Tonight’s premieres: Check out ‘Chuck’

Long list of premieres and season premieres tonight, as I’m sure you noted in my Critic’s Picks. Be sure to check out “Chuck” (7 p.m. on Channel 5), with future-big-star Zachary Levi as a nerd turned spy. It’s witty, lovable and has very entertaining action. And I see no reason kids can’t watch, if you’re looking for a whole-family TV experience.

I found “Journeyman” (9 p.m. on Channel 5) both confusing and boring at the same time, with a trite premise underlying the time travel. But I know some Kevin McKidd fans are looking forward to it, and I’d love to hear what you think if you try it out. Next week’s second episode is a bit better, by the way; at least the jumps in time are easier to follow.

If you like CBS’ Monday night comedies, you’ll probably enjoy “Big Bang Theory.” I’m not a fan, except for “How I Met Your Mother.” (And, RIP, “The Class.”)

I watched the NBC pilots on OnDemand last week … it’s a nice way to decide what you want to see (or what to program on your DVR). I liked all of them (Chuck, Life, Bionic Woman, Journeyman) to varying degrees. Not sure the average viewer will give Chuck more than 3 minutes (it starts out a little crazy). I want to see where Life goes. Bionic Woman has great production values and a lot of mystery. Journeyman was fine … not sure it’ll stick around long enough for us to know why he and his old flame are time travelling.

I’m not going to waste my time watching any new series that might not be around in 4 or 8 weeks. The networks have blown any goodwill viewers had towards investing time in new series that are subsequently cancelled mid-series. I’ll wait for positive buzz, good reviews and the season DVD so I’m assured I’ll be able to watch a quality series all the way through.

“Chuck” was very good. Definitely a keeper. “Journeyman” waltzes around a potentially great idea (although “Quantum Leap” and even “Time Tunnel” (yes, I’m that old) did it better and with more charisma from the lead actors), but Journeyman is going to have to pick up the pace, the acting, and the continuity to keep viewers.

Thanks for recommending “Chuck”. I saw all the commercials on NBC over the past few weeks, but I was undecided. But I watched it, and I am ready for a new episode. I love Chuck’s character and also his friend Morgan. I hope they keep it, unlike past shows I fell in love with (mainly Studio 60).
