Pinkel says coaches share responsibility for Gabbert
Gary Pinkel said the development of sophomore quarterback Blaine Gabbert falls on more than just the player’s shoulders.
“When breaking in a new quarterback, there is a transition package,” Pinkel said. “So much of that responsiblity comes from us (the coaches). He’s only played four games. There’s things he’s learned and he takes to the next game. But the responsiblity goes to both of us.
“I think we’re doing OK (on offense). We can add on what we think we he can handle. He knows what’s going on on both sides of ball.
“What I wanted from Blaine was focus and improve each and every week. The first thing I look at is decision-making in terms of managing a game; how you handle yourself, the fundamentals, whether clock management or don’t take sacks. I’m pleased with that.
“He’s pretty focused, learning each and every week. Some good, some bad. Try to keep improving. This shouldn’t be different from any other week. If he gets caught up in all those things (TV game, big-name opponent), he’s not focusing on his No. 1 priority, which is doing his job.”
