Predicting tonight’s MU-Memphis regional semifinal

We’ll be hearing from our staff out in Glendale, Ariz., this morning as they get ready for tonight’s Missouri-Memphis game. As they check in, we’ll give you their predictions throughout the day. Feel free to add yours in the comment field.

Post-Dispatch columnist Bryan Burwell:

Missouri 81-78: I’m going to go against my bracket sheet and follow my instincts instead. Missouri has been playing at a higher level since that Oklahoma game near the end of the regular season, and I think their depth and defensive pressure will turn out to be the difference in this exciting, up-tempo game.

Post-Dispatch columnist Bernie Miklasz:

Memphis 83 Missouri 76: I may be guilty of underestimating Mizzou, which has played more NCAA Tournament teams this season than Memphis has. But Memphis has the supply of athletes and confidence a team needs to outdo Mizzou.

Bernie has more thoughts on the game in his most recent post in “5 minutes of blogging.”

Vahe Gregorian chimes in:
Memphis 80, Mizzou 74: Mizzou can’t slow down Memphis enough to keep comeback season alive.

This is definitely a game of “ifs”….

IF Missouri wins the turnover battle by 8+ AND
IF Carroll plays at least 30 minutes AND
IF Missouri shoots well from the free-throw line AND
IF Memphis does not outrebound Missouri by 10+ rebounds –> Missouri 84, Memphis 80

Otherwise –> Memphis 93, Missouri 76

One thing I think is an overrated statistic is field goal percentage. You can shoot terribly from the field, but if your turnovers are down and offensive rebounds are up, it doesn’t matter.

Let’s enjoy the fact that we are in the Sweet Sixteen! The so called experts had picked the Tigers near the botom of the Big12 nd they won the trophy. Now , they say they have no chance tonight. Well, that’s why you play the game and let people pick against hem. Tigers will win!

Mizzou 84 Memphis 83

Agree it is a game of “if’s”.

The biggest being which Memphis team shows up. If it is the team that didn’t show up until around 5 minutes to go Saturday,we have problems but if it is the team that was on the floor most of that game,I think we can do it.

I’m hopeful and I’ll be watching…

Oh,yeah….gotta ad “GO BLUES!!!” also

Mizzou is going to win tonight. A typical chaotic game. Mizzou starts out very very slow and is down by 10 at half. Memphis has a hot hand despite the full court pressure and memphis scores 35 to mizzou’s 25. The tides change in the 2nd (as it so often does with mizzou) as lyons hits the 12 footers, lawrence sinks a few from beyond the arc, and dozier gets into foul trouble. Final score is: Mizzou 74 - 69 Memphis.

Only 2 hours to columbia…see you saturday.

In a city where very odd things have happened this year (like sending the Cardinals to the Super Bowl) Mizzou will win, as will Purdue knocking off the Huskies.

Don’t think the Mizzou will win, but if they do……….what a wild ride.
