Spring Football: Wuebbels at practice, Crane switches positions *UPDATED*
***Update***
Missouri offensive lineman Austin Wuebbels has been suspended indefinitely from the team after he was charged with four misdemeanors. He will miss Thursday’s practice and Saturday’s spring game.
***Earlier post***
Offensive lineman Austin Wuebbels, who was arrested Sunday morning for suspicion of possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of alcohol by a minor and false identification, was allowed to practice on Tuesday.
Well, kinda.
Wuebbels practiced because the coaching staff didn’t know about his arrest or the four misdemeanors with which he was charged. When coach Gary Pinkel was asked whether Wuebbels would face any further disciplinary action, he looked perplexed. He then told the media that these things are handled internally.
I think the annoyance was less about the question and more about the fact that the media was informing him about the late night goings on of his players. Honestly, he would have found out when he got back to his office anyway. The offense had been on the Columbia Daily Tribune blog since around noon.
So Wuebbels might have practiced Tuesday, but it’s a safe bet that will be his last practice of the spring season.
For all the others who haven’t heard, here’s what happened…
According to Lt. Dianne Bernhard, at 2:56 Sunday morning, Wuebbels was stopped by two officers for speeding near the corner of Southampton Drive and Executive Drive in Columbia. While one officer was writing a speeding warning, the other noticed Wuebbels reaching for something underneath his dashboard.
Officers removed Wuebbels from the car, searched the vehicle, and found marijuana and a metal marijuana smoking pipe, Bernhard said. They also found a fake ID, beer and determined Wuebbels smelled of alcohol. He was taken to the police station where he passed a sobriety test.
He was cited and released on his signature. Wuebbels will have to appear in court for the four misdemeanor charges.
Wuebbels, 19, continued to work as the second string right guard behind Kurtis Gregory on Tuesday.
Here’s the “duh” part of this whole thing in case you missed it up top, Wuebbels was being given a warning for speeding before he panicked and reached under his dash. He doesn’t reach, this is a non-story. He doesn’t even get a speeding ticket. Now, since the coaches didn’t know and this is about three days after the fact, there might be harsher repercussions. And in all honesty, this offensive line can ill afford to lose a second-string guy. There’s not a third stringer that has shown enough to be a competent backup. Dan Hoch, anyone?
One other early note from practice…
** Defensive end Tyler Crane was working with the linebackers during Tuesday’s practice despite coach Pinkel stating several times that there would not be any changes made to the linebacking corps this spring.
Pinkel said Crane came to the coaching staff to ask for the move and, like they almost always do, the coaching staff obliged. Crane actually came to Mizzou as a linebacker, but moved to defensive end. According to the Mizzou spring media guide, Crane played in 11 games and recorded two tackles.
“Obviously it’s going to be difficult right now, but I believe in time it’s a good move,” Pinkel said. “He can run well, he has not gained the weight that some of those other guys have gained. And so really, it originated from him and what we did is we just talked about it as a staff and thought it would be a good move. He’s got a lot to learn yet.”
Pinkel said he wasn’t sure where Crane would be used during the spring game, but he’d probably play defensive end before making the switch this summer.
The linebacking corps have been depleted after Marquis Booker was released from the team, Connell Davis voluntarily left the team and starters Van Alexander and Sean Weatherspoon have been hampered with injuries.
** Speaking of Alexander… He had surgery Monday to repair a torn ACL he suffered last week and was not at Tuesday’s practice.
** Safety Gilbert Moye was back at practice, though he didn’t appear to be fully healed from the hamstring injury he suffered in the team’s first scrimmage two Saturday’s ago.
The team will hold its final practice of the spring on Thursday. Spring game is Saturday at 1 p.m.
I guess I’m throwing rocks while living in a glass house, but then I didn’t play a major sport while at Mizzou. Does anyone sit the players down and read them the “riot act” about following the straight and narrow? I broke plenty of “laws” while in school, but didn’t get caught because I did my partying with other students at parties or apartments etc.; not driving around town and not carrying a gun.
