Missouri defensive end Michael Keck has left the team for personal reasons, team spokesman Chad Moller confirmed Wednesday.

A 6-foot-5, 225-pound redshirt freshman from Harrisonville, Keck didn’t become the star player many expected of the state’s No. 1 overall prospect and a Parade All-American in the 2007 recruiting class.

After redshirting last season and working his way up to No. 2 on the depth chart in spring practices, Keck played briefly in the Tigers’ 52-42 win over Illinois on Saturday, registering one assisted tackle.

It was unclear if Keck’s absence from the team would be permanent.

The Chase Daniel for Heisman campaign takes another step this week as the school’s sports information office begins sending out 2,500 View-Masters to voters and other media members, the New York Times reported.

The View-Master is the old device that lets people see a 3-dimensional image. Each one that is mailed out will contain a 3-D picture of Chase.

The cost is $25,000, Missouri director of athletic media relations Chad Moller told the Times, about half of the school’s budget for Daniel’s Heisman campaign.

“It’s kind of a nostalgic toy for those of us who grew up looking at those things,” Moller told the paper. “We think it’s a unique enough item that people will keep it. They might put it on a shelf or something.”

In July, when the school was deciding how to approach Daniel’s bid for the Heisman, Moller told the Post-Dispatch: “We want to draw attention to Chase but we don’t want to do anything that could be viewed as over the top.”

Of course, the best way to win the Heisman is on the field and Daniel got a good start in the team’s 52-42 win over Illinois on national television. He passed for 323 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 46.

Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel termed receiver-kick returner Jeremy Maclin as probable for Saturday’s game with Southeast Missouri State as one of the team’s star offensive performers had to leave the Illinois game early with an ankle injury.

Maclin, who looked fine walking though the lobby of the athletic training building, said he expected to play and wanted to play. “I’ll be OK,” he said. “I want to play. I’m a competitor. I want to be out there with my teammates. Nobody wants to sit out. At the rate I’m at right now, I think I will be ready to play. I think I’ll play Saturday.”

Maclin said his ankle was “a lot better” than it was Saturday night.

Free safety William Moore sprained his foot and won’t practice Tuesday but was expected to play Saturday. He was in a walking cast, which Pinkel said was a routine treatment.

xxxxx

Linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, who had two interceptions on Saturday, including one for a touchdown, was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week.

The Associated Press football rankings won’t be out until Tuesday this week. It’s a combination of the Labor Day weekend and the Tennessee-UCLA game tonight.

The Tigers are a good bet to stay at No. 6. The five teams above them won by an average score of 51-8. The closest game (at least on the scoreboard) was No. 1 Georgia’s 45-21 win over Georgia Southern.

Texas could move up a notch from No. 11 because of No. 9 Clemson’s loss. If so, the Big 12 would have three teams in the top 10: Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.

In his teleconference earlier today, coach Gary Pinkel had the following injury updates:

– The MRI on Jeremy Maclin’s ankle showed no serious damage. Asked if he would keep Maclin out of Saturday’s game with Southeast Missouri State, Pinkel said, “The training staff will make that decision as the week goes on. If he’s healthy, he’ll play. He wants to play. We’ll do what’s right and what’s smart. We’ll decide mid-week to the end of the week.”

– Senior safety William Moore is listed as probable. He suffered a sprained foot against Illinois.

– Senior linebacker Steve Redmond suffered a torn ACL and MCL and is out for the season. Redmond was a fifth-year player from Rockhurst HS in Kansas City.
