Another Vandy mess for South Carolina

As it turns out, Steve Superior, er, Spurrier isn’t building a college football juggernaut at South Carolina. He isn’t replicating the amazing success he had at Florida.

Some days, in fact, the Gamecocks look more like Spurrier’s dreadful Redskins teams.

Such was the case Thursday night when Vanderbilt upset the No. 24 Gamecocks 24-17. This is the second year in a row the smart kids from Vandy toppled Spurrier’s team.

“Last year’s was just as stunning, and it sort of irritated me that our players tried to say we weren’t ready,” Spurrier said. “We were ready to play, we just got our tails kicked. I’m sure those Vanderbilt players are wondering what kind of excuse the South Carolina guys have now. We don’t have excuses, they just beat us.”

Now it is back to the golf course, er, drawing board for Spurrier as he looks for answers . . .

AN INNOVATIVE NEW RETAIL CONCEPT

In these difficult times, more Americans are pondering the meaning of life. Fortunately, University of Tennessee star Arian Foster appears ready to help.

A philosophy store? How much would a three-month supply of existentialism cost?

MYSTERIES OF THE UNIVERSE

Questions to ponder while wondering if the still-punchless Redskins will win any games this season:

  • How long will the Rams offensive line remain in one piece this season?
  • How many pairs of shoes will be ruined Friday at the muddy BMW Championship?
  • Will the new “Ocho Cinco” Bengals jerseys set new merchandise sales records? Aren’t we obligated to buy one?

FIRST AMENDMENT? WHAT FIRST AMENDMENT?

The University of Virginia has banned all fan-made signs at athletic events. The decision apparently dates back to last season, when student had his “Fire Groh” sign (and the subsequent replacement signs) confiscated.

The student was being critical of Al Groh, the not-entirely-successful football coach. This school year, UVA won’t tolerate such disloyalty.

This act drew a critical editorial response from the Lynchburg News & Advance: “If Thomas Jefferson were alive today, he would probably be hiding his face in shame at the recent behavior of officials at the University of Virginia, the school he founded in Charlottesville and based on Enlightment principles.”

QUIPS ‘R US

Here is what some of America’s leading sports pundits have been writing:

Bill Simmons, ESPN.com: “Tony Romo spent a lot of time with Jessica Simpson these past eight months. Remember how dumb she was on ‘Newlyweds’? I mean, she was historically dumb. I have written before about how unfunny people can learn to become relatively funny just by constantly hanging out with one funny person. Well, when you spend every waking moment with someone who’s historically dumb, do you stop using all of your brain as much? How much of your cerebrum would you need? Twenty percent? Couldn’t you shut the rest down? What if that happened to Romo this spring and summer?”

Greg Cote, Miami Herald: “Olympic swimming sensation Michael Phelps has eight gold medals, is dating Australian gold-medal swimmer Stephanie Rice, has signed to write his autobiography, will present at the Video Music Awards and will host the season premiere of Saturday Night Live. When I was Phelps’ age, I bought a new pair of foam dice for the rear-view mirror of my ‘64 Buick Skylark.”

Dwight Perry, Seattle Times: “The name of the Web site says it all: WomenAgainstFantasySports.com. Women jilted by their fantasy sportsmen can purchase T-shirts inscribed with ‘I Thought I Was Your Fantasy,’ or ‘Fantasy Sports Widow.’ Not to mention shorts reading ‘Closed For the Fantasy Season.’”

MEGAPHONE

“I just hate the Dodgers. I love to see them lose. It’s nothing personal with anyone there. You know how some people love the Yankees? I choose to hate the Dodgers.”

Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle.

How is it “breaking news” that Chad Johnson has changed his name? ESPN has really hit rock bottom with this crap. Guess what, Johnson has played you for the saps you really are.

Glad to see TLR throw down the gauntlet and put the heat on the front office. As was said the other day, the free pass has expired and the clock is ticking.

