Oblivious to the needs of Missouri’s hungry children
State Rep. Cynthia Davis, R-O’Fallon, is staking out a strong position on child hunger: She’s for it.
“Hunger can be a positive motivator,” she notes in the latest edition of her newsletter.
More precisely, Ms. Davis is against summer feeding programs for poor kids. They are an excuse “to create an expansion of a government program,” she says.
Ms. Davis chairs the House Special Standing Committee on Children and Families. In that position, she might be expected to have insight into child hunger in our state.
She might know, for instance, that about one in five Missouri children lives with hunger. That ties us with Louisiana for the nation’s seventh-highest rate, according to a report released last month by the hunger-relief charity Feeding America.
Or that the recession has pushed the number of poor Missouri kids who qualify for free or reduced-price school lunches by 8.3 percent this year, well above the national average.
Apparently not.
”While I have not seen this as a problem in my district, it is entirely possible that the (summer feeding) program is designed to address problems that exist in other parts of Missouri,” Ms. Davis says in her newsletter.
“The right way to solve this is with more education. If parents … don’t know how to serve nutritious meals, let’s help them learn to do that.”
In that spirit, she offers some helpful hints:
• “Families may economize by choosing not to waste hard earned dollars on potato chips, ice cream or Twinkies.”
• “Laid-off parents could adapt by preparing more home cooked meals rather than going out to eat.”
• “Tip: If you work for McDonald’s, they will feed you for free during your break.”
About 100,000 more people are unemployed in Missouri today than were jobless in 2007. Food pantries across the state are struggling to meet increased demand. The United Way of St. Louis and more than 100 area companies are participating in a food drive this week.
And the plain, tragic fact is some children have parents who aren’t particularly interested in caring for them. Ward Cleaver and Cliff Huxtable are off the television airways.
But Ms. Davis is skeptical about the need to feed poor children during the summer when schools are closed.
If — if — there really is one, she says, “churches and non-profits can do this at no cost to the taxpayer.”
Or maybe not.
“Most of our 18 (summer feeding program) sites are churches,” explains Rosemary Terranova, who oversees the program for St. Louis County.
“We’re trying to support churches that want to offer some kind of summer recreation program for kids,” she says. “They supply the staff, we supply the food.”
The program “has been a real blessing to us,” says Caroline Crenshaw of Bethesda Temple in Normandy, where 40 children attended day care last week while their parents worked.
The summer feeding program’s cost is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which pays about $1.81 for each breakfast served and $3.18 for each lunch.
Last year, 3.7 million meals were served by the summer feeding program at a total cost of less than $9.5 million. That’s a pretty good use of federal money.
In the same generous spirit as Ms. Davis, we’d like to offer a suggestion.
• Tip: When you chair a state special committee on children and families, you probably ought to learn something about the needs of children and families.

The Post didn’t publish the entire section of Rep. Davis’ newsletter, so it’s not possible to determine her exact motives, but one aspect of childhood hunger in America is kind of odd: In Ameriuca today, a recognized symptom of poverty is childhood obesity. It would seem to be a double tragedy if poor children are not only disadvantaged economically, but are also destined for a life of health problems caused by a poor diet.
Is it enough to simply hand out food? For families who are temporarily down on their luck due to the economy, the answer is probably yes. For the chronically disadvantaged, a combination of economic opportunity and education is the long-term solution. Maybe Ms Davis has unwittingly provided a public service if her newletter stirs a discussion that goes beyond the present economic crisis.
Davis apparently knows a heck of lot more about the needs of children than the limousine liberals on the PD editorial board.
Living in a community where a large proportion of grocery transactions are paid for with food stamps, I have observed that some use this supplement wisely, while others do not. I have met some people who would starve without food stamps, and others who sell them for cigarette money and eat from food pantries. I know one food stamp mom who suffers from obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes - and who has been hospitalized for these ailments, paid for by Medicaid, three times in the past eight months. I know another food stamp mom who uses her benefits to purchase appropriate food for her family, all of whom are quite healthy, and for whose benefits I am happy to pay.
