Saturday was “TCA Day,” the one day off for everyone during the 2-3 weeks of press tour. Morning was a marthon TV Critics Assn. meeting, then a free afternoon. I went shopping with my pal Jessica Radloff (”Campus Ladies”); we covered Rodeo Drive and then ended up at Sprinkles for cupcakes. You have to stand in line for these cupcakes, but it’s so worth it. Late afternoon, there was a reception with members of the Writers Guild, then the TCA Awards, our own version of the Emmys. They were held in the same room where the Golden Globes are handed out — it’s way smaller than it looks on TV. Almost everybody who wins is there to accept, because we let them know in advance. (The producers of “Kyle X/Y,” which won for children’s program over “Sesame Street,” joked that they were pretty sure they’d won when they didn’t see Muppets in the room.)

I’m getting to David Chase and Alec Baldwin. “The Sopranos” won two awards and Chase had two funny, different acceptance speeches. But first Baldwin won for “individual achievement in comedy” for “30 Rock.” I didn’t know he was coming, but he jogged up to the stage and told a rambling, stream-of-consciousness story about  how much  he’d always wanted to be on “The Sopranos.” An agent promised to introduce him to Chase but never did; then, years later, Baldwin was in the men’s room of the Four Seasons in New York on an extremely hot day. By the time he got there, his shirt was soaked through, so he took it off and  held it up  in front of the hand dryer. At that point, Chase walked in, and all Baldwin could think was that he was topless in a men’s room with the guy who created the greatest show in television.

When Chase got his turn, he clarified the story. He remembered the incident but said all he could think at the time was, “Oh my God, that’s Alec Baldwin, the movie star.” He didn’t even notice that he had his shirt off.

Chase picked up one of his awards from the TV critic for the Newark Star-Ledger. He said, “I’m from New Jersey. You’re from New Jersey. Tell them you can be in a diner in Jersey and all of a sudden everything will just stop.”

Also there: A big chunk of the cast of “Heroes” (program of the year); lots of folks from “The Office” (best comedy); Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton and some of the kids from “Friday Night Lights” (best new program); the producers of “Planet Earth” (two awards). John Oliver from “The Daily Show” was the funniest host we’ve had in years. The only disappointment — Mary Tyler Moore, who got a lifetime achievement award, couldn’t come.

Here’s the full list of the winners.

Well, the TCA got it right, even if the Emmy idiots didn’t: Connie Britton, Kyle Chandler and Friday Night Lights. I am SO looking forward to their second season!

How is it that Heroes gets “Program of the Year” but not Outstanding New Show?
Is it a spread the wealth thing?
