What next for Missouri after loss at Kansas

So, now that the 25-point loss at Kansas ends Missouri’s seven-game winning streak, what is left for the Tigers, who are now 24-5 overall and 11-3 in conference:

Seeding for the Big 12 tournament: The Tigers chances at No. 1 are done. Even if Kansas loses twice (at Texas Tech and home vs. Texas) while Missouri wins out (home vs. Oklahoma, at Texas A&M), the Jayhawks own the tiebreaker. And if it’s a three-way tie with Oklahoma, the first step is to break the tie between Missouri and Kansas because they are both from the North.  Because Missouri and Kansas split their regular season games, the next tiebreaker is record in the division and KU would have just one loss. Missouri has three (Kansas, Kansas State and Nebraska). The Tigers could earn the No. 2 seed with a win over Oklahoma and victory over A&M (if OU beats Oklahoma State in its finale).

What’s the difference between the 2 and 3 seed at the Big 12 tournament: Not much except later nights for the No. 3 seed, which plays the last game of the night (Thursday, March 12) and again on Friday. The three seed has the winner of the 6 vs. 11 game, while the two draws the winner of the 7 vs. 12. So many teams are bunched between 4 and 8 — Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Texas, Texas A&M and Nebraska are separated by two games — that it’s a bit early to figure all that out. Bottom line, at either 2 or 3, it looks like MU vs. OU in the semis in the late game Friday in Oklahoma City.

NCAA tournament seeding: Most bracketologists had the Tigers as a three seed but even if they slip to a four, it’s not that big of a deal for the first two rounds. It does make it harder in some ways to keep them close to home for the first two rounds so don’t book a trip to Kansas City just yet for that regional. Dropping to a five seed is a bit more problematic because of a potentially tougher second-round game.

At home vs. Oklahoma, Wednesday: Blake Griffin is back from his concussion so the Sooners will be a different team than the one that lost to Kansas and Texas.

At Texas A&M, Saturday: The Aggies are tough at home and are playing to break through the bubble. This will be almost as big a test as Oklahoma at home because winning on the road in the Big 12 isn’t easy.

So much for the article hyping Tiller. He was terrible today as was the rest of the team. Talk about being totally intimated. MU turned Aldrich into the second coming of Dwight Howard. MU owes KU some money for new backboards and rims that Aldrich broke today in his dunk fest!

Anderson is clueless versus teams not named Centenary and Stetson. He is overmatched against the upper echelon of the Nation. He has know idea of how to rebound or guard the middle of the lane.

I will say this for him though - he has recruited some of the best brick layers that I have seen. The players had to all earn Journeymen status today. So much for this year, Overrated is right!

Griffin is going to tear MU apart. You would have thought there was a cover over the rim today! No adjustments, it was like watching Pinkel at the half, just get out of the way of the band and that is it!

I say to Anderson this, goodbye, you will not be missed, go, run to Alabama or Georgia. You have not recruited an outside shooter or a quality big man yet, or even a point guard. Give SLU a couple of years and they will be the class of the state!

Anderson you showed the Show Me State what you are all about! Someone quick get Centenary on the schedule fast!

Ok so now its Mizzou and KU tied at 1-1 for the season. The game today was a great experience for the underclassman and will prepare them for the tourney. Leo Lyons had a great game.

Mizzou won on their home court and KU won on their home court. So its a tie. Go Tigers!!!

You have to be kidding me. We got killed today all around, but to throw Anderson under the bus for losing at Allen Fieldhouse is a joke. They have only won thier last 40 or so at home. Mizzou thrives when they make shots, and they didnt today. The refs didnt help us out at all, but it was an all around drubing by KU. Nobody thought we would be in this position this year, so everyone that thinks Anderson needs to go is just kidding themselves. THis is a well coached team that was outplayed and out talented today. Better luck in the big 12 tourney. We still split the season series, and have handed the chickenhawks their only conference loss of the year. NOt a bad season if you ask me. If I were a tourney team, I would not want to match up with Mizzou in the NCAA’s this year. Go tigers.

Out-talented was not the issue today. It does not take much talent to make layups and 3 foot shots or dunk shots. It was terrible defense and a lack of closing down the middle. If Mizzou plays a team that does not have a post presence, they have a shot if they shoot better, but come on, which good team doesn’t have a big man down low. Lyons and Carroll were abused all game by Aldrich who I consider a marginal talent. Anyone can hit the open shot, except for us!

