected her. The fact that a certain segment of the population still puts stock in her words shows critical thinking skills are dangerously lacking in these people. They are the menace, not Palin.
The guy was right, EJ Rotert did pipe in with something stupid. EJ, you need to fast forward to the present. It Dems and liberals like you who are listening to Palin and she is so spot on that they need to silence her…that is why you/they spend so much energy over Palin…she, and her platform scares liberals, and that means it is good for America and a threat to Obama style socialism…which is what I presume you voted for.
slamfist,
I agree with you. If I had to GUESS, I think that there is either a TV or radio show in the works for Sarah Palin. Watch out Rush Limbaugh! I think that he is about to get kicked to the curb.(lol).
1whisky,
Now who on earth of sound mind would be afraid of Sarah Palin in the political arena? It would be like Rush Limbaugh running for office, he would never become elected for anything but he does attract a certain sect of people, quite enough to make very successful radio show geared towards a very special sect and that makes him an extremely wealthy man.
I can see Sarah Palin being even more successful than Rush Limbaugh going in that direction. Your ilk will make her very rich and successful.
I knew that there had to be a motive to her madness. She is dumb as a fox and they ceratinly are not dumb, are they. I don’t see Sarah as unintelligent as some in error thinks that she is. She has her gifts, it is just that she don’t have the numbers needed to make it in politics and never will based on her platform, that is all that it is.(lol).
The truth be told none of our politicians have had what it take to run a good government because if they had what it took, we would not be in this condition today that President Obama is contending with presently. It has taken many, many, many years of incompetent politicians to get us to this place.
For every real or imagined gaffe committed by Sarah Palin, Joe Biden has been good for three, not to mention his numerous plagiarisms, self-aggrandizing thefts, misstatements, and exaggerations.
The difference, of course, is that Sarah Palin, at least for a while, presented a threat to the glorious ascension of “The One”, and for that it was essential that she be destroyed by the putrescence that is our liberal national media. And she was.
Sarah Palin dared to be what every politican knows one musn’t, and that was herself. The antithesis of Biden, she was humble, direct, honest and earnest, and for that she was belittled, dismissed, slandered and caricatured.
While Palin may not have been perfectly qualified to become vice-president or president, she was clearly at least as qualified as Obama, and as we have come to learn in a very short time, she is inarguably more worthy of being trusted with our collective wallets.
So while useful saps like E.J. Rotert regurgitate the “truth” about Palin as it is fed to them from a cynical socialist spoon, the rest of us might again ask ourselves why we never seen to have an opportunity to vote for real, honest people anymore, and instead are presented only with slickly packaged masters of deceit and debt epitomized by hucksters Biden and Obama.
1whisky… I’d suggest you take a Sociology 101 class. You need to get up to speed on the subject’s basics.
Dwalker - it was mentioned on a talk show this AM that she has been asked by NBC to have a talk show. Let’s see, Rachel Maddow or Sarah Palin?
Also, why was there so little in the press about SNL idiot Al Franken stealing the election? No one yet in the press has bothered to delve into his past and make personal attacks on him and don’t tell me there isn’t a lot of material there. He didn’t even bother to pay payroll taxes when he was at Air America.
The double standard in the media is a disgrace.
Safer than St. Louis… You’ve got to be kidding. Palin a threat to Obama? I’d relish the debates between the two if she ran in 2012. It would be like Socrates versus Elly May Clampett. Palin would probably break down and walk off stage. She’s already proven she’s a quitter.
WOW…….who ever tagged this EJ was spot on. Socialogy 101..what??? Palin a quitter?…seen anything in her background to suggest that?..not likely…EJ you have just gone for one of the best head fakes of recent times….go back and pick up you shoes!!
DWalker…….If the liberals and the state run media were not afraid of Sarah Palin, why o why do the spend so much ammo on her. Remember…you only shoot at what can hurt you………words to live by!
1whisky… It’s called informing the public. It’s what promotes and guards democracy. You really don’t get it, do you?
Centrist,
Could you explain to me how Al Franken stole the election? Was it the activist judges? Or are they just activist when you don’t okay with their rulings? Damn I guess I should have harped on Bush v Gore after the ruling. I didn’t, Supreme Court made its ruling and that was that. George Bush became OUR president. Yes, I did say our president.
EJ…………you can’t really be serious…….you can’t really believe what you just wrote……….the state run media is “guarding the democracy”? If you had capitalized the last word, you would approach believability.
1whisky… Please show proof of a state-run media.
In fact, please show proof of a liberal media. You know: `proof,’ as opposed to `hearsay.’ Ridiculously, hearsay is a favorite conservative tool, but it proves nada.
Jamie,
Shocked! Absolutely shocked that lynch-pin[pun-intended] of objectivity would “unfatteringly” write about any conservative.
Even more shocked that Jamie Riley would edit me for saying she could look like Palin if she pulled her hair back, put on some glasses and smeared gobs of vaseline on the lens!
Libposters get away with way worse daily, and she quietly acguiesces. But say anything funny about her…the claws come out.
Let’s see if she does it again.
I think Sarah Palin is by far the smartest conservative in America today. Just reading some of the comments on this thread convinces me.
And dr-debunk, you are really clever and really funny. How do you think up all those funny, funny comments? You must eat a lot of fish.

