And Mr. Irrelevant is . . .

Outside linebacker David Voboro of Idaho. The Rams took him with the last pick of the 2008 NFL Draft, thus giving him a free vacation courtesy of the Mr. Irrelevant folks.

The scouting experts are actually excited about this guy, suggesting he could have a legit chance to make the team. Scott Linehan took care of a kid from his alma mater.

So that’s it. The draft is over.  Keep pounding away with your comments — I’m sure the Rams read every one of them.

Regardless of what the Rams read, I’m sure your advertisers read the clicks and I’m sure the P-D doesn’t appreciate the discouragement.

Now comes the spin machine … Thanks God we’ve heard it all before. Who can forget Trung Canidat’s Pro Bowl season (the post draft prediction, at least).

I’ll wait and see, but the truth is, the team made some stretches and curious picks this year. Must be the Rams’ (and STL football Cardinals) and we should be immune to this.

Why is it that guys by the name of Jeff Gordon are such complainers and overall complete jerks!! If this clown had to actually write for a living, he would be residing under a highway overpass….luckily, he works for the PD and they take care of charity cases such as this. Hey, you gotta love these left leaning socialist type of newspapers for something!!

after the Rams pick donnie avery with the second pick and beating down the urge to put my foot through my television I am looking forward to picking first overall in the 2009 draft and scott linehan in the unemployment line………. picking the 11th ranked WR in the worst WR draft in NFL history as your first WR pick?????????….. they could have picked this loser up as a free agent when all teams pass on him….. they drafted him for his speed….. good good how long will it take for this guy to cash his guaranteed money cheque and retire in hawaii after the team cuts him??????? I’ll tell you really really fast… maybe topping his 4.29 in 40 time ……. the o line is in shambles and we pick a WR that even Marshal Faulk couldn’t believe…. why is it every year the Rams pick a guy no one heard of ????????? unbelievable……. the ghost of Mike Martz still remains but now without the talent to bail this team out……… how long until chris long asks for a trade??? two maybe three years of Ram crap?? guaranteed we lost steven jackson and tory holt after this draft and year…. the Rams had to hit a homerun with this draft to go 8-8 this year and they got caught looking on three straight under arm pitches…….. golf anyone????

Gordo’s a homo. He didn’t get any #’s at the draft party. I was there - he tried hard! haha

Okay, maybe I was wrong about most or all of Rams nation being on board their draft selections, but it looks like I wasn’t wrong about Gordo… see above comments… Who wants to go in on buying “www.firelinehan.com”?

Wow. It sure didn’t take long for the true character of the midwest to take over did it. Use of the N word. Calling people gay. Throwing the “L” word around like it’s a bad thing.

You know, I have defended St. Louis as an area that really isn’t the same as the rest of Missouri. Guess I was wrong. The true character of redneck white trash showed up. It’s a sad day when the only people I am prejudiced against are the whites who live here. And I’m white. Sad to have to hate your own race because they prove over and over they aren’t worthy of breathing air.

Jeff -
DO the Rams read these? I doubt it. Why is it that neither the local sportswriters nor the Rams spokespeople will even attempt to explain why the Rams saw Donnie Avery as the best WR in the draft (not to mention the best available player at pick 33!) when NO ONE ELSE in the league or football world did.
I can believe that the Rams have some knowledge/wisdom on the talent that others don’t have, but is it a secret that beats out 11 other higher rated WRs? And is that secret one that 31 other teams don’t know? Or did they take him that high because they heard that another team knew that great secret and they were going to take him before the Rams’ #65 pick? How is the Rams’ intelligence on other teams so good that they knew Avery wouldn’t still be there at 65? Why couldn’t they trade down 10 or 20 or 30 spots, still get Avery and get an extra pick?
I know the Rams will never reveal the truth here, but my real question to you is…..Why won’t they even acknowledge that their pick was a LONG reach by everyone’s standards, and at least offer some kind of explanation? And why won’t any reporter ask them that question directly?
You don’t have to be as big a jerk as Kevin Slaten to ask that question, but maybe he’s my only hope.

