Second Quarter: Warner Leads Cardinals To 21-3 Lead
Kurt Warner got Arizona rolling again with a 14-yard completion on Larry Fitzgerald to convert a third-and-2 play. The Beanie Wells got loose off last tackle for a 16-yard gain.
Tim Hightower ripped off 11 more. Then Warner went over the top of the defense for a 27-yard pass to tight end Ben Patrick to put the ball on the Rams 11.
Then Larry Fitzgerald got wide open for an 11-yard TD catch — bouncing off cornerback Justin King in the process — and Arizona had a 14-3 lead. The Big Red needed just nine plays to go 90 yards.
This could get out of hand if the Rams don’t respond right now.
Cardinals kicker Neil Rackers gave the Rams a chance by booting the ball out of bounds on the St. Louis 43. So how did the Rams respond?
They started with a false-start penalty on Daniel Fells. They followed that with a three-yard Steven Jackson run, an incomplete Bulger pass (toward Brandon Gibson) and a false start penalty on Adam Goldberg (which he disputed).
That put Bulger in a third-and-17 situation. Against all odds, Marc gunned a 22-yard pass to Gibson to keep the offense on the field.
Bulger’s rollout pass to tight end Randy McMichael earned a first down on the Arizona 31. Another completion, to Avery, was good for six yards.
A couple of Steven Jackson runs netted just a yard, thanks to a poor (and unchallenged) ball spot on third down. Jackson got almost a yard less than he should have on that play.
On fourth down. coach Steve Spagnuolo opted to go for it — and Arizona easily stuffed Jackson to take the ball back on downs.
Warner went back to work, with completions to Boldin, Fitzgerald, Boldin and Boldin again (for 38 yards!) — moving the ball to the Rams 1. In between Warner’s completions, Tim Hightower broke off an 10-yard run for another first down for the pile.
On third-and-goal from the Rams 1, Beanie Wells crashed in for the third Arizona TD.
At this point of the game, the Cardinals have a slight 316-83 edge in total yardage. The Rams can only hope that Warner, knocked woozy by a blow to the head, will have to take the whole second half off.
Naturally, the Rams had to start their next possession on the 11, thanks to an illegal blocking penalty on the kickoff. Completions to Jackson, Danny Amendola, Gibson, McMichael and Ruvell Martin earned a couple of first downs.
But then Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson picked off an underthrown Bulger pass to give Arizona one more chance to score.
Matt Leinart replaced the groggy Warner with 47 seconds left in the half. He go nothing done, providing Rams fans with a slim measure of hope for the second half.

OH THE HUMANITY!!!
What absolutely horribly unimaginative and piss poor play calling on 3rd & 4th down and not getting the 1st down. And why is Gibson not in on every play?
don’t let the last couple of weeks fool you..this team is more like the first 7 than that. It is pretty much devoid of any semblance of playmaking talent on the defensive side of the ball. Oh, a fairly pathetic offense, led by an offensive line that makes lots of money but hardly blocks like it.
and some seriously horrific playcalling. If it wasn’t for Jackson, this team has not one player worth even an all-pro mention let alone selection.
It’s a stretch calling it an NFL team.
Are the Cardinals better than the Saints? What’s the deal with the night & day difference from last week?
I’m having trouble keeping up…
This ball control stuff is really working out well..the rams have 83 yards to the Cards 300+. The defense is about as bad as it gets for an NFL team.
And this team has one of the better former NFL defensive coordinators as the head coach. That’s how bad the personnel is on the defensive side.
Weak.
i thought we hired a def coach what a joke i would run them all off start over next year they are a worthless
This team couldn’t play any worse if they were intentionally tanking the rest of the season to nab that #1 overall pick in the first round!
Now is the perfect time to give Keith Null some experience - start him the 2d half. I am really really tired of Bulger. The team is incredibly flat so let’s see if Null can play.
THEY NEED TO BENCH MARC BULGER. This performance today has been absolutely pathetic.
