Georgia a contender for Mike Anderson

ESPN.com’s Mark Schlabach is reporting that Georgia has offered its head basketball job to Mike Anderson.

The report said that Anderson spoke with Georgia athletic director Damon Evans on Monday and was offered a contract worth over $2 million per season. Anderson made $850,000 this season at Missouri. He has been in negotations for a new deal at MU and the school’s Board of Curators has a meeting set for Thursday where it could approve a new contract.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that Georgia is narrowing its focus to Anderson and Jeff Capel of Oklahoma.

Meanwhile, Kentucky is moving closer to hiring Memphis coach John Calipari, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

That could also put Memphis in the running for Anderson, who once recruited the area for Arkansas and coached in Conference-USA at UAB.

Bryan Burwell of the Post-Dispatch reported that Memphis has not yet asked permission to speak to Anderson.

Mike Anderson needs to break Georgia’s heart just like Clarence Gilbert did in the tournament. Come on, Mike. Georgia? Seriously? That’s a total football school. I think you’re romanticizing the South a bit. You belong at Mizzou. Think of it as Arkansas-North. –denny, http://www.tracychapstick.com

I feel like I’m about to puke after reading this article. While I completely despise the college coaching carousel that goes on every year and the total lack of loyalty it breeds, it is reality and if the market says Anderson is worth $2MM+, then MU and its boosters have to buck up to keep him. I refuse to believe MU and its alumni should settle for being a second-class stepping stone school who develops coaches to go to other schools for more money.

Missouri needs to make him an offer today and not wait until Thursday. Please stay at Mizzou Mr. Anderson.

Mizzou needs to pull the trigger and keep Anderson, as they did with Pinkel. He’s more than earned it on and off the court, and even in this tough financial times, the cost of keeping him will make up for it in school revenue as the program keeps progressing upwards, and makes more tourney appearances. Good coaches are few and far between, so it would be a huge mistake if they let him go.

It is a complete joke if Mizzou loses him to Georgia or Memphis. Pinkel got his money. It’s time to pay Mike. He deserves it. Go Mizzou!!!

I think the georgia offer is ridiculous. Thats more money than Izzo and Calhoun make, and they have final fours and rings. If Mizzou can come up with the money, they should. I think most Mizzou fans would be fine paying him whatever he wants. I hope he stays loyal to our program, and decides to stay for maybe a little less cash. That seems like the Mike Anderson that I have gotten to know the last few years. If he leaves simply for more money, then I guess he’s not the guy we all thought he was, and should be done with him.

It hasn’t been mentioned yet, so let’s get this statement out there:

“It’s ridiculous that college coaches make (millions) of dollars.” There. Get over it. If the laws of economics allow for a college coach to make millions, then so be it. I’d rather see a college coach make that kind of money than a wall street banker at this point!

Here’s the reality. Big time college sports (and MU/Big 12 IS Big Time) = Big $$. Is Mike Anderson a Big Time coach? Yes.

As an alumnus, I’m happy to say that Mizzou stepped up and paid Gary Pinkel what he is worth. Let’s commit to being Big Time and do the same with Mike Anderson. There is not a classier coach right now with more integrity than Coach Anderson.

Mike Alden and company–are you listening?

If he was offered a job at a great BBall school, I would understand his reason to leave more. But to leave all the players he’s recruited and made promises to, just to make more money? thats low. I hope Mike isn’t that guy.

Since when does an equally recession-plagued state school in Georgia justify dropping $2MM/year on a coach that hasn’t been to a final 4 or won a title? Not to take anything away from CMA, but when did UGA become the Yankees? 2MM a year is at the very top of the pay scale for coaches. How does Georgia justify that to it’s taxpayers (who probably don’t even care that much about basketball)?