The Redskins may just be worse than the Rams, but that won’t help on Sunday:

Eagles – 31 Rams – 17

I’ll admit I can grumble about the bone-headed antics of team owners, coaches and general managers with the best of them. But has SW ever had anything good to say about them? When the Rams won the Super Bowl, did he complain and consider them a failure because they didn’t win by 30? What does SW stand for, anyway? Super Whiny?

Don the legend makes an appearance. Guess what, the complaining about S.W. schtick is already taken, find something else to complain about…

Bill Simmons used to be occasionally funny. Now he is dull and recycled…seems a perfect fit for Tipsheet actually.

Bellerive should be thoroughly destroyed by the end of this weekend, but at 90 grand a pop to join (90 grand!) they ought to have the dough to fix it back up…

Don, do you have a point? Maybe an opinion or counter to what I stated earlier? I guess you ran back to tell mommy that I hurt your feelings. Quit sucking your thumb and have a debate. You’re exactly what’s wrong with the “fans” in this town, ALWAYS drinking the kool-aid and never want to state truths or fact.

I think TLR is echoing what fans (some on this blog)have done and that is put Cards ownership on notice that they are expected to pony up the cash to make the team a top contender next year, or else. With significant salaries rolling off at the end of this year there will be no excuse for apathy in the free agent market. If DeWitt and company set idle this offseason, look for an Oakland Raiders type demise for the Cardinals over the next decade.

S.W. I always argue your points, but you never dare respond to me…why? Scared to have a debate? Too busy drinking the Slaten Kool-Aid?

“The Redskins may just be worse than the Rams…”

Is that your bandwagon today? If I remember the Giants lost by giving up 80 pts in their first two games last year and things worked out well for them.

Also, who should listen to you and your predictions? Remember, you promised the Cardinals wouldn’t win more than 60 games. Remember???? I won’t let that one go until, you have the balls to (in your words) debate.

You never respond unless its to the joe schmoes, who you can easily tear apart. You ignore the ones that just might make a point against your useless daily diatribes about conspiracy theories and the such (a la Kevin Slaten).

Now, all I ask is that you smile…you’ll like it.

Tim,

BTW, I am still waiting for your response to the LT comment. I understand your response of taking a shot at someone’s optimism, because that’s something that isn’t factual and you can’t back up with numbers, just opinions. However, my point about LT stands…and yet you avoid that part. Typical!

Way to play it safe and pick you battels.

Just for you I’ll misspelled battles above so you can just point out the spelling mistake and avoid talking about true sports facts

Sorry Really, I had to go back and look at the previous days to figure out what in the hell you were talking about. Turns out someone named just1beer made that comment about Jackson getting hurt the first game, not me. You responded to him with your “LT” question.

Calling me out to answer a question to someone else? Now that’s playing it safe cupcake.

Why don’t you delight us with another mirror reference while you are at it nimwit ROFL!

Touché!

I made a mistake and for that I am sorry.

As for the comment you did make: “Look at the history and quality of this roster.” What history am I to look at 2007 and that’s it? Or can I look at 2006 when Bulger threw for 4300 yrds and 24 tds? Jackson ran for 1500 and caught 800. Holt caught almost 1200. Do that year not count because it hinders your argument?

Now I don’t mind you saying look at last year, but try not to say look at the history of this team. I would say a few of the key players have had some great seasons. Last year? Maybe not. Are they past their prime? Maybe so. But we’ll have to see. But don’t diminish what they have accomplished over their careers based off of one lousy season. Do you really not see any upside on this team? It can’t get any worse!

For the record, I mostly agree with your thoughts (minus the love for hockey) but sometime do not (case in point). You make a lot of good points, and I like that fact that you are willing to have a discussion when people disagree on a topic. After all - isn’t that what a blog is for? Keep it up, and I look forward to many more spirited debates.

Also, I want to apologize for any person shots as well. That is out of character for me. I will keep it to sports from here on out.