I was wondering what kind of damn fool tangent Rotert would go off on today. I saw the Couric/Palin interview and was thoroughly disgusted with how the perky little shrew persistently asked Palin what books she read, refusing to accept a general answer. You and every other loopy seems to think that makes Palin look dumb. A week before, the pesky little witch interviewed Joe Biden and he fed her the cock and bull story about FDR going on TV to calm people at the start of the depression, more than 3 years before he was elected President and 10 years before TV was successfully demonstrated at the New York World’s Fair. The perky little leftist was too dumb to know how dumb Biden was or tongue tied and unable to ask which book he read that in.
I’ve given you a You Tube of the idiocy so you can slink away in shame after seeing what starts at the 1:40 mark. Please respond with your sincere apologies for not knowing what is really dumb.

–And how Charles Gibson would look down his nose through his eyeglasses at her. As if intelligent folks can’t see the staging.
–The MSM is certainly obsessed with her, though. The “guys” at MSNBC must be gnashing at the bit.
–She is what she is, a fresh-face and voice that won’t conform to the “cognoscenti”, and doesn’t fit in to the MSM’s preconceived molds.
–That is one reason she is so popular with conservatives and moderates, and why the MSM MUST destroy her.
my gosh, ‘hart’…
three posts in a row…
don’t you have something meaningful to do…
besides posting your usual wandering, indecipherable, un-legible tripe…
and your usual complaining about the editors requesting you to follow the regulations…
under your usual multi-named ‘unknowing sage’-‘dr.debunk’-‘gamecock’ monikers?
“wandering, indecipherable, un-legible tripe…”…Do you mean ILLEGIBLE?
–Not surprised you can’t understand proper English, bean. Go take english 101, not too late to learn.
dr-debunk:
“Not surprised you can’t understand proper English, bean. Go take english 101, not too late to learn.”
I accept full responsibility for bean’s disappointment. I have neglected his daily required “See Spot run. Run Spot run.” that means so much to him as he moves his lips nearly in sync with the simple “Fun with Dick and Jane” primer readers.
So he’s past remedial then?
talking to yourself, now hart?
you need help…
be respectful to the nice men in the white shirts…
when they come to put you in your room.
–I’ll meet you anytime, anyplace, bean…you can see for good who and what I am.
Pick a police station if you’re afraid, until then, keep your illusions to yourself. Nobody else cares.

tin foil beanie can confirm that you are not Iconoclastic Sage anytime he chooses to call or EMail Jamie Riley. He and STL have an inexplicable fear that any contact with her will result in another threat of their service cancellation for hijacking the names of their betters.
–I’d still like to meet the little cockroach, just to confirm my perceptions.
–Beanie, where are you? come out from under the floorboards. Maybe if everybody turns out the lights.
1whisky,
Why must you ask something so obvious? Palin gets the ratings and that equates into $$$$$$$$. Now that is totally different than beinging taken serious enough to gain enough votes in a national campaign orv hold onto a seat where competance has become an issue.
Reddog - this is for you and explains it better than I can:

