MU baseball shuts out Monmouth to stay alive
Kyle Gibson didn’t allow a run in eight innings of work as the Tigers beat Monmouth, 9-0, today to stay alive at the NCAA baseball regional in Oxford, Mississippi.
The Tigers must win twice on Sunday and then once on Monday to advance. They will play the loser of tonight’s Ole Miss-Western Kentucky game at 1 p.m. on Sunday. If they win, they will play again Sunday at 5 p.m. against the Ole Miss-Western Kentucky winner.
Gibson allowed base runners in all but two innings but surrendered no runs as he raised his record to 11-3. He struck out eight.
Ryan Gargano pitched the ninth for Mizzou.
Gibson, the team’s ace, was passed over for Friday’s start against Western Kentucky in the hopes of saving him for a winner’s bracket game but that strategy backfired when Western Kentucky surprised the Tigers, 11-5.
Aaron Senne had three hits and two RBI, and Kyle Mach four hits to lead the offense.
