A Cold Day In Baseball Heaven

The fountains are shooting red at Kiener Plaza. Turkey legs, hot dogs and other fan foods are sizzling on the grill. Beer vendors are hawking suds.

And, yes, intrepid fans are milling around downtown with red windbreakers and headgear. The air is damp, the wind is brutal and temperatures are just above freezing.

So why would the Cardinals make their fans suffer through some of the worst conditions St. Louis has ever seen on Opening Day?

Postponing the game was just not feasible. This is more a baseball issue than a Bill DeWitt issue.

Not only would the Cards have to recall a starting pitcher to work Saturday’s game, but the team would also risk burning up its bullpen during Tuesday’s day-night doubleheader.

With the team opening the season with games on 21 consecutive days, the schedule was challenging enough. The Cards were coming off a spring training that saw few starters work deep into games.

So while baseball couldn’t be played in Chicago, the Cards and Pirates are set to battle on through blustery, wet conditions.

Isn’t the wind blowing in from the North? Does anyone else think that’s going to create some problems for Chris Duncan in LF?

Leave Dunc alone! He’s primed for a great season at the plate. Besides, weather like today would make even Lou Brock have a hard time out there.
Go Cardinals!

Good luck to the Cardinals this year and stay warm today, Cardinal fans!