As for the summer food program, I’ll agree that it seems like an idiotic thing to attack. Her idea that the churches are going to do it could only come from a comfortable, suburban person: In fact, while churches in O’Fallon are building new facilities, churches in areas which actually serve free lunches struggle to keep the lights on. Many of these urban churches already provide some sort of charity, but feeding the neighborhood is beyond their means. And most of the suburban people I know think that if they give a gift to Angel Tree, or perhaps work a shift at Larry Rice’s Thanksgiving dinner, they’ve done their part.
But if churches aren’t providing free lunches over the summer, why aren’t parents? If you are receiving food stamps, you ought to be purchasing food for your family - including lunches. I’ve read the perennial laments about the inadequacy of the food stamp allotment, but as I’ve said before, it’s almost as much as my family spends on groceries. And if you run a little short, maybe you should start shopping at Aldi like we do.
I have observed one such program first hand, about five years ago, at a St. Louis city recreation program. The lunches they were providing were barely better than Lunchables. If that’s what we’re getting for $3.18, we’re getting ripped off.
I agree with Go_Fish, Rep. Davis clearly understands the issue of hunger better than the Post Editorial Board. As a parent, my first responsibility is to care for my children. Of course there are situations where, like my grandmother had when she became a young widow with children, charities needs to step in to help in dire circumstances until people can get back on their feet. But why are there so many parents that I know with with i-pods, flat screen tv’s and dvd players, using food stamps and government programs at school to feed their children breakfast and lunch? It’s human nature to take what is offered for free. But limousine liberals think they can raise our kids and take better care of them (through the government) than we can. Wrong. I guess it’s also human nature for some politicians to try to gain power by handing out freebies. Get out of the way and stop trying to run everything!! Parents can make mistakes, but when you take all the responsibilities away form being a parent, they will of course spend their money in other ways. If a mom can learn to use her i-pod, she can certainly learn to make a scrambled egg for breakfast, or to pack a sandwich for lunch. We really, really can!!!
You think a free lunch is bad? Check this out:

How do you spell abuse? F O O D S T A M P P R O G R A M
…”And the plain, tragic fact is some children have parents who aren’t particularly interested in caring for them.”
So the taxpayers must care for them; even to the detriment of our own children and grandchildren and the nation’s solvency.
For that “tragic fact” you can thank Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. With vigorous support from the PD, the liberals enabled and encouraged births to mothers who had no means to support or care for children. With AFDC it was actually a cottage industry for quite some time.
In the name of liberal “compassion” generations of unwanted children have suffered desperate lives, void of parental guidance and financial support. Their lives are dependent on big government and are often prematurely ended by street violence or drug abuse.
Hunger is simply another of many ruses the liberals use to grow government. Most people are too busy watching American Idol or the ballgame to recognize the scam being pulled by the PD Editorial Board and their leftist cronies.
Wake up folks. It is not about children. It is not about homeless indigents. It is not about poverty. The trillions of dollars in Great Society social engineering is about one thing, only. Government power to control the lives of everyone in accordance with the collectivist ideology of the Left. Self reliance is blasphemy to government worshipers. Dependence and obedience is the Holy Grail that empowers the leftist ego.
…”Tip: When you chair a state special committee on children and families, you probably ought to learn something about the needs of children and families.”…
Such arrogance, sanctimony, and sarcasm are simply a result of their own denial about their true motives. Otherwise facts, fat kids, and street crime would have them taking a closer look at the bloated government programs they devise.
Notice the “generous spirit” of the Editorial Board involves confiscating taxpayer dollars rather than donating their own dollars. Such generosity! I also don’t expect to run into any of the PD editors helping out at the food bank this weekend. They will be too busy writing stories to ridicule anyone who doesn’t subscribe to their collectivist, statist, doctrine.
What an idiot. Yet another reason why Missouri is quickly going the way of West Virginia. Don’t even get me started on the bozos who elected this moron, or the typical “hardworking” StL Today commenters who apparently have enough free time to jump on every single story to rant about “leftists”.
