Mike Singletary, Motivational Master
San Francisco 49ers interim coach Mike Singletary has made quite an impression since replacing Mike Nolan.
Here is just a taste of the Singletary Experience:
Here is the Singetary Experience remixed:
Catchy beat, eh? Singletary’s over-the-top news conferences guarantee him a spot in future Coors commercials.
His excited coaching style also makes him easy to parody, as CBS funnyman David Letterman proved:
But, hey, his bulging-eyes approach has inspired the 49ers to play hard. Laugh all you want, but the 49ers must seriously consider keeping this man at the helm:
MYSTERIES OF THE UNIVERSE
Questions to ponder while how serious the Cardinals are about signing Brian Fuentes:
- Will the latest Blues call-up, defenseman Jonas Junland, prove he belonged in the NHL all along?
- Who could have guessed Reggie Bush would suffer a season-ending knee injury?
- Where does Bush go in fantasy drafts next year, the 14th round?
- There is a South Carolina-Upstate? Really?
A BIG SPLIFF ON THE HOOSIERS
Kelvin Sampson’s short tenure at Indiana was memorable. By breaking NCAA recruiting rules, again, he ran himself out of college coaching.
And the more you learn about his time in Bloomington, the more you wince. The Indianapolis Star reports that drug use created a great divide in the program.
A block of Sampson recruits lived in a world of their own. “It was the guys that were doing drugs that were separate,” former Hoosiers guard Eric Gordon told the newspaper.
“Sometimes it felt like it wasn’t even a real basketball team because of all the turmoil that went on,” Gordon said.
Former Indiana guard Adam Ahlfeld acknowledged the rift. “I wasn’t really with those abusing drugs, so I can’t say what was really going on,” he told the newspaper. “I wasn’t involved in any of those things.”
A BATTERING RAM?
New Rams tackle Anthony Davis is getting sued, according to the Courthouse News service:
TAMPA (CN) - A man claims two Tampa Bay Buccaneer football players assaulted and battered him in an IHOP parking lot. Brian Gordon sued Anthony Davis, Michael Bennett and IHOP in Hillsborough County Court.
Gordon claims that as he ate in the IHOP on Oct. 13, Davis, who was drunk, harassed the staff and patrons, calling two fellow diners ‘sluts’ and whores,’ yelling at the waitress and cook to ‘give me my (expletive-expletive) food!’ and so on.”
He claims Davis threatened him with physical harm, then placed a phone call to Bennett and another man, who arrived in a car. Gordon says Bennett ‘brandished a black handgun in a holster,’ and that Bennett, Davis and the third man then beat him up in the parking lot. And he claims that no agent of IHOP intervened.
QUIPS ‘R US
Here is what some of America’s leading sports pundits have been writing:
Rick Reilly, ESPN.com, on North Carolina star Tyler Hansbrough: “‘Psycho T’ gets to the line more often than a pro bowler. He led the nation in free throw attempts last season, and nobody was even close. He keeps swinging his nose into people’s elbows. Of all the nerve!”
David Thomas, Fort Worth Star-Telegram: “As further proof that Teen Wolf might be the most influential film of the 1980s, a Tampa Bay Buccaneers player has officially changed his name in honor of one of the characters in the movie. As reported by TBOblogs.com’s Bucs Report, defensive end Greg White has changed his name to Stylez G. White. In the 1985 movie staring Michael J. Fox, there is a character named Rupert ‘Stiles’ Stilinski. White said he’s always liked the name and decided to make it his own. We’ll know that Stylez White has taken it too far if he takes up ‘van surfing.’”
Mark Kriegel, FoxSports.com: “No one’s talking about the human cost of the canceled Arena League season. It’s so bad there’s word that Philadelphia Soul owner Jon Bon Jovi might even go back on tour.”
Norman Chad, syndicated columnist: “In 2002, (Herm) Edwards famously said, ‘You play to win the game!’ Actually, it appears Herm plays to lose the game: He had a losing record as Jets coach over five seasons and now has a losing record as Chiefs coach over three seasons. This month, Edwards, asked if he’s a candidate for the job at San Diego State, said, ‘I’ve got a college team right now.’ Actually, it appears the Chiefs have a college coach right now — and not a particularly good one.”
MEGAPHONE
“On one level, it’s been absolutely something I’d never want to do again. And the on another part, it’s been just the greatest time in the world. Training every day, it’s been a little rough at times, but getting through it. But being able to spend time at home with Sam and watch her grow, it’s something I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do.”
Tiger Woods, on his lengthy rehab.

I was sorry to read about the death of Slingin’ Sammy Baugh:
-All-American at TCU
-NFL Hall of Fame
-Played entire career 1937-1952 without a face mask
-Lived in a condemned hotel during the Depression
Literally the last of a dying breed.
A lot of people played without face masks and lived in rancid conditions back in that time. Whoop-tee-do…
Tim:
Just because the anonymity of the internet allows you to be a jerk and anal pore, it doesn’t make it OK to be that way. Just ’cause you can doesn’t mean you should.
Grow up and / or go away.
Sammy Baugh was a good guy in an era when football wasn’t the made for mouth breathing couch potato TV fan game that is now so easy to ignore.
Sad to see him pass.
Tim,
What would make you compelled to post regarding Sammy Baugh. Are you ignorant, obviously, childish, or boorish? Apparantly all of the above. p.s. Look up any words to which you don’t know the meaning.
Tim, you are usually funny, but not today. Dude led the league in passing TDs, defensive interceptions (as a safety) and punting average (a record 50+ yards, net, that still stands) IN THE SAME SEASON. So while I will not go all DJ Axeom on you, I would urge you to do a little homework before popping off. RIP, Slingin’ Sammy Baugh.
RIP Sammy Baugh. He was probably the best all around player (based on stats)to ever put on the uniform. How did he live to be 94?
It appears since Carl Peterson was fired that Herm Edwards will be out as coach in KC. Lets hope the Rams don’t have a phone number for either one of them.
Sorry guys, wasn’t trying to be funny. I know/knew a lot of old timers from that era, and they were all tough. I think I misunderstood the point just1 was making. No disrespect meant to the great Mr Baugh. My bad.
I can handle my own criticism DJ, thanks anyway.
Class act DJ
DJ,
What’s your problem ? got your undies in a bunch ? what a putz you are …
Who do you think would be able to move the Rams down the field right now? An ailve Bulger or a deceased Sammy Baugh?