Can’t you dense idiots who are going off on Gordo understand the concept of sarcasm, and have the intelligence to be able to figure out at who it is directed? Since the answer is “no”, let me explain this to you: his comment about the Rams not reading your blogs is not directed at you, it is directed at the Rams, meaning THE RAMS DON’T GIVE A DAMN WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THEIR DRAFT PICKS.
RadicalThinker - well put.

Dear RadicalThinker,

I know exactly what you mean. Liberal shouldn’t be an insult. That coment using the “N” word was worthless and tasteless. And yes, St. Louis does have a pitch, a dash, a slice of read-neck to it. But if you visit Clayton, Chesterfield, Ladue, Creve Coeur… you’ll see that most if not all are classy well-rounded people. And while some may be liberal, some may be conservative, non will act or talk like “Ho-hum” with his/her classless banter.

I think everybody is putting way to much emphasis on this draft. As with all rookies, some won’t even make the team, and the ones that do will not be productive for a few years. So, we all need to take a wait and see approach. That being said, I do question their draft strategy, especially with Avery. I think he’ll be a good back, but I have to agree with most others in that the RAMS could have traded down a bit and still have gotten him. That assumes that somebody wanted to trade with them.

Overall, this is a good draft class, with only one C. Long as the only player that will have a significant immediate impact. The others might take a year or two to see what kind of impact they have.

And Gordo, you could have used a bit more tact. Maybe you can take lessons from “Ho-hum” (comment #9), he’s definitely a free thinker who doesn’t let anything get to him.

All you knuckleheads making those stupid comments still will be sitting in front of your ”IDOIT” boxes every Sunday cheering these guys on. Every Draft is a crap shoot, look at all the number ones and twos that were bust, and all the lower round picks that went on to be pro bowlers.

Hey Ram Nation or Jeff Gordon Hater Nation or Ram Hater Nation !
Now while i agree this gordon fellow seems like a douche i think all of your loyalties seem questionable at best. I have been a fan since the halcyon days of Merlon Olsen, James Harris, Jim and Jack Youngblood, Rod Perry and Lawerence McCutchens and Henry Ellard’s rookie seasons as well as sir Issac Bruce. And I am only 43 years old so for those of you not familiar with mathematics ( and it seems quite a lot of you aren’t ) that means since i was a very small boy probably 7 years old. Now having said this i’ve had my heart broken many times and questioned many front office and head coaches’ moves (including seeing the vikings win in the snow against the rams in the conference finals only to lose to the eventual super bowl winner’s in the ram’s backyard of southern california and often that being to a team the rams had defeated earlier in the year) i have to say Me Thinks You Do Protest Too Much. The rams after having moved to Saint Louis have played in 2 superbowls winning won and were exciting as well as revolutionary for a few years, they never did that while here and only the truly loyal fans continued as i have to cheer for them even after they left, i wonder if you would still if they moved again? The team there before now in arizona was a pathetic excuse for a team except for oj anderson and jim hart. You fans in the show me state need to show me something, and that is that you can refrain from being a bunch of wusses who want championships delivered fed ex and instead actually be loyal and go to the home games and pack the the Ed Jones Dome or whatever it is called this week and cheer the whole game as loud as you can to help our team no matter what their record is or their opponent is, you need to show me that on a sunday afternnon at 4 pm you really do not have a better place to be and stay throughout the game, win or lose. If you show our Rams that you really love them and are loyalists and not bandwagoneers they will love you back and succeed in the ways we all want them to, and then some 7 year old kid who grew up loving them won’t have to write to you when he grows up to remind you how spoiled you are, afterall you all have been acting like a bunch of southern californians the past couple of years, too cool for school, and not getting it when it come to live pro football. With a real NFL crown in your stadium me and 10 guys i know could win the 8 home games played there. There is no excuse for the fans of the rams who are fortunate enough to go the homes to continue to let down all of the ram’s fans, if you won’t stay and won’t cheer the whole game do us a favor and give your ticket to someone who will! So please stop whinning about the draft and start preparing to be in the seats cheering them on like a real NFL crowd does, as it is you get the team you deserve, and you so callled rams fans in missouri deserve a very meek team, that’s easily distracted by divisive side shows these past couple years rather than a unified team surrounded and supported by a nation of fans who are as fanatic about their team as anyone else is in these 50 states. Stop perpetuating the jokes and jeers made by rams haters and help the rams rise above it to return to the former glory. THESE ARE NOT THE SAME OLD RAMS! only the haters are the same old tired bigotted in bred and obtuse idiots they always have been. real football fans don’t bitch so go find some other team or sport to think you are superior to. You are either for the Rams no matter what or your against the Rams, there is no middle groud.

