News Flash: Cubs In Utter Disarray
With the Cardinals scuffling this week, the Cubs had their chance to cut their National League Central lead and make this weekend more interesting.
Naturally, they declined to do so. After a 7-4 loss to the Brewers Thursday afternoon, exasperated Small Bears manager Lou Piniella initially refused to speak with reporters.
The Chicago Tribune gave us a harrowing look inside the Cubs locker room after their latest fiasco.
ChicagoTribune.com blogger Steve Rosenbloom recently offered assessment of enigmatic outfielder Milton Bradley: “The Cubs’ $30 million right fielder was taken out in the third inning Wednesday night after striking out looking and after looking particularly uninspired on a ground ball. This, mind you, from the big-talking $30 million right fielder who claimed he always goes 250 percent. Or maybe he said he was just hoping to hit .250. Hard to know sometimes, you know?”
Finally, would-be pitching ace Carlos Zambrano is now willing to accept a trade out of the North Side. Here is a probing interview with the Z.
PREPARING FOR A HARSH LESSON
Florida has assembled one of the most talented college football teams in recent memory. So Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin will soon regret agitating Gators coach Urban Meyer.
You may recall that after taking the Tennessee job, Kiffin told folks he looked forward to “singing Rocky Top all night long after we beat Florida next year.”
Uh, oh.
Kiffin personally angered Meyer by wrongly accusing him of a recruiting violation, Yahoo! Sports reminded us of how Kiffin is viewed down at the Swamp:
Florida offensive lineman Matt Patchan recently referred to Kiffin as “a bozo,” and pieces of paper with Kiffin’s quote about singing “Rocky Top” after a victory on Saturday have been hanging in the Gators’ locker room since March, when players reportedly texted Meyer and told him to save some extra timeouts for the end of the game so they could soak up – and rub in – a blowout victory.
Yes, even if it’s only for one day, Kiffin’s mouth finally appears to have pinned him into a corner from which he can’t escape. Barring an upset of mammoth proportions, he’ll be given his medicine as more than 90,000 Gators fans cheer on each dose.
Finally, let us not forget the unfortunate “Wild Boys” recruiting skit from earlier this year — a scene that will live in SEC infamy.
Here is a recreation of that event.
Sigh. It’s a shame they don’t make Cubs like Mark Grace anymore.
MYSTERIES OF THE UNIVERSE
Questions to ponder while wondering why the Flames are giving 900-year-old Theo Fleury his comeback opportunity:
- Is there any chance the Redskins will try to goad Richie Incognito this week?
- Are the Rams aware that Washington has an elite tight end? Are they planning on covering Chris Cooley or letting him run free, as they did with John Carlson?
- By the way, is there a better NFL blogger than Cooley?
- Is it possible that Derek Jeter is overrated, giving the over-the-top coverage he gets in greater New York City?
- Why does Major League Baseball force also-ran teams to play out the string? Isn’t there something better they could do with their time?
QUIPS ‘R US
Here is what some of America’s leading sports pundits have been writing:
Jeff Schultz, Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “I am not making this up. I just received an email from a PR company in New York touting the next issue of ‘Success’ magazine. Imagine my surprise when Serena Williams was on the cover, with the headline, ‘A champion on the court and off.’ Unfortunately, tight deadlines prevented the magazine from including the subject’s most recent champ-like moment: ‘I swear to God, I’m [bleepin’] takin’ this ball and shovin’ it in your [bleepin’] throat . . . I swear to God.’”
Mark Kriegel, FoxSports.com: “Houston puts up 512 yards on Oklahoma State I have to wonder: is this the best defense that T. Boone Pickens can buy?”
Ray Ratto, San Francisco Chronicle, on the A’s: “Truth is . . . they are playing better baseball this month than in any of the past five - just enough, perhaps, to hang their hats on something good come winter. We say perhaps, of course, because September is a small sample size for a team that’s been out of contention since June. I mean, knocking the Texas Rangers out of the playoff race is nice and all, but it’s not really the sort of thing you put on the front of the media guide: “A’s 2010: We Eliminated a Team Whose Owner Is Broke!’”
T.J. Simers, Los Angeles Times: “It was hard to argue with the accountant, John Shaw, recommending to Georgia Frontiere she move her Rams to St. Louis, where she would collect more than $25 million a year. A woman has to shop after all. The blunder of all blunders, though, belongs to Al Davis, who has become a blithering idiot with the passage of time and so many losing years, the Rams handing the Los Angeles market to him in 1994, and Davis fumbling the opportunity.”