It’s a pity there aren’t more comments from folks who are appalled about this story. Oh wait, those would be the parents being attacked, the ones working at McDonalds and whose only break is spent gulping down a totally non-nutritious yet *free* meal. If they only knew how this elected official feels about this committee she’s on (whose goal is to ensure that children don’t go hungry during the summer when school is out). But sadly, they probably have no idea because they can’t afford a newspaper, or a computer, or internet, or even free time to go to the local public library to surf the net there because they’re working at places at McDonald’s and what free time they have, the library is closed. At least they’re getting a free meal during their breaks. Too bad this elected official wants their kids to go hungry (and get motivated thru their hunger). You’d think if hunger was such a wonderful motivator, third world countries would be fabuously wealthy from all the brilliant ideas their starving children would come up with.
It is not potato chips and Twinkies that cause obesity, it is all the potatoes, pasta’s, rice, beans, process meats and other cheaper fatty foods that stretch a poor family’s budget that cause obesity because, healthier foods are not affordable.
Of course Cynthisa Davis knows how to purchase and eat healthy foods, she just has never attempted to do it on a poor family’s food budget. People like this lady just irritates me to no end, but that is my short coming.
However I do want to mention that Sam’s Wholesale Food Club now accepts food stamps. Sam’s carry affordable large bags of frozen green beans, broccoli and large containers and bags of salad mixes at extremely affordable prices where a struggling family can now eat more healthy cheap.
I don’t know anything about possible any membership breaks but hopefully social services is sharing this information about Sam’s acceptance of food stamps because many of the bulk foods are perfect for large families and much, much cheaper than regular grocery stores. This is the best thing on earth that Sam’s could have done for struggling families. I am very happy that Sam’s are taking food stamps because now many struggling and poor families because they can now eat much healthier and afford it.
Also,
Save-A-Lot, the only place I purchase bags of baking potatoes, huge ones and cheap 10 lb bag 3.99.
Audi’s, go there to purchase whatever fruit they are featuring specials on i.e., apples, oranges 25 cents each or grapes 1.29 per carton. Bread is also very cheap there and they have a whole grain bread as good as any you will find in the Bread Company for cheaper than $1.00 per loaf and white bread I think is 69 cents. Milk is cheaper there also.
It is very difficult for many of our disadvantaged poorer families to take advantage of many of these things because of transportation and their geographical locations and these places not being geographically accessible and maybe churches can help families once a week, month etc… through some type of transportation assistance.
Tip for Missouri: The reason why you have the 7th highest child hunger rate is because you continue to support wingnut whiners like Davis. This is absolutely pathetic. Just stay in Missouri and don’t infect the rest of the US, you know the parts that actually have intelligence and care about kids.
Ms. Davis looks well-fed to me. I wonder what SHE had for breakfast and lunch today? How often has SHE gone hungry due to poverty?
Looks like she buys into the theory that FAT PEOPLE are responsible for all our Country’s problems. Not War, not Thieving Banks & Corporations, not Corrupt Politicians and Religious Leaders.
Oh Never! It is the FAT PEOPLE who are to blame for everything.
Note to those who think Davis is so right: Not all poverty is the fault of the people suffering from it.
I presume that there are people in Missouri working at McDonald’s because their factory job got exported to China?
Or who have too many kids to feed because the school board killed sex education programs?
Or who have to work (and shop) at Wal-Mart because none of the other stores in the area could compete, and so all their money goes to Bentonville instead of staying local?
And yet, you continue to vote Republican, despite the clear, consistent and ongoing proof that none of them care about anyone but the hyper-rich.
I think I’m going to stop telling people that my dad was from Missouri. With idiots like Davis, and bigger idiots like those defending her in these comments, I’m honestly ashamed to have any connection with you people.
I’m awfully glad to live in a state where we actually feel some responsibility to help those who need it. Not that we always succeed, but at least we care enough to try.
“Hunger can be a positive motivator.”