Hey, coastman, thanks not only for writing a post that is way to long for this forum, but also thanks for posting it twice… I’m sure no one read it, tool!

Anyways for everyone else, lets try and think of local sports personalities that are worse than Gordo… lets see, John Marecek for sure is worse… there’s Joe DeNiro, who’s worse, and Brian McKenna, but Brian, I dunno, nope, I think I was a radio show host, and I had to co-host with either McKenna or Gordo, I’d have to chose McKenna.

So there you have it: Marecek and Joe DeNiro are bigger tools than Gordo.

1st round Chris Long Virginia - can’t really hate that. Great guy, great genes, solid player. I wanted Dorsey, but oh well.

2nd round Donnie Avery, WR Houston - 2007 C-USA 1st team All-American (all-purpose back) ; 5’11, 186lbs ; 4.2 – 40 ; 4th in the nation in average of 112 receiving ypg ; 1,880 all-purpose yards in 2007 ; this guy sounds like the next Dante Hall but taller and stronger.

3rd round Joe Greco, OT Toledo - He filled in at LT when Nick Kaczur (Patriots) was hurt as a sophomore. 2007 3rd team All-american ; 3 time 1st team All conference (Mid-American) ; 6’5, 325lbs ; stud

4th round Justin King, CB/WR Penn St. - 1st team All Big 10. Rated the nations’ top CB out of high school, he went to Penn St - his freshman year he played offense and defense, switching to CB in 2006 ; lack of strength could be an issue ; 4.38 – 40 ; 40” vertical ; 5’11, 192lbs ; Mizzou fans: we took this guy and then the Chiefs took Will Franklin shortly after - 4.3 - 40 ; 6\’1, 215lbs.

5th round Keenan Burton, WR Kentucy - Hurt alot of his college career, but when he played he was very good. Burton had a banner junior season – 1st team All SEC ; 6’2, 195lbs ; 4.47 – 40 ; 43.5” vertical ; 4th in Kentucky history with 182 receptions. I like this guy.

5th round Roy Schuening, OG Oregon St. Started 50 consecutive games for the Beavers. 1st team all-american & 1st team All PAC 10. 6’4, 320lbs. Stud

7th round Chris Chamberain, OLB Tulsa – Coaching staff at Tulsa said he was the team’s best athlete. Will probably be converted to a Safety ; All-american honorable mention ; 1st team All C-USA ; 6’2, 226lbs ; 4.67 – 40

7th round Mr. Irrelevant ; David Vobora, OLB Idaho – Has been among the nation’s elite the last 2 years. Has been 7th and 3rd the last 2 years in tackles. 2007 All-american honorable mention & 1st team All-WAC ; 4.59 – 40 ; 6’1, 236lbs.

Now that I look at it, it\’s not that bad. My only worry is that most of these guys are from conferences that are not the power conferences. Now they go into the NFL. We will see soon enough!

7:45 pm April 27th, 2008

Come on now, Gordon. The Rams deserve to be ridiculed for their draft, as well as most of their drafts over the past decade. Here, they took Avery with the 2nd pick in the 2nd round, a high quality position, and Avery was the first WR taken in the draft while being ranked, at best, as the 10th best WR in the draft according to the draft experts. That’s fine if that’s the guy the Rams want, but TRADE DOWN!!! If the experts have at least 9 other WRs ranked better than him, trade down to get an extra pick because he will surely be there. The Rams could have had some other talent at that spot. Also, experts pegged Grecco as a 4th round pick, and the Rams took him with the 2nd pick in the 3rd round. It’s time to quit jerking around and get some people in the front office, and sidelines, who know football.

