Not a Goodyear for tires
So we’re thinking Tony Stewart killed future relationships with the Goodyear tire folks. Dale Earnhardt Jr. did the same.
They were not happy with the performance of those tires over the weekend. And they were not shy about it.
Here is how ESPN.com’s Terry Blount summed up it: “As far as some of the drivers are concerned, the square rocks on Fred Flintstone’s car are softer and preferable to the Goodyear tires the Sprint Cup teams used Sunday.”
Ouch! Listen to the stars complain:
“If I were Goodyear, I’d be very embarrassed about the tire they brought this weekend,” Stewart said. “It was ridiculous. If they can’t do better than that, pull out of the sport. I guarantee you that Hoosier or Firestone could do a better job than that.
“To tell us the week before the race we have a new tire and expect everyone figure it out is very disappointing. I guess that’s why they got run out of Formula One, the IRL, CART and USAC, you name it. They couldn’t keep up and provide a quality product. Maybe they don’t have enough quality people. We had a tire that didn’t meet the standards of the competition. You felt like you were holding your breath all day. I’m real excited I didn’t crash. I’ve been racing 28 years and never seen a racing tire like this weekend.”
Now, it’s Earnhardt’s turn: “I know Goodyear doesn’t like criticism, but I’m not going to sit here and put up with this. We couldn’t race side by side or we would wreck. Hopefully we can all get along and do something about this.
“Please don’t bring this tire to Darlington. As horrible as today was, that would be worse. I’m not part of the test, but I’m going just to ask drivers how it feels out there.”
It’s going to be tough working those sound bites into a Goodyear commercial . . .

Thank God I got fired yesterday. They’re going to pay me $150,000 to go away. I didn’t know you could earn bonuses for losing, what a deal! At the recommendation of Rep. Gerald R. Ford, he worked for the Warren Commission, investigating the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Even though our podunk school fired it’s basketball coach we are still the best in the state! We even scheduled all male teams to play against next year to prove it!!!

According to ESPN.com, 74% of its voters voted against a spygate congressional hearing. I guess that gives away the fact that 74% of its website visitors are from Boston.
I went to the Cardinal Spring Training game on Saturday (after driving 180 miles). They lost 20-6. What a disappointment. The Dead Birds deserved to lose that game. I know that it’s just Spring Training, but the Dodgers showed that they wanted to win that game and the Cardinal players put no effort into their game. The game was more than disheartening, it was sickening. That game really made me question the heart of this organization. I beleive that you should practice like you want to play, and if that’s all the spirit these losers can muster i feel sorry for all the fans who’ll be being hard-earned money to see this sort of lackluster entertainment.
To #7…..its spring training…their not gonna play like its the playoffs. you’re an idiot for driving 180 miles to see a spring game. this organization has more heart than many others combined. don’t question that, you look stupid.
This past weekend was just the beginning, we are all seeing the future……this team will be no better than the last one….Dimwitt should dump all of the high priced players and player the AAA team, that will make him the most money….
Hey Mike…lay off the guy. Your an idiot to drive 10 miles to see a regular season game is the comment that you should have made. The dude went to spring training and offered support for a loser franchise and you bash the guy. If I spent a day of my vacation seeing this losing club I’d yell and scream louder than S.W. when his mom runs out of boo-berrys. You’d hear about it for weeks. Disappointed in FL is just providing a preview of what to expecct this year. He probably didn’t have to spend $5 for a hotdog and $8 for a beer to see this miserable team though….so actually, he is the smart one.
They are already losers? They haven’t even played a regular season game yet. “Baseball’s best fans” and “Baseball Heaven” are the stupidest things i’ve ever heard. This WINNING club has been the second best franchise in baseball probably the classiest of all time. Grant it, we are are rebuilding and we could have gotten better players over the offseason, but they are still the Cards and I will be supporting them. Stop acting like we’re a big market team and can spend ludicrous amounts of money. Out TV contract is laughable compred to nyc, boston, la, and chicago. With the way this city is going down the toilet, you should be thanking your lucky stars that we still have a team.
Funny…..didn’t the owners say we needed a new stadium to be able to go out and get some big name free agents?? Going into year 3 and I guess Juan Gonzales is what they were promising. Now, if we could just get Ballpark Village up for the owners w/ tax payers money……..think who we will sign then. Albeit, from the NEW owners since DeWitt will sell this club as fast as the last retail space is rented.

Some of us are already panicking about the Roidbirds since they seem to approach spring training the same way the Rams approach preseason, go through the motions and get continuously pounded.
The National League champions come to town in 21 days to start the season, when may we expect the pitching/defense to hold opponents to single digits?

I’m more than willing to give this club an “off” year…I’ll just be praying to Allah, JHVH, God Our Father, Shiva, Krishna, Mowmow Umbele and the Tooth Fairy that other teams are too cheap to hold on to the dirth of free agent All Stars who are scheduled to flood the market this Winter.

Let me just clarify a bit on this, while I don’t enjoy seeing my old home town lose, and I do expect their to be losses due to off days or not having enough talent to win (injuries?), I did want the Cardinal players to at least try. The sense that I got from watching them is exactly what “Ten High” said. They were going through the motions. It was the preseason for the Dodgers as well but they played their practice game like they wanted to win. The Cardinals seemed like they were just passing time until the game was over and could head to the bars.
Would everyone rather see our guys running catchers over at plays at the plate like the Tampa/Yanks game the other day? It’s SPRING TRAINING for crying out loud. I didn’t get to go down to Jupiter this year so I haven’t seen first hand, but what everyone has been telling me is there is a lot of fierce competition going on because of all the unsituated positions left. They are playing hard from what I hear…
Edmonds is hurt, Marquis is acting like an idiot, Suppan is throwing .500 ball (like he always did), etc etc etc. Nothing we lost over the past couple of years would excite me at the moment. As much as I hate to admit it this is probably the best we can do under the circumstances. Moving Rolen and Edmonds ought to free up from money, and maybe we will at last see if the pursestrings really will be opened, especially during the trade deadline if we are in it. For now, this team isn’t too far off the best we could have expected going into the season. Reality sucks, eh?