Yes, ACORN and the Democrats will be able to win every election. I hope they are happy, at least until you rubes wake up and smell the coffee.
Looks like a talking head job on Fox Comedy Station is in the works. She will have to dye her hair blonde though.
I Con… Sorry, but I didn’t realize this blog was about Joe Biden. Also, please show me where I’ve ever, ever posted that I’m a supporter of Biden. Ball’s in your court, ol’ cut-and-paste scribe.
EJ Rotert:
“I Con… Sorry, but I didn’t realize this blog was about Joe Biden.”
My comments were about the source of your unreasoned hate of Sarah Palin. An edited Katie Couric ambush of Palin was used to justify your insane rage against a decent and honorable woman when the You Tube made only a few short days before of the perky little shrew sucking up to a registered and card carrying buffoon for liberal political points missed your radar. I’m not asking you to be smart but fairness should not be out of the question.
The QUITTER from Wasilla needs to go back to high school and college. She obviously wasn”t paying attention the first time.

yet another lie from ‘the unknowing sage’-'doc bunky’-'rooster’…
the ‘unknowing sage’ from maryland heights…
has posted awful, vile, sexist statements on this board…
about his secret, hush-hush concealed favorite fetishes…
the female body, female hygiene, male homosexuality, etc…
and then he brazenly signs stl, garrison and my name to his despicable tirades…
remember this, debunked one…
here’s your own confession:
“…Yes, I have posted under the names STL, llbean and STLllbean whenever I find my identity has been stolen for an attempt at embarrassing me, but only AFTER my name was used in posting by the pus-brained liberal psychopath…”

then he cried crocodile tears to the PD board about his supposed identity theft…
and has them remove the unflattering comments he’s posted about himself…
but he left the crude, offensive, improper statements he puts on there about other bloggers…
and, now proud of himself, thinks this is cute…
now he’s using a home computer when he’s ‘the unknowing sage’ and a lap top when he’s ‘dr. debunky’…
to hide his dual postings.
you’re multiple monikers and multiple computers have been exposed…
get another gig…
this ones not working anymore.
–The offer remains cockroach. All you have to do is rub those hind legs together, I’ll follow the sound…
hard to deny my previous post…
isn’t it, little man.
remember this…
“…it’s funny that the first post on this thread was removed but my response to the filth remained. Other filth from the same fraudulent posters (plural) who identified themselves as Iconoclastic Sage was removed also. Neat trick, huh?”

want to keep playing?
I Con (aka Cut-and-Paste Scribe)… I love these claims of `ambush’ journalism involving a moose hunter (or, when involving more than two moose, `meese hunting,’ as no doubt Palin would refer to it). Not that `ambush’ journalism was involved, but even if it was, shouldn’t Palin at least condone it? I’m sure she’s ambushed a few `meese’ in her time. What’s good for the meese hunter should be good for the national media. I mean, when it all comes down to it, isn’t the modern workaday world just made up of glorified tribes with their hunting parties? And don’t each of us stalk off each day — figuratively — to slay a quarry, whether it be fixing a broken belt on a Maytag clothes dryer or a bartender mixing drink after drink to get the quarry on the other side of the bar drunk? No, even if ambush journalism was involved, Palin should `embrace’ it. Considering the journalists would be aping her meese-hunting mentality, she should find it flattering. What’s that saying about the most sincerest form of flattery? Instead, Palin cries foul (probably, in her mind, `fowl’) and goes off to cry in the corner, with a fishing pole in hand.
EJ Rotert:

Because you get off on liberal tripe (your paraphrased remark, not my opinion) doesn’t mean others should accept it. Your pain is obvious, Palin must have sportingly dispatched your favorite stump broke moose, one of the many beastly things that may also get you off.
“want to keep playing?”
–Don’t have a clue what you are on about. But I couldn’t quit you bean, you’re my favorite fool, sorry, I mean foil.