The tigers are fine….Ku came out fired up to prove they are the team to beat in the Big 12. They are…as long as Blake Griffin is out. We will have our hands full on Wed, but come on, we have played fine all year. We did not hit a shot for the entire first half. It was Leo on 5. If we dont hit any shots, we will lose to anyone in the country. We have to make shots to set up our defense. It is simple. Poor shooting on the road = a loss. I would have loved to see the game close, but everyone knew this could happen. We will be just fine. I just hope to get another shot at the yardbirds in OKC.

I would say that this game was a little expected, not the blow out but a win there is difficult to do. I agree that it is a little pathetic that we miss so many layups. Shot selection was not working for us at all and that has been prevalent over the last couple of years. Having said that I find it funny to throw Anderson under the bus so fast. I have made fun of the non-conference schedule but this team has showed up in conference play. This team has at least made mizzou basketball a topic of conversation that doesn’t involved police blotters. In case you forgot KEVIN D Mizzou is undefeated at home and Griffin is coming off an injury so I wouldn’t just assume they are gonna get dominated on Wednesday night. SLU will never be the class of the state unless Larry Hughes could come back to college. The A10 compared to the Big 12 is a joke so that class of the state comment was dumb. Why say bye to Anderson? I guess we want a Quin Synder back to do coke with college kids and sleep with players girlfriends. Mike Anderson has done just fine this year with him finally being able to use his own players. “So much for this year?” From a non tournament team for 6 years to a probable top 5 seed in the tournament and 25+ wins, what more did you expect? A win on Wednesday night and you will probably be back on Anderson’s jock.

Have to agree with Kevin D. Anderson should be blamed for this loss this is his team isn’t it. This was his third trip to Lawrence Ks. so he knew what he was walking into. The big guys were like greeters at Wal-mart they just let anyone in.

I can tell you why SLU will be better C-O-A-C-H-I-N-G. Anytime Anderson goes up against Self or Bruce Weber he craps in his hat. So I ask you 40 minutes of hell or an actual system that beats good teams.

Hey Zach just so you know the weak A-10’s Xavier beat your dominant big 12 Mizzou.

Here is a memo to MU, quit shooting long range 3 pointers and take the ball to the basket. MU could not make layups, so what would Cole Aldrich, Tyler Hansborough, Luke Harangody for example do - dunk the basketball. This is not Europe or the 1950’s guys. Dunk the ball. Take the ball strong to the basket, draw fouls, convert free throws (a new concept for MU) and get the other teams big men in foul trouble.

KU was ready to play, plain and simple and Mizzou wasn’t. Mike Anderson is not the answer. He has taken advantage of soft non-conference scheduling (see Stetson and Centenary) and a weak Big 12 conference, but just like in football when MU meets the conference elite teams they get intimidated and overwhelmed and fall flat on their face.

Why would a fellow blogger want Quin back or a coach like Quin. We have to raise the standards fellows. Mizzou could get Lon Kruger for example who can coach and recruit.

I do think that SLU will be ahead of MU as a program in three years. Majerus is building the program the right way, with a dominant center and a playmaking point guard, who can score, shoot, and penetrate the lane opening things up. MU does not have a point guard or a center. MU’s big men are soft and I doubt Carroll could jump over a rope if it were on the ground.

Bill Self is the best and Mike Anderson is his doormat!

Kevin D,

You truly are stupid. I was there when Quin was coaching, and all he ever did was take the number 2 team in the county and miss the postseason. That has never been done. That was awesome. Anderson has brought in players that fit his gameplan, and when they lose, it can be ugly. The great thing is, KU fans wanted Self’s ass on a platter 2 years ago for not winning, and now they love him. Heck, 3 weeks ago they said he couldnt coach. Now look at him, he is a god. It is crazy how short sighted fans are, and if you could just step back and look where the program is compared to where it was 3 years ago, we are lightyears ahead. As for you, go ahead and jump off the bandwagon, but dont come back on in 2 weeks when Mizzou is a 4 seed in the tourney. You know as well as I do that Mizzou would have killed for a #12 seed about 3 months ago, and now idoits like you are complaining about a loss to he #1 team in the conference that has not lost at home in 2 plus years. Fans like you are the reason that Mizzou has a bad name.
