Nightmare BCS scenario for Missouri
OK, we admit this doesn’t have much chance of happening, but it’s another bit of evidence for tweaking or trashing the BCS system for picking bowls.
The latest chatter from BCS- and bowl-types has discovered a way that Missouri could win the Big 12 title game and get left out of a BCS bowl.
Here’s how:
First, start with the rule that only two teams from a conference can play in BCS bowls and the over-riding rule that 1 vs. 2 in BCS standings is all that matters for deciding the teams for the national title game.
Then, follow these dominoes.
1. Oklahoma beats Texas Tech in a close, dramatic game, well-played by both teams. Sooners and Raiders then finish the seasons with wins and have 11-1 records.
2. Texas manages to stay ahead of OU in the BCS standings with a convincing win over Texas A&M on national TV on Thanksgiving night. Using the Big 12 tiebreaker, Texas gets spot in conference title game against Missouri.
3. Missouri beats Texas in Big 12 title game. Both teams would have two losses.
4. This is the tricky part. Alabama is upset by Auburn. Florida is upset by Florida State. Florida beats Alabama in SEC title game. Both teams would have two losses.
5. That would probably leave Oklahoma and Tech as 1-2 in the BCS standings and the national title game although you may need another loss by Southern Cal or Penn State.
6. That leaves Missouri out and heading to the Holiday Bowl because the Cotton Bowl would still take Texas ahead of Missouri to finish out its history in the original stadium with its traditional team.
Ouch.
But it’s just a scenario.
I prefer a different ending. USC loses to ND and Penn St. loses to Mich. St. OU beats TT, Tex looks lame against A&M. Mizzou wins BIG !@ Championship game, Alabama beats Florida in SEC Championship and Mizzou beats Alabama for NC.
