PM Update: SEMO, the UNLV of our state

Poor SEMO is in trouble with the NCAA again.

Earlier, both basketball programs were placed on two year’s probation – and the women’s program forfeited 44 victories – for rules violations under former coaches B.J. Smith and Gary Garner.

Now, current men’s coach Scott Edgar is under the microscope. The school placed him on administrative leave pending its investigation of new NCAA allegations.

Also, athletic director Don Kaverman got the short haircut Thursday.

“Given the serious nature of the allegations, we believed we needed to take immediate action in the best interests of the program,” school president Kenneth W. Dobbins said in a statement.

“Southeast is extremely disappointed with these allegations. We consider the allegations of NCAA infractions regarding our men’s basketball program to be a matter of significant concern.”

The Redhawks have faced hard times in men’s basketball in recent years. They lost 14 of their last 15 games last season under Edgar, who is 23-49 at the helm.

Maybe SEMO should have considered Jay Spoonhour more seriously before hiring Edgar . . .

GOOD LUCK COLLECTING THAT

An arbitrator has ruled former Detroit Lions receiver Charles Rogers must repay the team about $8.5 million in bonus money, the Web site MLive.com reported.

Great. Let us know how that turns out.

MOVE OVER, BILLY BOB THORNTON

Reds skipper Dusty Baker will be managing this fall after all – for the Hard 90 Pastime, a traveling team for 10-and-under players in Northern California.

Darren Baker, the former Cubs bat boy, talked his dad into running the team.

“The head coach is away for the weekend. I begged my dad to coach the team,” Darren, a second baseman, told the Associated Press. “I’m very excited because it was his dream to always coach me.”

Darren’s mom Melissa was “shocked” Dusty took the gig.

“Darren sort of persuaded him,” she said. “The funny thing is that Dusty just can’t get over the goofing around that still goes on with these 9- and 10-year-olds. He wants them to always hustle and stay focused.

“He didn’t think it would be this soon. He thought he would have to wait until he was retired to coach Darren. That’s what he wants to do when he’s out of the game.”

That is wonderful for Dusty. How many of those 9 and 10 year olds is he gonna have throw 120-140 pitches?
