Wainwright Didn’t Pitch To Contact

In the fifth inning, Adam Wainwright walked pitcher Paul Maholm leading off the inning. Two outs later, he also walked Nate McLouth.

This gave Ryan Doumit a chance to pull the Pirates even. But Wainwright whiffed him by pulling the string on a nasty 1-2 pitch, stranding two more runners — to run his total to seven.

His pitch count soared to 77, though, which means we’re likely to see the Parade Of 1,000 Relievers in this game.

When Wainwright is in the zone, he has been hard to hit. His fanned Adam LaRoche for his seventh K of the game.

Staying in the zone, though, has been difficult. He went to a full count with Andy LaRoche before walking him for his fourth base on balls of the game. He got ahead of Brandon Moss with a 1-2 count, then went to a full count.
This drew pitching coach Dave Duncan to the mound and got Trever Miller loosening up in the bullpen.
Wainwright finished walking Moss, which brought Jack Wilson into position to do damage.
Josh Kinney joined Miller in the pen. The Cards piddled a bit to buy him time, then Tony La Russa came out and got Wainwright — ending his day after 94 pitches.
Kinney was called in to deal with crisis. After retiring his first batter, Kinney walked pitcher Paul Maholm to load the bases. Good-bye Josh, hello Trever Miller.
