Null Giddy After Getting Drafted
The winner of the “Happiest Conference Call with Reporters” award was quarterback Keith Null, the team’s sixth-round pick.
“We were just sitting here, not expecting it at all,” the giddy Null said amid a family celebration. “This is truly amazing.”
He was hoping to get drafted in the late rounds, but he realized the free-agent route was possible. Only Carolina brought him in for a visit and he didn’t attend the NFL Scouting Combine.
His stock soared after he starred in the Cactus Bowl, the NCAA Division II All-Star Game. And he only reached that game as a stand-in.
He talked to about 15 scouts at that game. Another six came to his pro days. He didn’t recall visiting with a Rams representative.
“I can’t even think right now, to tell you the truth,” Null said.
West Texas A&M ran the Texas Tech offense. “We threw the ball probably 95 percent of that time in that offense,” he said. “You couldn’t play in a better, more fun offense.”
His quarterback coach? The great Ryan Leaf, who later resigned after a painkiller possession beef.
“Coach Leaf was a great guy,” Null said. “The guy taught me a lot. It’s great to have somebody who had done it and been successful at it.”
OK, Null’s grasp of the NFL isn’t the best. But he did post insane numbers (5,097 yards, 48 TDs as a senior) at the D-II level, so he’ll be an interesting story.

What are the ‘insane’ numbers?
“The guy taught me a lot. It’s great to have somebody who had done it and been successful at it.”
LMAO
Could be an alright pick…could’ve definitely waited till free agency but I guess if they saw something in him then oh well…
The Rams have stretched more on Day 2 than the Bolshoi ballet. A troubling day in Ram’s Nation. Looks like they went for cheap signable players all day after a really good Day 1.
PASSING GP-GS Effic Cmp-Att-Int Pct Yds TD Lng Avg/G
Keith Null 13-13 167.54 385-562-15 68.5 5097 48 97 392.1
He threw 41 TDs last year
“West Texas A&M ran the Texas Tech offense.”
Then, why not draft Graham Harrell, instead of this div 2 guy? I don’t get it. Harrell threw for over 5000 yards (twice) against top competition, and the main knock on him is that he was a “system” QB. Well, then what is Null?
With Rashard Jennings still on the board, we take a guy from Texas who I can’t remember ever seeing the field. I have to agree that the Rams went on the cheap. I would be very surprised if any of these second day picks ever start a game for the Rams….or any other NFL team. This should be the opening chapter in the book, “How Not to Draft an NFL Team”.
Giddy? Try Are You Kidding Me! Did Billy Devaney Morph into Al Davis? I’ve seen some bad Rams drafts, Gaston Green, Laurence Phillips, but this is looking to be the biggest total day 2 draft busts of all time! Way to go Billy!
Of course he’s GIDDY… He should have been a Free Agent… There’s GOT to be a Ryan Leaf, Bill Devaney connection here… Looks like a talented guy, but you give up a 6th for someone you could have had as a FA? Devaney hasn’t prooved anything! In the REAL world people get fired for making poor business decisions. In the FAKE Rams world a guy can make millions…
As far as picks go, this one is NULL and void.
I live across the street from this young man in Canyon, TX. What a celebration going on over there!! I have followed his career here at WTAMU. This guys is a STEAL! Wait until you see his size and athleticism on display up there. He’s your future QB. On top of that, he is the finest, most decent young athlete I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He is, number one. a great QB, but he is also a great human being! The Rams got a good one.
