Third Quarter: Rams Still Lead 10-2
Steven Jackson got the Rams started in the second half by wading through multiple tacklers to gain a first down.
Then Daniel Fells wandered off the line of scrimmage for another motion penalty. Can’t blame the crowd noise for that one, Daniel.
Bulger went for the home run ball on second and 15, but overthrew the streaking Avery. On third and 15, the Rams opted to play it safe — so Bulger dumped the ball underneath to fullback Mike Karney to set up another Donnie Jones punt.
Defensive tackle LaJuan Ramsey dumped Kevin Smith for a 4-yard loss to start the Rams defensive sequence. This led to a and three-and-out stop. for the Rams.
On the second Rams offensive sequence, Bulger had a chance to run for a first down . . . but he slid down just short of the first-down marker. So the Rams offense departed on a three-and-out sequence.
Defensive line Clifton Ryan started the next Rams defensive sequence by flushing Matthew Stafford out of the pocket, allowing Chris Long to score the sack. This led to another three-and-out start for the Rams D.
Jackson got the Rams started on their next possession with a 9-yard burst, moving the ball into Detroit territory, Then he converted a third-and-1 play by plowing to the Lions 35.
Bulger fired a strike to Daniel Fells, who couldn’t take the hit and hang onto the pass. Then he fired a strike to tight end Billy Bajema, who took the hit and hung onto the pass for a first down.
Remaining aggressive, Bulger took at shot at McMichael in the end zone . . . but McMichael couldn’t come up with the catch.
Then Bulger got picked off trying to make a safe throw to Jackson coming out of the backfield. Defensive end DeWayne White tipped the ball, then dove for interception.
This took points off the board for the Rams, who were in easy field goal range for Brown.
The Lions turned this mishap into a momentum switch. They finally got their ground game restarted with Maurice Morris eating up big chunks as the quarter wound down.
