Mizzou Opens With Defensive Stop
There was no pre-game handshake between the teams. As the host school, Illinois dictated what happened before the game – and Illini coach Ron Zook cited logistical concerns for passing on this sportsmanship gesture.
Both bands played on the field before the game, crowding the pre-game routine. So the only exchange came between the captains.
The Illini won the coin toss and wanted the football first. They started out on their own 28-yard line.
Juice Williams opened with a quick completion to Jarret Fayson for a first down. Quick completions to Arrelious Benn and Chris Duvall earned another first down and advanced the ball into Missouri territory.
The Illini offense is as advertised – a balanced scheme of running and ball-control passing.
The Tigers finally made the stop, though, thanks to sturdy run defense that forced the Illini into an untenable third-and-long situation.
