Gary Pinkel promotes Dave Steckel to defensive coordinator
Gary Pinkel officially named Dave Steckel as defensive coordinator today to replace Matt Eberflus, who took a job in February with the Cleveland Browns.
Steckel has been on Pinkel’s staff for eight seasons at Missouri as linebacker coach. He will still oversee the linebackers.
Pinkel also promoted Barry Odom to an assistant coach in charge of safeties. He had served as director of football operatiosn the past three years.
“I have always been a firm believer in promoting from within if you have the right people on board, and I feel very confident that we have the right people to step in and help advance our program,” said Pinkel.
Said Steckel: “We’ve got a really talented group of kids who are busting their tails every day to improve and I’m excited about the possibilities for the future. I’m looking forward taking the things that Coach Eberflus built and adding my twists to the mix to help us move forward.”
Great idea. Steckel learned from the best! Expect the same old same old next season. BTW…for someone to be a linebacker’s coach for eight freaking years on the same team - they have to be some kinda retard. One of Stinkel’s problems - among a bazillion - is that the man cannot go outside of his little fiefdom to find someone who could actually upgrade the coaching talent on that team. Barry Odom is an assistant coach in charge of safeties?!?! Next thing you know they’ll have an assistant coach assigned to butt wiping.

Personally I would have liked to see Pinkel get a D-Co-ordinator from the SEC. I don’t understand why you would promote from within when the defense was so sub par. In my mind we need a whole new defensive strategy. This just sounds like business as usual which wont get us a national championship…
Agree, Mr Know it all doesn’t know anything. Pinkel knows what he is doing. Mizzou will be good next year, despite what the nay-sayers think.
Sorry Shadow but mr_know_it-all and bigdawg are right. We can expect more of the same mediocrity from the MU defence. I was really hoping they were going to bring in some a new guy from a league that plays defence. No defence in the Big12 is on pace with the elite D’s in the Pac10 Big10 or SEC. Texas and Oklahoma have been getting wins on shear talent. There is no pass rush from the MU D lineman and the secondary tackles like my sister. Both of those things have to change if MU wants to compete with the big boys. MU doesnt have the talent, or depth of talent, to win on talent alone. They need to be fundamentally sound and execute their gameplan and we havent been getting that over the last 2 years. Considering the pieces we lost on offence, I cant imagaine they’re going to put up 40 points a game again this year … it might be a really long season. Like a 5 and 7 kind of season.
