Rams-49ers, Second Quarter: San Francisco Moves Up 21-3

After the Rams stalled in the red zone early in the second quarter, Josh Brown’s 24-yard field goal cut the 49ers’ lead to 7-3.

But whatever momentum St. Louis gained with the scoring drive evaporated in a hurry.

Look! There’s old friend Isaac Bruce working over Jason Craft for 20 yards. That’s just not fair, a future Hall of Famer against free agent signed off the street.

Look! There’s Bryant Johnson blowing past Fakhir Brown for 42 yards. The Rams tried to blitz 49ers quarterback Shaun Hill, offensive coordinator Mike Martz had a quick pass called.

In not time at all, San Francisco was back in the red zone. And Hill finished off the drive with a 3-yard TD pass to tight end Vernon Davis.

This was not a good sequence for Rams defensive coordinator Rick Venturi, who wishes he had cornerback Ron Bartell on the field at full speed. This injury-depleted until hasn’t been able to control the run or apply consistent pressure on the San Francisco quarterback.

So the Rams found themselves in a deep 14-3 hole on the road.

Now Bulger was really up against it. The 49ers had the luxury of coming after him with all-out pressure.

Perhaps sensing that, Bulger called a timeout to regroup the offense. Then he fumbled away snap from center Nick Leckey to give the 49ers the ball back on the St. Louis 17.

Rams Nation wonders: Where is Trent Green?

Frank Gore dusted linebacker Will Witherspoon for 12 yards. And Gore kept banging away until the scored again, shucking Fakhir Brown as he got around the right corner.

Now the Rams’ deficit was 21-3. Uh and oh.

This could really get ugly if the Rams offense doesn’t answer.

They’ve already given up! Maybe not, though, because they’ve held San Fran to 12 points fewer in the first half than the Jets had.

Bulger should feel guilty about picking up his pay-check! This team is worse then anything they had in the 90’s. Please sell this team to someone who will hire good football people and not good buisness people the owner likes.

Is it my imagination or did Bulger jump backwards to avoid scrambling for his fumbled football?