This woman should have her ovaries revoked. You kinda expect men to be this clueless and cruel about child hunger but this thing is a woman and a mother. Unfit to be a Representative, unfit to reproduce.
SHE IS FAT. MAYBE SHE COULD DONATE HER FOOD TO A HUNGRY KID.
All I have to ask Rep. Davis and others commenting here….
WWJD?
As soon as Rep. Davis is willing to change the House of Representatives salary to $5,000 annually, (thus saving the taxpayers millions), then I would be willing to hear her opinion on people who also make under $5,000 a year. Till then, she she should be required to apologize, in person, to every taxpayer who is injured by this “oversight” capacity. I believe the best way for her to check would be door-to-door. Starting in O’Fallon.
Yet another leader demonstrates not an unwillingness to help– but such an ignorance of the actual problem they campaign to make it worse. As a Community Partner with the Harvester’s Food Network in KC, MO, I have become educated on how chronic hunger is defined by the US Food & Drug administration– a concept defined by MORE than obesity which occurs in SOME cases– not all as Davis generalizes. When addressing the needs of a child living in poverty, one must understand the culture of poverty and the resources unavailable to people living in it. So many of the illustrious and judgmental statements below indicate the same ignorance Davis portrays– it is neither a choice limited to beans over twinkies at the check out line nor is it how food stamps are spent. The problem encompasses a lack of emotional and spiritual resources, and paucity of support systems and acquired skills which perpetuate the cyclic nature of the problem. I hope that Davis develops a desire to better understand the issue and educate herself—or that some “taxpayer” she seems so bent on protecting fiscally but not, I daresay, socially decides to run for office in her stead. Our communities, states, and nation cannot grow and evolve on a global level by telling others how to fix the problems themselves. Neither will they grow by throwing money at the problem. Rather, we must create effective support systems, discipline, and relationships which foster trust and growth for those who need it most—again, a concept elusive to Davis, an employee of the taxpayers. Now THERE is a waste of my money.
Wow…reading the posts here makes me feel like I have gone back in time…”limousine liberals”…really? “Great Society social engineering”….have you people been living without TV, radio, or access to newspapers for the last 30 years? Reagan ran against welfare queens, won, and dismantled many of those “leftist” programs that you are attacking…the ones that he didn’t get, Republicans stripped the funding for with Clinton’s support in the 90’s. What remains is not enough to live on even if you are gainfully employed…several cable news shows have done stories on people, including a few politicians, trying to live on food stamps…they found what a few of the posters here pointed out…the only things that you can afford to buy are starches…potatos….not fresh vegtables…not lean meats….healthy foods are expensive.
I am sure that most of the posters here who defended this ignorant woman consider themselves Christians…have you learned nothing about Christ’s teachings…the basic tenants of Christianity include loving thy neighbor, charity, and above all protecting the children, the sick, and the poor.
How can you sleep at night knowing that children are going to be hungry in Missouri? Hunger is a “motivator”…how heartless and how ignorant.
It would be helpful if the government didn’t pass laws or require fees restricting people’s ability to be self-reliant. Once upon a time in this country, the working poor in this country could go out and hunt, fish, grow vegetables and raise chickens in their backyard. A woman could open a salon in her own house. A man could have a shop out of his garage. Today, only one of those activities is still legal and without fees charged…but lawmakers are openly talking about restricting that, too. Some are even talking about putting higher taxes on basic food stuffs because we might turn a bag of flour into a 50 cent loaf of bread. Once upon a time, a man could even build his own house without the government sticking their nose into his business.
And equally the same, two minimum-wage jobs 50 years ago got you into a middle class neighbhorhood….two minimum-wage jobs today still keeps you below the poverty level.
The government created the poverty in this country. And don’t blame lefties or righties…they’re just two hands of the same body. They’re both responsible. And neither are going to fix it because they love for us to HAVE to turn to them.
I have a solution far more efficient and humane than starving these children, and I’m sure my conservative friends will love it. My solution prevents children from ever entering into these horrible welfare queen led families that are either unwilling or unable to properly feed and care for them.
