Donovan McNabb Pulls a Giant Prank

At the spur of the moment, it seemed like the thing to do.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb scrambled out of bounds in the waning moments of his team’s playoff victory over the Giants.

While over there, he spotted one of the Giants’ team phone. So he picked it up and feigned a quick conversation.

Funny stuff, for sure, but this was a serious breach of NFL decorum. Fox broadcasters Joe Buck and Troy Aikman were horrified.

What was he thinking?

“I’m gonna get ripped,” McNabb told Yahoo! Sports. “That is the story of my life. It’s something to talk about: ‘Donovan, what an idiot.’ ”

MYSTERIES OF THE UNIVERSE

Questions to ponder while eagerly anticipating Rickey Henderson’s Hall of Fame speech:

  • If Jim Rice is a Hall of Famer, why isn’t Andre Dawson? Wasn’t The Hawk a much better all-around player? (Too bad this Internet campaign failed.)
  • What does Lee Smith have to do to get more love? Do voters believe all those games saved themselves?
  • Isn’t it time to show closers a little more love?
  • And why is there no place in Cooperstown for Tommy John and his famous elbow ligament?

DOES THIS EXPLAIN JAKE DELHOMME?

This is just one theory of what went wrong for Carolina’s interception-prone quarterback.

STEINBRENNER HE’S NOT

Had Mark Cuban bought the Cubs, he wasn’t going to tap his personal wealth to obliterate the Cardinals and Astros. Or so he wrote in Blog Maverick:

“I had no intentions of trying to outspend the Yankees or Red Sox. There was no reason to. I didn’t have to beat either of those teams unless I made it to the World Series. The only teams I had to be better than were those in the National League, and more importantly, those in my division. There were no big spending rivals close to home, so the AL East could spend themselves silly. My plans were to spend to win, not to spend for spending’s sake. IMHO, the money I could save being in the 2nd tier of payroll could be invested in scouting and development.”

QUIPS ‘R US

Here is what some of America’s leading sports pundits have been writing:

Mike Klis, Denver Post, on the Broncos’ youthful hire: “(Pat) Bowlen picked (Josh) McDaniels even though there’s not a responsible bartender in Colorado who wouldn’t first greet the Broncos coach by asking to see his ID. McDaniels is three years younger than Broncos center Casey Wiegmann and five years younger than injured center Tom Nalen, who is expected to retire anyway.”

Dan Daly, Washington Times: “Was anyone else annoyed by Oklahoma’s offensive routine - line up quickly, then pause and look to the sideline for the play? It was like watching Sergio Garcia stand over a golf ball a few years back - constantly regripping his club, unable (or unwilling) to start his swing.”

Scott Ostler, San Francisco Chronicle: “Tiger Woods might have to adapt his swing because of his surgically repaired knee. But nobody is better suited to tinkering with his swing. Tiger can change his swing faster than Superman changes his underwear.”

Greg Cote, Miami Herald: “Did you notice the religious Tebow had written ‘John 3:16’ on the eye black he wore? I hauled out my dog-eared Bible to refresh myself on the passage, and sure enough it made sense. It’s the one that reads, ‘For God so loved the world that He gave me Percy Harvin.’’”

MEGAPHONE

“I’ve just been chalking it up to the Braves have bigger fish to fry. But it seems like somebody keeps coming along and eating all our fish.”

Braves slugger Chipper Jones, complaining to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about his team’s Hot Stove League campaign to date.

To the Joe Buck haters: You will never find anyone in the business who will tell you that Joe Buck got where he was because of his dad. In fact all you ever hear is how his dad wouldn’t do squat for him when he was up and coming. Any claim to the contrary is pure bullshit and you know it. I don’t care that you hate him or can’t stand him or whatever, but don’t make up crap about his old man to help justify how you feel.

corby, so he stopped doing Cards game during the week? Why would you give a rat’s ass? He is out of town every weekend so he decided not to spend every night at Busch during the week. Good for him. If that was the last straw for you then you are apprently some kind of weak little pussy. Turn in your guy card the first chance you get.

Joe Buck is the worst announcer? Did any of you bozos hear the Fox coverage for the Fiesta or Orange bowls? How about John Madden and his mumbling run-on sentences week after week? It’s a good thing you tone-deaf shit-for-brains aren’t the ones evaluating broadcast talent in this country.

Rex Ryan makes too much sense for the Rams

Mark Cuban’s management ideas sound a lot like those of the Cardinals, except he hasn’t forced his fans to go almost 3 whole years without a world series. Has anyone at MLB noticed that baseball’s ratings have dropped about 70% since Tim McCarver and Joe Buck have been doing the games? How do they still have jobs?

THAT must be what it is! It isn’t steroids, or ridiculous contracts, or the continued economic imbalance that screws over small and middle market teams, or having the World Series go into November. It is the two guys on Fox who are broadcasting a few playoff games (about 0.7% of all the games on TV in a year if all the series go the max) that are completely ruining the ratings on TV. Marc, calling you a shit-for-brains is insulting to shit.

JBIG, steroids, big contracts, economic imbalance, and November World Series games, haven’t seem to attendance. MLB attendance has gone up 10 consecutive years. But World Series ratings drop. And who has been broadcasting all those games? Joe and Tim. If they were a sit com, they’d have been canceled years ago. By the way, that economic imbalance has produced 7 different World Series winners in 10 years. And there’s never been a November World Series game, except in 01, and that was because of 9/11. I look forward to your profanity laced response to my reasoned argument.

McNabb’s phone gag was hilarious! Just like when Randy Moss mimed the mooning of Green Bay fans a few years back, which Buck also thought was one of the greatest crimes against humanity. So Joe, an apparently informed broadcaster, did not know about GB’s infamous tradition of mooning the opposing team’s bus, and that this was Moss’ response to that? Hey Joe, thanks for trying to stuff your opinion down my throat, but I’ll decide for myself if I find it offensive.

See… you CAN write a rebuttal without using bad words. Try it… you’ll like it!

If you believe there are 32 teams in baseball, and they play world series games in November, then it’s not surprising you believe Tim and Joe are great broadcasters. (I’m surprised none of those 5000 ESPN articles mentioned there are only 30 teams?)

Remember when Don Mattingly leaned into the first row to catch a foul ball, and while he was there he swiped a handful of a kid’s popcorn? Everyone thought it was cute, but the NFL would have banned him for life. The NFL doesn’t like players ad libbing.

In other words, you have no defense for your dipshit comment. That’s what we all thought. Blaming Buck and McCarver is the apex of talking out of your ass. I’d like you to quote where I said Tim McCarver is a great announcer you illiterate twit. Maybe the family dog better read it to you again. Where’s your “reasoned” defense about attendance now? You got nothing but your dick in your hand and a blank look on your face.

Your momma should of swallowed that load from your old man.
