Here’s my list, which ran Dec. 30 in the A&E section. I’d welcome your choices and might put together a follow-up story out of them.

  • “The Sopranos,” HBO. You could picture David Chase laughing as he ended Tony Soprano’s story with a shocking blackout that every fan interpreted in a different fashion. Many were annoyed, others applauded. But Chase, as always, went his own way, and his singular vision made “The Sopranos” one of the greatest dramas - on TV or anywhere - of our time.
  • “Mad Men,” AMC. Matthew Weiner, who wrote for “The Sopranos,” brought his own genius to this strikingly original and addictive drama, set in the world of advertising in the 1960s and starring heartthrob Jon Hamm as the complicated hero.
  • “Pushing Daisies,” ABC. Like nothing else in prime time, this whimsical, candy-colored dramedy about a pie baker and his back-from-the-dead girlfriend makes us laugh and cry and marvel weekly. The most amazing twist in this fairy tale? Viewers (not just critics) fell in love with it, too.
  • “30 Rock,” NBC. Alec Baldwin gets plenty of laughs for his dead-on portrayal of a network TV executive, but Tina Fey deserves a triple helping of kudos. As executive producer, writer and star, she has turned the comedy, in its second season, into a brilliant satire that is also falling-down funny. And never forget Jack McBrayer as odd, lovable Kenneth the Page.
  • “Lost,” ABC - the season finale. In its third year, “Lost” got off to a shaky start, segregating the Big 3 (Jack, Kate and Sawyer) from the rest of the castaways. But after a planned hiatus, the drama came back together in a big way, leading to a mind-blowing season finale that flashed forward rather than back, giving us a baffling and fascinating glimpse of life beyond the island.
  • And more: “The Daily Show”/”The Colbert Report,” Comedy Central; “Planet Earth,” Discovery; “Damages,” FX; “The War,” PBS; “Dexter,” Showtime; “Dirty Sexy Money,” ABC; “The Riches,” FX; “Heroes,” NBC; “Brotherhood,” Showtime; “The Shield,” FX; “Friday Night Lights,” NBC (except for the murder/cover-up); and of course, despite an uneven season, “The Office,” NBC.

Two shows that deserve recognition are “Rescue Me” and “Saving Grace”. Not only are the performances by Dennis Leary and Holly Hunter breathtaking at times, the screenplays are outstanding in their realistic portrayal of the worlds these two deeply flawed characters careen about.

Guilty pleasure: Antiques Roadshow. They find some amazing stuff.
