Chase Daniel and this week’s Heisman race

A look around the country at the various Heisman polls:

Chase Daniel is out of the top five for the first time this season in the Rocky Mountain News poll. It’s the hangover effect from the consecutive losses to Oklahoma State and Texas combined with other players starting to come through in big games on bigger stages. (It doesn’t help when you are the only one not on television on the first weekend of November.)

Sports Illustrated has Daniel at eighth. Heisman Pundit has him fifth. The Orlando Sentinel poll is usually out late on Tuesday or early Wednesday. ESPN only mentions Jeremy Maclin in its poll.

As topsy-turvy as the top-spot in the polls has been, so has the Heisman race. First it was Tim Tebow, then he got off to a slow start. Then it was OU’s Sam Bradford then he lost to Texas. Then it was Colt McCoy, then he lost to Texas Tech. Now, it’s Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell.

It certainly could come down to the Big 12 title game as an interesting sub-plot as long as voters hold their ballots until then. They are due on Dec. 7.

Daniel sounds like he wants to concentrate on another good November and get back to the Big 12 title game and let the chips fall where they may.
