Writers strike: an end in sight?

I started hearing last week that the informal talks had made progress and that a new contract, ending the strike by the Writers Guild of America, could be close. Of course, we heard that before Christmas, too, and nothing came of it. So I’ve been very cautious about getting hopes — yours and mine — up this time, but progress continues to be reported. Many things could still go wrong, but there could be a draft contract by the end of the week. If a contract were finalized and voted on favorably by Guild members, what then? Networks and studios would have to decide which shows to rush back into production and for how many episodes. Of course, I’d like to see more “Heroes” and “Lost.” I’d like for my friend Phyllis to be able to get back to work on “The Office.” I’m guessing that comedies might be able to get up and running faster than dramas, but I know the networks would like to wind up with at least four new episodes of drama hits in time for May sweeps.

Do you think the upcoming Oscars–and the possibility of a cancellation or no-show stars–is driving the serious talks?