It’s called abortion.
I have to go with Rep. Davis on this, and I have gone to bed hungry. I have been homeless with my two young step children and my ex- husband. And during that short period of my life I saw many hungry children. It’s very sad. HOWEVER, the Federal government is not responsible for feeding hungry children. That is a job that needs to be local. For instance, neighbors, communities, churches, even local city governments would be okay if the citizens of that community vote it in, but when you give the federal government that responsibility you also are giving them more power! Not to mention they suck at anything they do. If someone really cares about hungry kids then let them get together with other private citizens in there area (yes this might take away from your r&r time) and divise and implement a plan to feed the children. You might even get to know the parents. Is there anything YOU can do (not big gov.) that would help the parents be able to feed their children in the future. I love children but it is time to take back not only our rights from big government, but also our responsibilities.
Hunger works! People who are hungry worko get food! This rep is right on the money!Teach them to fish! Power to the taxpayer not the payee!
Hunger works! People who are hungry work to get food!Teach them to fish!Power to the taxpayer not the payee! No welfare no more handouts!Welfare is modern slavery!
Phyllis from Texas,
You state: ex-husband and step children? So, you were able to walk away from that situation because those step children were not your responsibility and you were not their mother but, it was only a voluntary position that wasn’t a ballgame for you where you could emotionally walk away from it not to worry where their next meal would come from? Now correct me if I am incorrect.
jew001,
Are you saying hunger works for children? Only a totally removed from reality individual could believe such a thing.
It is pretty easy and next impossible for adults to go hungry but with children added to anyone’s equation it can become a very likely possibility.
It is easy to live by your wits and to work earning enough money for any one adult to take care of him or herself and survive and not go hungry but when children are added to the mix it is an entirely different ballgame. The scary thing here is that so many adults parade around as being people with good sense when they truly do not have good sense and to make matters worst, so many of these people are in positions of leadership and authority like this Cynthia Davis State Rep. lady.
People just need to accept the reality that we will always have poor people in this country that we have the responsibility of tending to. It is no different than biblical times; we will always have them and be responsible for those who need a temporary lift or long term or lifetime care.
Lastly, we can depend on individuals to do the right thing because they have grown more self-centered as time have passed on will continue to because of the changes in society everyone have difficulty looking beyond their own needs and wants so we have no choice but to look to government if the needs of the poor will even come close to being meant.
Its all so lovely thinking otherwise but you same people stating that people and churches are the solution, just look at yourself and your church count how many families or children you have personally assisted outside your own bloodline, if even any in your own blood line outside your immediate family? As far as Churches, most of those are need most of the money that they bring in just to keep their buildings afloat with little money available to even assist their own members who are in need and that is truly a shame.
Actually, I didn’t walk away for nine years (because of the children) Come to find out my ex had a developing coke problem and I knew I couldn’t take the kids with me so I stayed. We ended up living in a ghetto type neighborhood for a while in El Monte, California. Rent was cheap ($100 a week) and drugs, prostitution, and gangs were the norm. Then when both kids were old enough for school (the place was too dangerous to leave kids alone in) I was able to get a job. I didn’t know how to do much. I was a high school drop out and had started drinking when I was nine myself, but I realized that there was more to life and I wanted these sweet kids to have more. So I got a job waiting tables. I got the kids off to school, took public transit to work if I had the fare. Often I just walked the mile and a half to save money. We moved into a slightly better neighborhood and the kids were a little older so I could work more because they could spend a little time alone. Eventually we divorced, but only because the kids were old enough to be okay he never hit them only me.
Anyway, the point is there are a lot of compassionate people who if they have any money left after the government extorts it’s share, will love to help hungry children. It is not a job for government. If they will stay out people will step up.
Just an example of how government can mess up the simplist of things:
My now seventeen year old daughter used to go feed the homeless people of Houston with her youth group every month. That stopped when Houston passed a law saying that if you were going to feed homeless people you could not bring home made food or even food prepared in your church kitchen. You can now only feed the homeless hungry people from establishments that have annual state health inspections. The homeless people I’ve known really weren’t concerned with the state inspections.
