AP poll will have to wait for Tigers … until Tuesday
The weekly AP football poll won’t be out this week until Tuesday because ranked teams are still finishing up the weekend. No. 8 Ole Miss plays today against Memphis and Miami and No. 18 Florida State play on Monday.
So Missouri will have to wait until then to see if the 37-9 win over Illinois to start the season was enough to move up.
It may take a while to join the rankings. Only two teams in the bottom half of the pre-season top 25 lost on opening weekend, and both of those were to ranked teams (No. 13 Georgia to No. 9 Oklahoma State and No 16 Oregon to No. 14 Boise State.)
On paper, the Tigers next three games look to be ones in which they will be favored to win: Bowling Green, Furman and Nevada. If they get those, that would set the table for a 4-0 record and a Thursday night game on ESPN in Columbia against Nebraska.
But before looking too far ahead, Bowling Green comes to Columbia on Saturday after opening with a 31-14 win over Troy. Bowling Green trailed 14-0 but scored the final 31 points. Quarterback Tyler Sheehan passed for 339 yards and two TDS, with receiver Freddie Barnes his favorite target with 15 catches for 157 yards.
No ranking is fine for now. Let the tigers advance each week in the poles. What is important is the end of the season.
Who cares about the polls.. The primary focus should be upon improving each and every week and taking down Nebraska and Kansas (which should lead to another XII North Title)
Polls matter for one major reason. Your teams gets covered nationally when you are ranked. i like seeing mizzou talked about nationally and their games making sportscenter. That happens when you are ranked not as much when you are not.
Mizzou should be ranked in the top 25. A resounding win over a favored Big Ten opponent on a neutral field. Hopefully they can stay focused, and not look past lesser opponents Bowling Green, Furman, and Nevada. If so, could be a great season.
Gary I want you to go to a bowl game this year but for God’s sake could you play any easier of a non-conference schedule? Pansy.
