MU plays Nebraska in Big 12 Tourney

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The Missouri basketball team will play Nebraska in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Nebraska’s 68-49 win over Colorado on Sunday and Texas’ 62-57 win over Oklahoma State locked the ‘Huskers into the seventh seed in the Big 12 Tournament and relegated Missouri to 10th.

This is actually a good matchup for the Tigers, who are holding onto slim postseason tournament hopes after finishing the conference 6-10, and need a run through the tournament to become a strong NIT candidate. Nebraska and Missouri split the season series with each winning on the road. However, Nebraska’s win on Jan. 30 came after Missouri coach Mike Anderson suspended five players and the Tigers were forced to play with six scholarships.

In the second meeting, Missouri needed overtime to win their second true road game of the season. Guard Keon Lawrence led the Tigers with 19 points and forward Leo Lyons scored six of Mizzou’s 15 overtime points.

Nebraska forward Aleks Maric dominated both meetings, averaging 22.5 points and 14.5 rebounds.

The winner of the game has the unfortunate privilege of playing Kansas on Friday at 6 p.m. Missouri was competitive with the Jayhawks in the first meeting this season, but then was blasted 90-71 in Lawrence, Kan. Nebraska lost by 21 and 24 in its two games against Kansas.

Missouri has not won in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament since the 2004-05 season. The Tigers have faced Nebraska two of the last three rounds. Their only win was in 2005 - a 70-67 decision in Kansas City.