I think a few of the posters are misunderstanding the article. They are arguing that the Federal government should not be feeding children that churches and local communities should be responsible for feeding these poor children as if this were some new idea that has not been tried yet. Again, I have to ask, have you missed out on every news report, cable show, and article about how we already work to feed the hungry. The Federal governmnet doesn’t actually run or operate these school caferterias. Food and sometimes money are distributed through state and local governments to keep these programs going. The article clearly states that even local churches are involved in this. Churches already help. Local food pantrys already collect and distribute food…local charities already do the things that posters here are suggesting…these are not new ideas…but they aren’t enough…even with all these people helping, we still have children going to bed hungry. Neighbors are already helping neighbors but it isn’t enough. These programs exist because we still have poor hungry children who can’t take care of themsleves…who can’t get a job (becuase they are children)…who would be an even bigger burden on society through higher crime rates and higher medical bills if we did not feed them.
What did all these hungry kids do before welfare?
Jamie Gump is right. Pay (lack thereof) is also a positive motivator. Let’s take Davis’ away and see how many strawberries she can shove down her piehole before the money runs out.
I’m trying to figure out why Cynthia wears a cross? Clearly it has nothing to do with Christianity…
I’ve lived on one meal a day from McDonald’s, while I waited the first few weeks for my paycheck to begin. By the end of the first month, I was bleeding internally from a multi-systemic infection. Nope, not joking.
Ms. Davis, I suggest you try it sometime! You know, just so you can find out what it’s like. Surely it will motivate you in some way.
To wacko_liberal, who asked: “What did all these hungry kids do before welfare?”
…They died.
This woman should resign from her position. What a mean and insensitive witch.
I’ll bet she is a member of the “Jesus wants you to be rich” theology that is currently popular….Sheesh- are those people truly that horrid or are they just ignorant ?
Boy, you can hear the banjos playing in Missouri from here.
It is one thing to be ignorant and completely out of touch, but it is another to publicly advertise it. Is this the most heartless rube in government or just the stupidest? These programs feed children who do not have food on their tables. Obviously (maybe not to DuhDavis) the vast majority of these children are not of age to get a job at McDonalds. (hint: When you get voted out of office next term go apply your privileged ass at McDonalds and see how many of your bills you can pay.)
This is the most difficult financial times that most of us have faced in our lifetimes. Hard to believe you are as ugly on the inside as your are on the outside. Hunger does not motivate anyone. It cripples. But you have fiercely motivated me and I have begun to organize as many of my friends and colleagues to collect donations for whomever your opponent may be in your next election.
Here’s to the day your reap what you sew you moron.
Ms Davis, you don’t look as if you are hungry with your strawberries. Say, are you a mother? If you have children or maybe grandchildren, have they ever gone to bed hungry because your pantry was bare? What excactly are you trying to say??? On the contrary, I may not want to understand your way of thinking, it is way to far out there. How can you be a state rep. with such UNBELIEVABLY sick ideas. Lady maybe YOU should be in the position of the children . Maybe you should have to experience hunger for a while. Maybe you are the one who should be hungry enough to get a job at Mc Donalds so you can look forward to a free lunch. The people that I see working at Mc Donalds are already the ones that are hungry, or do you think that adults working at Mc Donalds are making enough money to feed their children??? On top of your crazy way of thinking woman, have you ever heard of fast foods being the most unhealthy food??? If you have children I truely feel sorry for them!
Phyllis from Texas,
Heck, if you were an alcoholic and your ex-husband a coke addict, do you really expect us to believe that you had the funds to feed and care for your children not even working full time waiting tables and, without a high school diploma? Money had to be coming from some other source in order to properly feed and care for you and your children not to mention your addict ex-husband?
I truly don’t think that you are recalling things as they really were due to addictions back then or it was truly a miracle.
