David Yost named offensive coordinator at Missouri
David Yost, who has been the quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator for eight years under Gary Pinkel, is moving up to the role of offensive coordinator.
The school announced the move today as Yost replaces Dave Christensen, who is leaving to become head coach at Wyoming.
“I’m excited about having David take over the offense,” Pinkel said in a statement. “He’s already had a huge role these past few years, much larger than people probably realize, in terms of game-planning and calling plays.”
Yost has been with Pinkel for 13 years, going back to Toledo where he started as a graduate assistant in 1996 before becoming quarterbacks coach there and moving to Missouri with Pinkel.
“It’s been fun to be a part of all we’ve achieved the past few years,” Yost said.
Missouri’s offense ranks sixth in total offense (497.5) and scoring (43.2) this year.
Christensen is staying with the school through the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29 vs. Northwestern.
Sounds Great!!! Now can we stop playing the soft prevent defense throughout the entire game?
Sincerely hope he is an advocate of getting back to more traditional power running game instead of spread all the time. That would help the defense some right there.
No changes at Mizzou, Pinkel is very loyal but it will eventually will get him ran out of Columbia. If he couldn’t get us to a BCS bowl with this team than he is done for. Next year, .500, after that below and then gone. See ya Gary, your stubborness to change is going to cost you, just like this year. The rest of the Big 12 has figured out how to stop your offense and your staff made no adjustments, just like your “easy” decision to go with Yost. Good luck and good bye.
Gary will get run out of town if we don’t make a BCS bowl next year?? Really???? What world do you live in?
In the 8 years since Gary Pinkel arrived -
1 12 win season
1 10+ win season (2 if the tigers take care of business against NWern)
4 8+ win seasons
3 wins agains Nebraska
3 seasons UNDER .500
58 total wins
2 Big 12 North Division titles
5 Bowl games
2 Years with a Heisman finalist
In the 16 years prior to Gary Pinkel -
*0* 10 win seasons.
*0* wins against Nebraska
1 8-win season
2 seasons ABOVE .500
60 total wins
2 Bowl games
*0* Division or Conference titles
*0* Years with a Heisman Finalists
So yes, that means in 8 years GP and Co. are 2 wins short (1 if they beat NWern) of the total achieved in the 16 prior years.
Otherwise, in every possible meaningful way GP is the best head coach Missouri has had in modern times. Would I like to see us in a BSC bowl? Yes. Would I like to see us win the Big 12, not just the north? Yes. Is this considerably better than praying each year for a bowl game and a “lucky” win against a ranked opponent? Oh hell yes!
Dynasties aren’t created overnight. Should we be hungry for more? Yes. Should we expect the defense to improve massively. Yes. Should we lose our minds and start calling for GP’s head? No. Please take a little bit of a historical context before making a silly statement like this.
I hope Yost is the right choice and is a more capable game day coach than Christiansen.
However, I don’t think the offense was the problem this year … or the last few. The defense is where the Tigers need to improve and I think it starts with the Defensive Coordinator. Eberflus if obviously not up to the task. Our defense gets pushed around by EVERYONE!
Dear Coach Pinkel,
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!
