Yang Scores Top 10 Sports Upset

Tiger Woods never lost a major tournament when leading after three rounds. So, yes. Y.E. Yang’s stunning PGA Championship victory ranks with the greatest individual sports upsets ever.

Here is our list:

1) Journeyman Buster Douglas pummeling Mike Tyson in Toyko in 1990. Back then, Tyson was still “Iron Mike” and not some butterball singing along with Phil Collins in a guy flick. And Douglas was supposed to play the role of tomato can.

2) American Rulon Gardner vanquishing Greco-Roman wrestling legend Alexander Karelin at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The Russian had dominated the sport for a decade, not losing a single point in international competition. But Gardner had a big heart and, at the time, all of his toes.

3) Yang rallying to beat Woods at the PGA Championship. Tiger had been 14-0 when leading a major after 54 holes. So what if Woods isn’t quite his old self these days? This outcome was astonishing.

4) Andre Phillips shocking fellow American Edwin Moses in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Moses had won 107 consecutive 400-meter hurdles finals, beating Phillips more than 20 times in the process.

5) University of Washington wrestler Larry Owings toppling Dan Gable at the 1970 NCAA Tournament. Gable had won all 118 of his college matches for Iowa State. He went on to win Olympic gold in Munich in 1972 without losing a single point.

6) Mark Edmondson, ranked 212th in the world, throttling defend champion John Newcombe in the 1976 Australian Open final. That was Edmondson’s only Grand Slam victory. He was (and still is) the lowest-seeded player to win a major.

7) The thoroughbred Upset, um, upsetting Man O’ War in the Sanford Memorial. Man O’ War was a 100-to-1 favorite and had never loss a race.

8 ) Jack Fleck shocking Ben Hogan in the 1955 U.S. Open. Hogan had won four Open titles and Jack was, well, just a Fleck on the golf scene.

9) Young Leon Spinks outpointing heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali in a split decision in 1978. Spinks brought limited experience — just seven professional fights — but lots of energy in the ring.

10) Unseeded Mats Wilander, 17 at the time, winning the 1982 French Open at Roland Garros. To do so, Wilander managed to upset the second, third, fourth and fifth seeds. The slow surface favors surprises, but that was ridiculous.

Will CONTROVERSY DOG EAGLES?

Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie took the plunge and signed off on hiring Michael Vick.

This stirred spirited debate in various public forums, including the Internet. Here is some of the reaction from some of our favorite sports pundits:

Howard Bryant, ESPN.com: “There will be nothing clean about Vick’s return to the public eye. All is not forgiven; and for a considerable portion of the public, it might not ever be. In close competition with Kobe Bryant – and, to a lesser extent, Barry Bonds — Vick remains perhaps the most polarizing player in the recent history of American team sports. He is no longer a person, but a symbol, and his return to the NFL only increases the intensity of his symbolism.”

Mike Freeman, CBSSports.com: “Vick on his 60 Minutes interview played the part well. He seems sincere. He looks sorry. He acts sorry. Maybe time in a prison cell has indeed changed him. The problem is, we’ve seen this Vick highlight before. Vick has a history of repeating mistakes, many of them, all the time. Declaring beforehand he was going to change, only to be the same old Vick in the end. This time, Vick isn’t conning me. Not falling for it. No way, no how. Not this time, Mike Slick. Not this time.”

John Gonzalez
, Philadelphia Inquirer: “While (Jeffrey) Lurie was onstage the other day, one reporter shouted out a question that was every bit as biting and direct as some of the e-mails: ‘If this had happened to your dog,’ the journo bellowed, ‘would we still be having this news conference?’ Before Lurie could answer, one of the Eagles’ PR handlers stepped in, ended the news conference, and ushered him off the stage. I suppose that’s good staff work, but you can’t dodge those kinds of questions forever because fans and the media will keep lobbing them like grenades as long as Vick is wearing midnight green. The Eagles had better get used to this - the commotion, the distraction, the doubt, the criticism, the heated debate, all of it. Because it’s not going away.”

Greg Cote, Miami Herald: “Philly fans, renowned for their restraint, need to boo somebody but are unsure whom! Do they boo Vick on principle over his dogfighting past? Do they boo People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals as its inevitable crusade hits the city? Or do they simply bide time four more months and boo Santa Claus again?”

Mike Lupica, New York Daily News: “The Eagles signing Michael Vick was bad news for hostile animal groups and perhaps much worse news for the NFC East. I have no idea whether Vick has come out of this a better and more decent and more enlightened person. Neither does Tony Dungy or anybody else. But if he can still play — and at 29 there’s no reason to believe he can’t — the Eagles just got better. Bad news for the people who never wanted to see Vick on the field again, worse news for the Giants and the Cowboys.”

MYSTERIES OF THE UNIVERSE

Questions to ponder while wondering if the streaking Cardinals can win the John Smoltz sweepstakes and beef up their pitching staff:

MEGAPHONE

“I did everything I needed to do, except for getting the ball in the hole.”

The unfortunate Tiger Woods.

“Man O’ War was a 100-to-1 favorite and had never loss a race.” And they say you can’t write like you talk.
Michael Vick deserved to go to the federal greybar hotel about as much as Martha Stewart.

Mark Sanchez would have looked pretty good in Ram horns. Well, at least
we got a good second string “right” tackle with the second pick overall.

Vick has a history of repeating mistakes? I guess my memory is faulty here because, try as I might, I can’t recall anything that warrants that comment. Vick did a crime, he served hard time in a real prison, and he got suspended by the league. Sorry, I think his debt is paid personally…

Glad to see Yang win yesterday. It’s not that I dislike Tiger, but I believe it is in the long-term interest of the sport of golf to have this happen. I know most national media types don’t agree, but golf needs something besides Tiger Woods…

Go Cards go!

I agree Duke, no way Vick deserved the punishment he got (or will continue to get) in a world where so much hunting for sport is allowed. Not to mention where you kill people and do 1/100th the jail time. I’m no fan of Philly, but I’d rather see Vick succeed if only to stick it to the hypocrites. plus they’ve got J-Mac, so I’ll be rooting for them at least…

Tiger’s loss would mean a little more if we were ever going to hear from that guy again. plus, the media is so funny. they spend months going on and on about ‘Tiger’s lost it!’ ‘he’ll never come back from that injury!’ Then, all weekend they’re shouting ‘He’s back!’ so all of a sudden this is some titanic upset…

I want to believe the Rams are on the right track, but this team appears to have a bit of a ‘Cubs’ smell around them that can only be lifted by having the likes of Warner, Faulk, and Vermeil in the building. The other years they’ve been here without all three, they’ve been as bad as the Bengals in production and decision making (including the wasted dynasty years of ‘00 - ‘02). This may have been the best draft of the decade (not saying much) and still Lauranitis may be the only impact player of the group. I know it will take a while to undo this decade, but still…

The only way we could be more shitty right now is if we took RuPaul up the ass…I can hear Hary now: “Cubs suck, Cubs suck!”

I agree with the Douglas Tyson upset being number 1. At that time we though Iron Mike was untouchable. That knock out came out of nowhere, and Tyson had already knocked Douglas down earlier. The USA 1980 hockey was an upset, but after they beat the Czechs you got a hint that something might happen. With Douglas we all thought it would be a 90 second KO.

Tiger is the Jim Palmer(former Baltimore pitcher) of Golf. When asked about the Cy Young Award The late Catfish Hunter said, “Better give it to Palmer, with him it’s CY OR CRY”! Tiger needs to grow up and take a “How to be a Human Being Class”.
