MU’s history vs. No. 1s
Reid Laymance
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

It really doesn’t affect this year’s team or this week’s matchup vs. No. 1 Texas but a bit of history on both sides:

– Missouri is 0-10 against No. 1-ranked teams. The last time they played a No. 1 was 2003 when Gary Pinkel’s squad lost to Oklahoma, 34-13. Larry Smith was 0-3; Woody Widenhofer was 0-2; Warren Powers was 0-3 and Al Onofrio 0-1.

– Texas hasn’t been No. 1 in the regular season since 1984. That lasted just two weeks until a 15-15 tie with Oklahoma. Before that, it was 1981 when the Longhorns moved to No. 1 after a win over OU only to lose 42-11 at Arkansas (and coach Lou Holtz) the next week.

– Texas is 10-0 the week after the Oklahoma game under Mack Brown.

– Missouri is 21-12 the week after a loss under Gary Pinkel.
