Cards Hopes Slip-Sliding Away

The Dodgers continued their charge in the fourth inning, with Rafael Furcal’s two-out RBI single past Cards third baseman Mark DeRosa.

Former Cardinal Ronnie Belliard scored that run, continuing his torment or his old team. He led off the inning with a single into left field and moved over on Russell Martin’s groundout.

Joel Pineiro got Dodgers pitcher Vicente Padilla to ground out, but then Furcal came through with his clutch hit and the Dodgers had a 4-0 lead.

Reliever Dennys Reyes replaced the unfortunate Pineiro to start the fifth inning. Pineiro’s appearance lasted just 63 pitches.

Sadly, this was the Pineiro Cards fans saw last season, not the Pineiro who starred for much of this season. This postseason flop won’t help his bid to get large money from the Cards before he tests free agency.

The Cardinals team I have watched in the last 2 weeks reminds me of the bad teams of the 1970s — some good players, no drive and no soul.

If Pineiro wants to leave, let him go. If Holliday wants to leave, tell him and Scott Boras to go to NY and see how he is treated by the fans and the media when he costs the Yanks a playoff game with a bonehead defensive play. The way this team is playing — no one is irreplacable, including El “Mr. Single” Hombre.

I am disgusted with the whole organization right now.
