Sheldon Richardson says mom wants him to be close to home
A little more insight on the recruiting of Gateway Tech’s Sheldon Richardson comes from ESPN The Magazine’s Bruce Feldman and his blog.
Feldman says that Miami’s hiring of Mark Whipple as offensive coordinator will help the ‘Canes as they recruit Richardson and try to hold on to a commitment from running back Bryce Brown from Wichita.
Feldman also relates this quote from Richardson, which could be most telling:
“Well, my father is just leaving the decision up to me, and my mother wants me to stay close to home,” Richardson told InsidetheU.com. “My brother said it depends on what position I want to play. If I want to play tight end I could play tight end in Miami because Miami would be a better fit. I just don’t know yet what position I want to play, so that’s what else makes the decision so hard, because my body weight fluctuates up and down.”
Richardson, 6-4, 280, plays both defensive line and tight end. He committed to Missouri in June and re-affirmed that commitment in December but is still being wooed by the Hurricanes.
Richardson is scheduled to go to Miami on Friday. Signing day is Wednesday.
IMO he should honor his commitment to Mizzou like he has said before and ignore the Canes. The Canes should be in violation of some kind of code because he has already committed to Mizzou. He would be the next Chase Coffman or Ziggy Hood at Mizzou. GO TIGERS!!!!!
“He committed to Missouri in June and re-affirmed that commitment in December but…” Commitment? Re-affirmed? Yep. The St. Louis public school system fails again in not being able to get students to learn the meaning of words.
stlsportsfan44,
Sooooo, by that logic Mizzou would have been in violation of that same “code” last year with Gabbert. It happens every year. Kids verbally commit to schools, then have a change of heart. That’s the way it is.
Miami in violation for recruiting this player? Please give me a break. It is what it is homeboy! Take your visit to Miami. Enjoy the sunshine, and great weather. Check out the “hot chicks” on the beach. Meet the coaches, and fellow recruits. Then sign with Miami next Wednesday. Tell your mama you love her, shake your dads hand, tell your brother you will holla, and come to Miami play 3 yrs and then go get your money in the NFL. This is a no-brainer….C-A-N-E-S CANES!!!!
I’m with Ralph its amazing how quick you forget when it happens the other way. We didn’t mouth Gabbert or Hoch when they changed their commitment. Many kids break their oral commitments year after year. They are that just kids so lets not pile on when a situation changes or dare I say it a better opportunity comes along. He is a local product and lets wish him the best no matter what decision he makes.
Come to Mizzou, Sheldon! Miami sucks–they’re 12-13 in the last two years! Mizzou is 22-6 in a better conference!
mizzou is a perfect place for a momma’s boy, no need to visit Miami - football players headed for the NFL chose schools that will make them better - soft players that miss their mommie go to places like columbia
Young Mr. Richardson….my grandfather taught me many moons ago that all a man has throughout his life is his good name. You have given your name to the University Of Missouri that you would attend there and play footabll. You reaffirmed that commitment of your good name in December. Be the fine young man that your family has raised you to be and keep your families name respectable attend Missouri….if you are any good at all…the pros will find you even if you are play in someones back yard!!!
Sheldon, momma knows best. Don’t break her heart. You have a home at Ol’Mizzou!
He “re-affirmed his commitment in December”. That helps throw the Mizzou recruiters off guard. Not to mention other players who may or may not have been persuaded or dissuaded to consider Missouri based on another player’s choice of school. No, it’s never right to lead someone to believe one thing, and then pull a switch on them. Most comments have to do with Sheldon’s immaturity, e.g., “he’s just a kid”, but mature young people do realize what “commitment” and “re-affirmed” mean. Eighteen is the legal age for entering into contracts, verbal or written. I hope Sheldon’s character reflects his age and he honors his re-affirmed commitment.
