‘Repeal the 2nd Amendment’
Calls to amend the U.S. Consitution in more recent times typically have been the province of political conserviatives (Think flag burning, gay marriage, abortion. Exception: Equal Rights Amendment).
But now the Chicago Tribune’s editorial page has suggested that the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution, which provides that the right to keep and bear arms not be infringed be repealed.
The editorialists, reacting to the Supreme Court’s decision last week finding that the amendment protects an individual right to bear arms, concede that the repeal is not likely to happen anytime soon.
“Some view this court decision as an affirmation of individual rights. But the damage in this ruling is that it takes a significant public policy issue out of the hands of citizens. The people of Washington no longer have the authority to decide that, as a matter of public safety, they will prohibit handgun possession within their borders,” the editorial says.
Liberals often get irritable when conservatives react to Supreme Court decisions they don’t like with a call to amend the constitution. Now the shoe is on the other foot. Will it pinch?

Eddie Roth writes about education, social justice, public safety, transportation, legal affairs and historic preservation. He joined the Post-Dispatch editorial page in 2008 after six years as an editorial writer with the Dayton Daily News. But he is not new to St. Louis. Eddie grew up in Webster Groves and south St. Louis County. He's a lawyer who for many years practiced with a downtown firm, and was active in civic affairs, including serving a term on the St. Louis Police Board. He and his wife, Jeanne, and their three daughters, Emily, Julia and Alice, live in the Shaw Neighborhood.
When it comes to community organizing, he endorses Quentin Crisp's advice: Rather than keeping up with the Joneses, it's better to pull them down to your level.
The anti-gunners should take their best shot at repeal. Just as anyone who thinks the first amendment “takes a significant public policy issue out of the hands of citizens” should try to repeal it and forbid free speech. Or if a locality decides to allow home searches without warrants or issue punishment without judicial review they should first repeal the applicable constitutional guarantees. Pending those repeals, the citizens of Washington DC or any state or municipality should continue to enjoy the protection of the U.S. Constitution regardless of supposed local sentiment otherwise.
Why is it anyway that lefties always want to take away our freedoms? They want to take away our guns, free speech, the right of unborn babies to life, and now a recent letter writer to the PD says its time to take away a couples’ right to have the number of children they. Get ready, the socialists are coming people.
Courtesy of the Chicago Tribune, here’s today’s convoluted logic example:
“…The people of Washington no longer have the authority to decide that, as a matter of public safety, they will prohibit handgun possession within their borders,…”
Of course the opposite is true. Now every citizen of Washington D.C. has the power to decide for him or herself whether they want to own a handgun or not. Before last week, that right was expressly forbidden.
Ironic that a call to repeal the 2nd Amendment comes out of Chicago. Following last weeks ruling in District of Columbia vs Heller, Chicago now has the dubious distinction as the city with the most restrictive (and useless) gun laws.
My reaction to the proposed repeal of the 2nd Amendment is the same as the calls for passage of other amendments, let’s deal with more important issues…like passing an amendment to ban foregn teams from winning the World Series!

Tim,
I am with you on this. Teams from the Republic of Texas should be disqualified from World Series play. Not that it has come up much.
Carol-
Keep your guns if you want. We are still coming for you to take away your money and give it to hoboes, make your children gay, make you drink fluroidated water, and force you to speak Spanish and eat nachos. Guns will not protect you. Bwaaahaaaaaahaaaaa.
Go Toronto Blue Jays!!!

Thats funny.
Its also funny that democrat politicians know better than the trib that nothing will doom the party quicker than a pro-gun control platform, why else would the most liberal senator appear to be in favor of the decision?
Eddie,
Unfortunately for the Trib, any attempt to repeal the Second Amendment will go down in flames. Reason: Gallup announced that 73% of Americans believe the Second Amendment guarantees the rights of individual Americans to own guns. Americans also oppose any law banning handguns (except those used by police) by a margin of 68%-38%.

You liberal anti-gunners need to realize one thing, guns are what secured your right to make stupid statements like the ones in the above article!!!!!
“The people of Washington no longer have the authority to decide that, as a matter of public safety, they will prohibit handgun possession within their borders,” the editorial says.”
If the people of Washington are responsible enough to decide matters of public policy and safety, then they would certainly be responsible enough to decide matters of personal preference and safety; such as legally keeping a handgun in the home? Do the anti-gunners like the Tribune and Post really not see how silly they look?
