Missouri bowl outlook: Fiesta or Alamo

The Big 12 bowls are falling into line although nothing can be official until Sunday evening.

Here’s where it stands for Missouri: Beat Oklahoma and its the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 5. Lose and it is looking more and more like a trip to San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29, according to conversations with officials at each of the bowls affiliated with the Big 12.

Here’s how it ends up that way with the Big 12 teams and the league’s bowl affiliations.

Oklahoma (assuming it beats Missouri) and Texas will get spots in the BCS bowls.

Then the rest of the selection order goes like this:

Cotton: Texas Tech

Holiday: It looks like Oklahoma State will get the nod over Missouri, thanks in part to the head-to-head win over the Tigers earlier this year. A slight chance this could change but it looks like the San Diego bowl would take a 9-3 OSU team over a 9-4 Missouri team.

Gator: The Jacksonville game takes a Big 12 team and goes with Nebraska.

Alamo: It’s Missouri vs. a Big Ten team.

Sun: Out of the Big 12 rotation now that the Gator has taken Nebraska.

Insight: Kansas.

Why would the Gator Bowl take Nebraska over Mizzou? Is it simply b/c they travel better? Wouldn’t the Gator Bowl be better for Mizzou than playing Northwestern in the Alamo?

Mizzou needs to establish a record of bringing large numbers to bowl games. The Cotton Bowl was a good start. Alamo will probably be a better bowl for recruiting since we draw so well from Texas high schools. The more visible we are in Texas, the better. Of course it would help to beat Texas once in awhile.

Let’s go out and win on Saturday, and let the Fiesta begin.

The gator is taking nebraska because they are a better draw and have a long tradition, not a one hit wonder like missouri

Confused, it has been pretty widely reported that the Gator Bowl would take NU over Mizzou or Okie State because of the crazy fans NU has…they travel in numbers that would make MU or OSU drool. There is also a pretty good chance that Florida State will end up in the Gator Bowl, and the people in Jacksonville are excited about a rematch of some really big games between the two programs.

The Alamo Bowl would be fine. It’s the lame Northwestern matchup that sucks. That’s the best Big 10 team they could come up with?

Northwestern isn’t all that bad, after all, they could have scheduled a rematch with southeast missouri state! oh, that’s right, they aren’t eligble.

I say beat Oklahoma and go to the Fiesta. Since that’s really unlikely, go to the Alamo and beat the crap out of Northwestern. Half a loaf is better than none.

Once again MU will get paired with an inferior opponent, and we will never know how we would have performed against a big time team outside the Big 12. Oh what could have been! I’m betting that every Big 12 team wins their bowl game, except Nebraska.

Why are we acting like we’ll just roll over Northwestern. They’re a heckuva lot better than KU, and we know how that turned out when we went in thinking it would be great to crush them for the 2nd time in 2 years. Any bowl game could go either way - we’d be favored but whoop-t-do.

Northwestern is actually a good team, but the point is moot since they’ll likely be in the Outback Bowl anyway.

I say we quit with this attitude worrying about the Gator/Alamo pecking order. Why not go into attitude that we can beat Oklahoma and get a BCS Bowl bid (Fiesta or Sugar)? You can’t beat a team if you don’t believe you can. Whether it’s realistic or not, we need to go into this game with the proper attitude.

What i’m hearing here in San Antonio is if OU beats MU bad enough the Alamo Bowl may possibly take Kansas due to the fan base KU has in Texas. Bowl officals already know how well KU travels due to the Final 4 last season and based on how well KU traveled to the Orange Bowl. KU had a tougher schedule this season and has the head to head vs MU. Remember how KU jumped you last season when you lost to OU. Same could happen again.

Rumors around KC are that Lewd Perkins is hard at work promoting KU for the Alamo Bowl, just like he did last year for the BCS Orange Bowl. That guy is a pure snake oil salesman. Mike Alden would be well advised to become a little more aggressive in promoting the Tigers, even though the league discourages it.

Since I live in San Antonio (along with a lot of other MIZZOU alumni) I’m glad the Tigers are coming here… And, as someone pointed out, it probably won’t hurt our recruiting in Texas…

FORGET WHICH BOWL!!!
Let’s screw the BCS and fight for what we lost last year. Beat OU and the BSC really will not have fun picking who goes and who doesn’t.

Northwestern and Missouri have a common opponent. We beat Illinois 27-10. Did Missouri beat them by more? Uh, No.
