SC column: BBB warns consumers to stay away from lingerie retailer

If you missed my Saturday column, it’s about an online lingerie retailer that is having a tough time filling its orders. Here’s the lede:

Consumers shopping for a bawdy Halloween costume - or leather and latex lingerie for more everyday wear - ought to think twice before ordering from a Creve Coeur-based online retailer with a reputation for undelivered unmentionables.

The St. Louis Better Business Bureau this week warned that Cup Cake Intimates is racking up consumer complaints that sound awfully familiar to the watchdog group.

Faithful readers of this blog might remember a similar warning from the BBB about St. Louis area companies called Bad Girl Intimates and Doxy Lingerie. Both were owned by Jennifer Lutke Reynolds, and so is Cup Cake.

In 2006, after Missouri’s then-Attorney General Jay Nixon sued Doxy, a judge ordered restitution and barred the firm or Reynolds from processing payments until goods are shipped.

In Saturday’s column, Reynolds acknowledged that consumers’ orders have been delayed and she blames the sexy-Halloween-costume rush. She also defended her practice of canceling many consumers’ orders (and not charging them) instead of delivering the goods:

“During this hectic time of year, we are canceling any orders that we cannot get to customers in time for Halloween,” Reynolds explained. “While this may upset some of our customers, we feel that it would be best to cancel their order, rather than ship it and then they receive it after their event. This is giving them enough time to find an alternate costume.”

at least she remembers the court order and keeps it in mind from business to business. Not totally greedy like the home repair contractors the make the P-D.

Ms. Lutke-Reynolds used that same, lame excuse 3 years ago for delayed shipments. Before coming to Missouri, she ran this same type of business in another state with the same reputation for less than stellar service. New name, same old scam.