— Tim
7:49 pm April 27th, 2008

Hell why even draft at all? Obviously the draft experts know what is best for every team, let them rank the pklayers 1-245 and the NFL will just assign the players based on the experts rankings and draft order.

Maybe that will shut these people up!

Jeff- as you read the complainers, remember: You are PAID to be here blogging and posting. These numbskulls are gratis spending their Sundays whining and crying about your word choice.

Thanks to the PD for the great draft coverage.

— Rob
8:04 pm April 27th, 2008

Jason, you’ve got it all wrong. One of the reasons that the draft is so popular, and that you had two cable networks devoting non-stop coverage of it is because of the same fan opinions that you are trashing. If no one had strong opinions about the draft, then the coverages wouldn’t be there. That’s why baseball drafts never get much coverage, because fans generally don’t care.

And also, it would have been players 1-252, just so you know…

Here we go again. Mr. Gordon, regardless of your intention, your final comment was extremely condescending and insulting. As a wordsmith, you should understand how difficult it is to convey the subject of sarcasm in print. Your coverage here was sparse, at best; and your comment portrays disdain for doing your job. If you would prefer, we’ll just stop checking out your column; and then you won’t have the burdensome task of having to convey this information to your readers.

RadicalThinker & call guy,
Your comments are as absurd as those you are interested in denegrating. I detest those who feel the need to make insulting generalizations about entire groups of people based on the comments of a few individuals. Unfortunately, some people took personal offense to Mr. Gordon’s comments. They responded, irrationally, as though they were being attacked. Those comments were at least aimed at the individual. In the case of each of your comments, you chose to lash out at the entire Missouri population.

Who is the biggot? Who is making gross, insulting, stereotypical generalizations? I find it amazingly ironic that your response to the language used caused you to both respond in a manner far more prejudiced. I also find it ironic that two clear Liberals, the supposed party of tolerance, have so much hatred toward the state’s population. Why don’t you keep your political views on a different board, this one is for sports discussion.

— Elliott
8:48 pm April 27th, 2008

relax everybody … it’s only football! Besides, we can enjoy watching the KC Chiefs all year and Dorsey dominating and being the new Warren Sapp he was projected to be. Also, look at it this way, Donnie Avery goes down in Rams’ history alongside Trung, LP, and the ghost of Clyde Duncan.

— stagginator
8:51 pm April 27th, 2008

So what’s the overall grade? I’m disappointed we didn’t choose Dorsey - he’s a moose and Avery is an extreme reach. Another draft bust for the Rams? God I hope not. Devaney did draft Ryan Leaf right? Oh shit…

8:58 pm April 27th, 2008

Why all the analysis of a draft that will not produce results for 12 to 36 months (that is one to three years for the learning impaired)??? Why do folks, who have little if any info about these draftees suddenly become NFL scouts????

Some of you folks were probably screaming for TLR’s head when he left Albert Pujols on the roster when Bonilla was hurt.

Give it time before any judgement is made. You will look less like whiners and more like actual folks who know something.

— The Boz
8:59 pm April 27th, 2008

Boz, you’re talking out of your ass. And bluesteel, Ty Hill is a good player, and was worth the pick. Remember, we traded down with Denver that year. If he has a healthy 2008, he’ll be more than productive.

— Steven Daniel
9:01 pm April 27th, 2008

Steven, You used the “IF” word in regards to TH. He was & is not a first round pick. He is not physical enough, I am afraid that Avery & King will turn out the same way. When was the last time Rams got a DB that can deliver a big hit?

— bluesteel
9:20 pm April 27th, 2008

bluesteel, finding a DB that can deliver a big his is like finding intelligent and insightful comments in President George W. Bush’s speeches, they do exist, but they are more than simply rare. You need linebackers and safeties to deliver big hits. You need cornerbacks that have blazing speed and excellent ball skills… i.e Ty Hill. I’ll go ahead and predict a monster year for Ty Hill, okay?

