Surprise: It’s Texas Tech vs. MU in quarterfinals
So much for that rematch with Texas A&M and a chance to avenge Saturday’s loss in College Station.
Instead, Missouri will face Texas Tech tonight in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament. It’s the last game on the schedule today with an 8:30 p.m. start.
A few notes from Tech’s win over A&M and a look at the game earlier this season between the Tigers and Red Raiders:
– Mike Singletary’s 43 points is a Big 12 tournament record. The old mark was 38 by Marcus Fizer.
– The Red Raiders trailed by 21in the first half and didn’t lead until 38 seconds were left at 79-78.
– Texas Tech has now beaten Kansas and A&M in its last two games.
– Singletary’s 43 points all came off the bench. Tech coach Pat Knight laughed last night when asked if he would start Singletary tonight against Missouri. “That’s 43 bench points. That’s a good stat. I don’t want to ruin that.”
– Tech is the third No. 11 seed to win a game in Big 12 history.
– The Tigers beat Tech, 97-86, in Columbia on Jan. 24 in their only game with the Red Raiders this year.
– DeMarre Carroll had 27 points in 32 minutes for Missouri.
– Missouri led by as many as 18 in the first half and again early in the second before Tech cut the margin to seven with 6:43 left.
– Singletary by the way had 14 points in 26 minutes off the bench for the Red Raiders.
The AP account of the game said Singletary scored every one of Tech’s 29 points over a 9-minute stretch of the second half. He outscored A&M 29-18 by himself. Incredible. I don’t think I have ever heard of such a thing.
So, Mizzou will get one extra game in the tournament and then will be beaten in the first round of the NCAA. Same as usual.
