PM Update: Favre Watch shifts to Tampa

So . . . Brett Favre could become a Buccaneer. Interesting.

That franchise goes through quarterbacks the way Spinal Tap goes through drummers. Just as former Buccaneers starter Bruce Gradkowski, who seems to have made a happy landing with the Rams.

Coach Jon Gruden is a restless man. He had Jeff Garcia – a decent veteran option, especially compared to Chris Simms – but you just knew that Favre would intrigue him.

Brian Griese figured he could get a crack in Tampa Bay this season, but he, too, is feeling jilted as the Favre Comeback Tour comes to town.

FoxSports.com
scribe Alex Marvez explained why this move made sense:

“Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden runs a West Coast offense that Favre should have an easy time learning, considering he played in similar systems throughout his Packers tenure. Favre and Gruden have familiarity from when the former was a Packers offensive assistant in 1993 and 1994. Tampa Bay has the salary cap space to accommodate Favre’s $12 million base salary. Favre would be playing for what would become a legitimate Super Bowl contender, and even have a shot for revenge against the Packers during a Sept. 28 matchup.”

Although Favre was greeted by adoring fans during his abbreviated return to Green Bay, even the Cheeseheads are tied of his melodrama.

ESPN.com
notes that “Favre has seen a sharp decline in his favorability among many Wisconsinites, a new survey shows. Only 47 percent had a favorable view of Favre, while 34 percent had an unfavorable view. The survey of 600 people likely to vote in the November presidential election was conducted Sunday and Monday by the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent. In a survey last December, 73 percent of the people in Wisconsin had a favorable view of Favre and 7 percent had an unfavorable view.”