— Steven Daniel
9:31 pm April 27th, 2008

thanks to austin for the info on the draftees.I kept searching the net for info and post dispatch did a surprising job.I was hoping for franklin or rucker, kind of a boring draft. GO CHRIS LONG!

— dennymojo
9:59 pm April 27th, 2008

I think the most amusing part of all the ranting about the draft is that none of it really matters until they show up on the field. If the Rams have great things to do with Avery, and see something they can coach on King, that is all wonderful; they aren’t going to show us the playbook on draft day. And as far as the selection order, it’s easy to say, within the confines of this blog, that any given player would be there later and they could trade down, because there’s no accountability here.

Meanwhile, the drafted players have to be signable and mesh with the team’s plans. I admit the team has done poorly (believe me, I own season tickets and scratched my head at my own decision to waste good money on some of those games last year), but that doesn’t necessarily relate to the players being drafted. It could relate just as much to the coaching that’s going on with the team; for instance, I have long thought that last year’s run of injuries (and Alex Barron’s continued false start woes) could actually be the result of poor offensive line coaching by virtues of players not being reminded in practice to use good form, leading to injuries when players are falling all over the place at game speed. I have no way to verify that, but it seems as plausible as anything, and if that is the case, drafting more mid-level offensive linemen isn’t going to help if they can’t coach themselves.

In short, there are a lot of fixes that have to happen on a team as bad as the Rams were last year; focusing this much energy on chastising draft picks is a waste of mental energy.

St.Louis is red-necks, fat asses, constant bitchers about life and highway “40″ ala I-64 and Cardinal baseball. Place is the perverbial definition of a true shithole midwest town, a cow town at that. Really Hitler?

Can we please just get back to football?
I agree that most of these picks were not bad picks at all, the Toledo guy was ranked in the second round in a lot of mock drafts, i like the picks really, except of course Avery. I agree that if you like him that much fine, but tell us WHY THEN, trade down, get something ANYTHING. It’s just sad the St. Louis media does not have the balls to call Scott out and say why Avery then when he was rated so low in comparison.

And to the coast guy, I am a true fan, but when the front office pulls a move like this, as a fan IMO you deserve an answer, and a logical one. Were not trashing all the players, but when we have so much talent, it is hard to take these losses, and all these front office mistatkes

NBC Sports gives them a D+. I didn’t look at every team but it was the lowest grade I saw given. I think a D+ is generous.

“St. Louis Rams
The Rams got a good player and filled a need with defensive end Chris Long, but went against their draft board to get him. They then reached for Houston Donnie Avery, a raw receiver who may not be ready to do more than return kicks, with the No. 33 overall pick. John Greco of Toledo is a fine tackle pass protection prospect.

Kentucky receiver Keenan Burton is injury prone. Cornerback Justin King is raw and may simply be a workout wonder. Tulsa safety Chris Chamberlain is another “measurables” pick. Idaho linebacker David Vobora is this year’s Mr. Irrelevant.”

Grade: D+

i didn`t think the rams were gona go after any wide outs that early in the draft. let be honest the rams defense perty much suck. the corners cant cover. they are always chacing WR like i did when i learning the game 20 years ago. looking at the rams defense makes me sick . i feel like no one really cares on that team they are just there to collect the money and fame. i can almost garantee if you get ride of most guys on that defense and get some guys from canadian football league they`ll do better job. cuz thoes guys are hungry and these guys are not. the coaching staff are too soft on these guys. lucky for them they dont have me for a coach i wouldn`t even talk to anyone fire most guys from my home b4 i go to work. i have seen better defense on arena football teams then the rams. rams players should be a shamed of themselves for calling themselves pro football players.

This is my first attempt to Blog anything. A ram fan since 1952 I cannot think of a moire horrible year than 2007. As a former coach I can only regret Linahan’s lack of motivation and requirement of ESSENTIAL PRACTICING beginning with the 1st day of summercamp! Day #1 will dictate how much the Ram Commanders have learned. Devanney’s first attemt should get a “good start” grade! And iin 2 years we’ll all know what grade Skip et.al. will get!
