Big 12 bowl outlook

Notre Dame’s win over Navy kept the Irish as the first choice for the Gator Bowl which means the Jacksonville game won’t be part of the Big 12 equation this year if they select the Irish. It looks like the only way that could change is if Notre Dame loses big to Southern Cal in its final game of the season.

So, with that backdrop a look at how Big 12 bowls are stacking up this week:

BCS automatic: If Texas Tech beats Oklahoma and wins the Big 12 title game, they will land in the national title game.

BCS at-large: The Fiesta, which normally takes the Big 12 title game winner, would select an at-large team and would probably go with a one-loss Texas team.

Cotton: The odd-team out in the Texas Tech-Oklahoma-Texas trifecta is still the leader for Dallas.

Holiday: Still coming down to Missouri or Oklahoma State (assuming of course that Missouri doesn’t win Big 12 title game and go straight to Fiesta.) Predictions are split nationwide. ESPN prognosticators going with Missouri while CBS Sportsline and Sports Illustrated going with Oklahoma State. It will probably come down to which team the San Diego bowl thinks will sell more tickets.

Alamo: Looking like Missouri or Oklahoma State.

Sun: Probably Nebraska.

Insight: Kansas may get the trip to Arizona but not the game they had wanted at first of year.

Independence: An outside shot of Colorado becoming bowl eligible (would need a win over Oklahoma State or Nebraska).

Texas: No other Big 12 teams have chance to qualify.

Notre Dame will embarass themselves no matter what bowl they play in. In fact Mizzou can run cirlces around that team, with the exception of the head coach. Mizzou deserves better though than one of these toilet bowls

Weezer21:

What has Charlie Weis done as a head coach? He has fantastic recruits because its Notre Dame. So we do not know how well he would recruit at a lesser school. Given his great players, his teams have stunk. So I think the nod goes to Pinkel.

Wow, Notre Dame will get a BCS bowl bid? WTH?! I guess America can watch Notre Dame get their lunches handed to them on national television…

Gee whiz!

I don’t like Notre Dame but as far as the coaching goes….Charlie Weis owns 4 super bowl rings.

Mizzou needs to win big games in conference if they want a shot at a big bowl game. They can still have a chance to do just that in the Big XII Title game.

Freakin ND is right, how could they ever get into another bowl game? Let alone a BCS level game. Are we still living in the 60’s?

Unfortunately Mizzou held their own fortunes in their hands playing against two BCS quality teams in Texas and Oklahoma, they blew it. All they had to do was win one of them, but got blown out in both. Compared to ND, do they deserve a better bowl, YES.

That said, no one should be ashamed of going to the Alamo Bowl. This is a premier bowl game, just not in the BCS grouping yet. It the darling of ESPN, with the highest TV rankings of any of the bowl games. Great weather, beautiful scenery and some of the best food in the country.

Face it, Mizzou could do much worse and go to Shreveport or Mobile.

The Gator Bowl isn’t a BCS bowl. It’s just an automatic qualifier for the Big 12. Since ND has a contract with the bowl they have priority over who goes.

What if MU loses to KU and loses the title game? Brut Sun Bowl? I love the BCS.

Mizzou can’t win the big one so they don’t deserve to be going to one of the major bowls. Until they prove they can play with the Big 12 South, Mizzou might as well be playing in a Mid-Level conference. Big 12 North is awful. Mizzou hasn’t even been competitive in there losses to OU and Texas. Then they lose to OSU at home when the #1 ranking was waiting for them, that was weak. They soon will add another loss to the South in this years Big 12 Title game. This program is still not ready for prime time.

ND plays one of the hardest schedules year in and out and has earned the respect they receive. They also have one of the largest fan bases in the country and travel to away games. The country would much rather see ND in a large bowl game then MU. You either love them or hate em. Mizzou doesn’t give anybody any type of reaction either way.
