‘Idol’ ratings down

Tuesday night’s return of “American Idol” was down 4 million viewers from last year, according to preliminary Nielsens. The estimate is 33.2 million viewers, down from 37.4 million for its season premiere in 2007. I’m wondering if this is the beginning of a trend — not necessarily of the demise of “Idol,” because 33 million is still a whopping number, but of television. The writers are on strike, there are fewer new episodes of anything to watch, replacement programming sometimes sucks, and people are scouting around for something else to do. Look for reading, bowling and board games to make comebacks?

Rentals.

This may just be the right time (during the strike) for Apple’s iTunes to launch movie rentals (starting today). I just started downloading “300″ from them. It looks like it will take about 80 minutes to download. Then I have 30 days to start watching it; once I start, I have 24 hours to finish (I think they can be watched multiple times, if you’re into that…). At $3.99 it’s more than my NetFlix account costs per month, per movie, but it’s almost on-demand.

“Idol” and L&O are the only things on tonight, so my poor recorders are getting a well-deserved rest.