It’s too late to defeat Cynthia Davis, this is her last term, a perfect example of when term limits are a good thing.
But she’s pushing for her husband Bernie, who is as heartless and daft as she is, to take her place in the house.
Did you see that Olbermann named her the World’s Worst Person this evening?
I suppose that all of those who agree with Ms. Davis from O’fallon have had the personal good fortune to watch their own children starve, or have had the great advantage of experiencing starvation as children themselves. It’s a wonderful ‘motivating’ experience.
Death is a great motivator, too. Maybe it would be a good idea to withhold medical care from sick and injured children…ALL sick and injured children, not just those of the poor. If enough of them die on a regular basis there will be so much more ‘motivation’.
After all, that motivation factor is all-important. We need more children who’ve suffered brain damage as a result of hunger or are somehow physically disabled so that they’ll be ‘motivated’ to perform the menial tasks that OUR children shouldn’t have to perform when they grow up. (If by ‘our’ we mean those of us who can afford to delude ourselves into believing that we’re much more important than poor people who are obviously defective subhumans…you know, the very comfortably delusional ivory tower elites, like Ms. Davis.)
Suzy-
Yes, Cynthia Davis did make the national news by being Keith Olbermann’s worst person in the world on Countdown tonight. I looked up the complete newsletter on Ms. Davis’ website, and it was every bit as horrible as I thought it would be. Every bit of Ms. Davis’ commentary is just that–commentary. It is her opinion, and there is nothing resembling statistics! I shudder to think that District 19 might elect Ms. Davis’ husband to her post.
I wish I could say that I moved from the St. Louis area to Las Vegas to find a better class of politics. Unfortunately, we have our own idiots in the form of Governor Gibbons and Senator Ensign; both of them, like Ms. Davis, have made the national news for their narrow-minded, act first and think never ways. (did I also mention that all of the above are Republicans?)
Missouri should be so proud…one of their own made it to the big time…Worst person in the world on Countdown.
One poster mentioned that Ms. Davis is term limited…while that might be a good thing that she will be kicked out it also serves a a reminder that term limits can cull the gene pool of elected officials…she apparently hasn’t bothered to learn anything about her job and will be replaced by someone else who knows nothing…sometimes, experience and job knowledge can be a good thing.
Here is the link to the full newsletter from Rep. Davis’ website…

Not only was it the most intellectually ignorant and socially disheartening thing I’ve ever read…. I think it gave me cancer…
-Sad Saint Charles Resident (thankfully not in her district)
So “Ms. Davis chairs the House Special Standing Committee on Children and Families”, but she’s only aware of those in HER District? What’s up with that?
More heartless Republicanism. Great, just great. Just what our country needs.
Ms. Davis, I know your theme song.
TNUC by Grandfunk Railroad. Figure it out.
Representative Cynthia “Whack-Job” Davis is what happens when people vote their religious beliefs instead of common sense.
I am a resident of the 19th district (the Fightin’ 19th!), and Mrs. Davis has been an embarrassment — to those of us that use our brains — for YEARS. From anti-abortion terroristic bills to objecting to a colleague not rising to speak on the floor of the House because he was in a WHEELCHAIR, Cynthia Davis is as “Clueless” as Cher Horowitz in the movie of the same name.
Still the Bible-thumping, right-wing, rabid sheep of Saint Charles county continue to return this mental midget to the halls of Jefferson City with alarming margins of victory. Why? Because she is against everything they are against and she is for everything they are for.
How is it possible that otherwise decent people can support this crazy lady? Even more incomprehensible is that Representative Whack-Job is:
Chairwoman of the Special Committee on Children and Families
Chairwoman of the Interim Committee on Poverty
Member of the Health Care Policy Committee
Member of the Elections Committee
Member of the Special Committee on State Parks and Waterways
How does a person with no working knowledge of ANY of these issues end up not only as a member, but chairing these committees?