MEGAPHONE
“You go out from the first quarter on, from the first play on, and try to embarrass them. Not just go out there and try to win, try to embarrass them. Try to make them feel bad when they leave here. We don’t want to just beat them. We want to send a message to them, ‘We’re not backing down from you and we expect to win this game, and it’s not going to be luck, it’s not going to be a mistake.’”
Jets safety Kerry Rhodes, to the New York Daily News, on the Patriots.

I’m not a big Yankee fan, but Derek Jeter is not overrated. If any team in baseball would love to have him as their shortstop (and they would) then you can’t be overrated…

Jeter overrated? Trying to get everyone riled up are ya?
The only thing I see that’s overrated is this local rag we read daily!
Yeah, Jeter is overrated. If he played in any market other then New York he would be considered a good shortstop. However, ESPN and the East Coast media will have us believing that he is the best SS that ever played the game. The Onion’s article is a riot!! The play that was made a few years ago where he cut the throw off from the outfielder and flipped it to the catcher was treated like a genius play. There are plays made everyday that are just as good, if not better. But again, it is Jeter and the Yankees so it is the best play ever!
Ty Cobb, if you don’t like the site feel free to read something else.
Nowhere did I hear Zambrano even vaguely intimate that he’s willing to be traded! He merely said he sometimes gets “disappointed” and wishes he was away from the ballpark. I think the link has been wrongly promoted.
Jeter is not as great as he is clutch.
Playing in NY gives him lots of opportunities to make big plays.
Then the media gets to make a big deal about it.
How many of those opportunities does he get in say, Chicago.
Still, I agree most of what Tim said.
Seeing Ryan at SS is the most fun we’ve had since Ozzie.
Who thinks the Cardinals will outscore the Rams this weekend?
Gordo, were did you get that Zambrano is willing to accept a trade from that interview? Great research as usual.
Hmmm, let’s see. .317 Lifetime Batting Average. 2727 hits, will be in the 3000 club in a couple of years. 10 Time All-Star selection. Oh and I forgot Blues Fans Jeter has 4 World Series Rings. You guys must be Blues and Cubs Fans because you don’t know what it’s like to win a championship. Oops that’s right the Blues have never won a championship? So that makes CUBS fans one up on the lowly Blues crowd.
The truth hurts, Ty Cobb likes telling the truth. That’s why no one liked me when I was living.
I understand and to a degree sympathize with the hatred of the Yankees and the East Coast media overhype, etc., but anyone who thinks Derek Jeter is anything less than an automatic Hall of Fame induction has not been following baseball - or they have not been paying attention to the reality before them. The stats don’t lie - Jeter is the real deal and has been since the day he came up. The man is a bona fide superstar; get over it, Yankee-haters. He’s a first ballot shoo-in.
The Cubs? They’re toast, even if they swept us this weekend. Based on standings today - they would have to go 15-2 while the Cards go 5-10 to catch us. Ain’t gonna happen, folks. Everybody take a deep breath and prepare to lift a cold one (something worth drinking I hope, as opposed to an A-B-Outbev product) to the division champion Cardinals.
GO CARDS!
Hey Ty,
The cubs have gone over 100 years without a championship.
The Blues will not be able to top that in most of our lifetimes.
Way to take advantage of that 60+ year head start and get a WS back in 1908.
Nobody really needs to defend Jeter.
Anybody watching knows the story, you don’t need to stroke him.
Hopefully at Christmas he still has 4 WS rings not 5.
Is he even the best SS on the Yankers?
Jeter used to be overcovered, but not overrated. The Yankee teams that actually won were such a machine that didn’t rely on any one or two players so the media which always needs to crown a hero selected Jeter who made the most sense for both valid and superficial reasons (there was a funny poll on e.com about best place to be during all-star weekend this year and the winner by far was something like “clubbing with Derek Jeter as your wingman”) Quietly, his offensive production has been a little underrated since the testing started. although having monster bats behind him helps, you still have to hit it. something guys here other than Skip haven’t quite figured out yet
in defense of Gordo, ESPN also reported Zam-brainless was open to trade in a separate story from this interview…in non-defense of Gordo, a pro writer should be able to make that clearer
