More changes on the offensive line
The reconstruction of the Missouri offensive line continued Wednesday morning as Kurtis Gregory moved back to right guard and redshirt freshman Elvis Fisher took over on the first team at left tackle.
Ryan Madison remains at left guard, Tim Barnes at center and Colin Brown at right tackle. But the coaching staff is trying to settle on a front five and Fisher has impressed enough to earn the job of protecting Chase Daniel’s blind side. That’s heady stuff for a guy who hasn’t played a down of college football.
“We’re really pleased overall with the line, but Elvis has really come along and that’s why we made that move,” coach Gary Pinkel said.
Additionally, Dain Wise, who had been No. 1 at right guard, has moved back to tackle where he will compete for playing time along with freshman Dan Hoch, who has made an impression. He is now No. 2 on the depth chart.
PinkelĀ didn’t discount the possibility of doing the unusual and playing a freshman on the offensive line. Hoch is 6 feet 7 inches and 295 pounds.
“He’ll determine that,” Pinkel said. “He’s got good skill. He’s very mature and has good physical skills as a freshman and good numbers in terms of strength and size. You still have to be mature enough to play.”
Gregory has bounced back and forth between tackle and guard over the years and seemed content with the move.
“It doesn’t matter,” he said. “The best five guys get to play so we have to know every position on the line. It’s where I played last year and this spring and Elvis has been doing great.”