From her stint on O’Fallon’s Planning and Zoning Commission, to her tour of duty in Jefferson City, Cynthia Davis has demonstrated that she has absolutely no business in public service. She should, instead, return to running her Christian bookstore and making sure that there are no pornographic videos in the back rooms of convenience stores.
A rotting turnip could do a better job in the State House.
Just take a look at this woman. Clearly she’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Shame on the people who would elect a dimwit like this to represent them in any way, shape or form.
I’d also be willing to wager that Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and the rest of them agree with her. It was Rush who stated that people who exercise and take care of themselves are part of the reason why our healthcare costs are so high.
What a princess. Even Marie Antonette had a better answer.
As an embarrassed citizen of the 19th district I hope that not only does Ms Davis step down from her committee-Special Standing Committee on Children and Families, but she also steps down from her position as a state rep., because she is an embarrassment to the citizens of O Fallon, she makes us look like buffoons for voting this uncaring women into office multiple times.
Perhaps she could donate her part time salary of 32,300 dollars to feeding the hungry children in our great state, because the certainly deserve it more than she does.
She needs to read some of the books that she carries in her Christian book store ”Back to Basics” located in O Fallon Mo, because Jesus taught us to take care of the poor and hungry. If people stop patronizing her store perhaps she will have a little more empathy for the poor, struggling, and hungry children in our state, and then she can get a job at Mc Donald’s to get that half price meal so she isn’t hungry.
Rep. Davis is right on this issue. All Americans are responsible for themselves and their own children. Governemnt didnt produce the kids, all you parents did, so pay for it out of your own money! period.
Pure and utter stupidity is a great motivator to get smarter, but I suppose in Ms. Davis’ case, we can make an exception.
This just proves that Ms Davis is not Pro-Life, but merely Pro-Birth; because she clearly doesn’t care about the children after they are born.
I hope that people that are in the market for Christian books don’t shop at Ms. Davis’s store Back to Basics Christian Bookstore - 1002 Highway K - O’Fallon, Missouri 63366 - (636) 281-3800, because she should be busy reading up on the books in her store. Jesus would be ashamed of Ms. Davis.
Ms. Davis obviously knows NOTHING about the summer feeding program, it’s purpose is to provide nutritious meals for children to be consumed at a congregate feeding site. I worked with this program in KY for 17 years and it’s probably the best of the nutrition entitlement programs, definitely the fairest. Now let’s look at Ms. Davis herself, is she a nutrition expert or does she just know how to eat (obvious from photo). It doesn’t appear she always makes correct food choices herself, and I am qualified to say that as I’ve been a Registered Dietitian for 31 years.

So, you are for sex education, free condoms and other birth control measures, or abortion? because that’s how you keep people from reproducing. You know, making babies? babies that you don’t want to pay for? Really. How odd. You say you agree with Cynthia “Bat-[deleted] crazy” Davis that everyone should take care of all their own kids, but you fail to notice that Mrs. Davis’s kids are living off of your state tax money too. Oh, and so is her husband. That piddly Christian bookstore of theirs makes no real money. That’s why the traffic lawyer gets the front half of the building. That’s also why Mrs. Davis loads up her purse with leftovers from luncheons and other functions.
Why else would she be pushing for her husband (a real mental case in his own right) to take her place in Jefferson City? She’s term-limited but she needs the roast beef sandwiches and cookies.
This is terrible from an editorial board. Many of the quotes they used are taken waaaay out of context. Her actual stance is a pretty hard line, but it’s a *lot* more reasonable than it’s made out to be here. Shame on you guys. Let’s have a discussion about the real issues. This kind of BS reporting is what gives journalists a bad name.
Oblivious is too kind a descriptor.
The American Academy of Pediatrics completely disagrees with Rep. Cynthia Davis stance on hunger being a motivator:
I wonder what her kid’s Pediatrician thinks of her comment….

Study findings underscore the importance of clinical recognition of child hunger and its outcomes, allowing for preventive interventions and efforts to increase access to food-related resources for families.
She’s says that “children” (teenagers) between the age of 16 to 18 should get a job to pay for their own food. Big deal.
