David Cook wins ‘American Idol’?

What do I know? But I did think he was awfully good on “Music of the Night,” from “Phantom of the Opera,” on Andrew Lloyd Webber night — a theme that must have been chilling for everybody but David Archuletta when they heard it. David A. was reliably fine on “Think of Me,” also from “Phantom,” and here’s a good time to reveal that I’m something of a closet Andrew Lloyd Webber fan and know all these songs pretty well. Carly Smithson wasn’t bad on “Jesus Christ Superstar,” but the others (especially Jason Castro, who I know is beloved by some Tube Talkers) were pretty awful on their chosen show tunes.

The best, however, was David C., even though Simon wasn’t fond of the song choice. I wonder, though, if I’m the only one thinks he seems to need a nice, long shower and shampoo, maybe even a good scrubbing with a brush. Yes, I know grubbiness is a look, and he’s probably actually quite clean. For what it’s worth, I had this same opinion about Bruce Springsteen, back in the day, when he didn’t seem to have washed his hair or his clothes in months.  Since he married Patti Scialfa, though, she’s apparently been in charge of buying the soap.

I digress, however. My prediction that Brooke White, who really botched the “Evita” song, probably the hardest song in “Evita,” will go home this week.

Spare me! David C. was hardly the best. Syesha was the best, followed by Carly, and then David. A. You need to get over your David C. infatutation. He isn’t that great, he hasn’t won yet, and probably isn’t going to win.

I agree, David C was the best! Whether he wins 1st place or 2nd or 3rd doesn’t matter– he’s already won. He’ll have a sucessful career! I look forward to his album

Larry, are you an Archuleta fan? If so, need I say more?
This performance proves David Cook’s resilience. He can sing ANYTHING. This was a step completely out of the box for him, and I reckon that he completely pulled it off. Congratulations to him.

Brooke was the only thing saving Castro from elimination. But you never know.

I thought it was odd that Paula told Brooke that you “never stop” like she did and start over. Then we get Cowell and Jackson saying she did the right thing and audience goes happy/crazy!
Brooke’s performance was so bad that even Paula was momentarily speechless!

One more thought - when are these people actually going to sing something a little more up tempo? If it wasn’t for Mercado & Smithson the other singers would’ve put me to sleep. And that’s hard to do with Sir Andrew’s music.

I dont know that David Cook was the best last night, but it def proved he can sing anything, even when it is out of his genre. I think its very obvious he is by far the most talented and SHOULD win the whole thing.

Paula must be on the show for comic relief. Her personal body of work hardly suggests vocal expertise, and her inability to provide frank criticism to most performers (especially physically appealing males) is obvious.

While Simon Cowell may come across as harsh, his career accomplishments speaks for itself with respect to his ability to recognize commercially viable talent.

Simon commended Brooke for taking the risk to get it right. Once she got untracked, she managed to overcome her rocky start.

David Cook can flat out sing. While the song was not the most appealing, he certainly nailed the performance.

Syesha without doubt gave the performance of the evening. That song could not have been performed any better than she did it. Vocals, movement, showmanship, appeal, she had it all.

Castro’s performance was the weakest of the group. The song he exposed his vocal limitations, which are many.

Syesha was fabulous - she showed Broadway is where she belongs. Not familiar with that song, but because of her performance I really liked it.
Brooke - the only other person to sing that song is Madonna (song was not in the original stage version) did not come close and I did not feel the emotion that Sir Andrew told her she needed. LIttle bored halfway through.
Carly - ok job - but she forgot a lot of the actual lyrics, but covered it up (unlike Brooke) by contiuning to sing and get through it.
David A - nice change up on the version, but with so many “guy” songs by ALW - why pick a chick song?
Jason - words cannot describe how disappointed I was in the song choice and the performance.
David C - As ALW said, the sexist song he ever wrote and has one of the biggest “notes” in a musical for a guy and he hit out of the park. That is one of my favorite songs in a musical and I think he did great.

Bottom 3 - definitely - Brooke, Jason and no clue on the 3rd because the other 4 did a good job.

David Cook is by far the closet thing this show has to a recording artist that will be able to be promoted and sell their music. Carly isn’t quite as good as everyone is making her out to be. Brooke doesn’t really belong either because she can’t be a pop/rock star, she’s better suited as a songwriter. She just needs to shut up when the judges are talking and not make a comment back on everything single thing they say to here. Syesha is just kind of forgotten because there are others and she hasn’t hurt herself with her clevage showing outfits. J Castro is in the same category as Brooke….and dude get a hair cut and get some bigger pants. David Archuletta is good, don’t get me wrong but he isn’t a pop/rock star either. He has a voice on him but he is going tear up the Chrisitan genre

I can’t say I’m a big David Cook fan. He’s a good singer, but I don’t think he’ll be a breakout star like Chris Daughtery. Last year a lot of people raved about Blake, and he turned into a whole lot of nothing. A lot of people raved about Taylor Hicks, and he was even more of a nothing. It’s really too early to judge who will win, and the music buying taste of the American public will remain a mystery forever and ever.

By the way, Simon has been wrong a time or two on musical talent.

Robbi #7 said, “no clue on the 3rd”

How about Carly, who failed to master the lyrics and appeared to believe bouncing her bosom could atone for that. Catherine McPhee’s chest wasn’t enough to win the contest for her, and Carly isn’t in Catherine’s league in the looks department.

Not to mention that Carly’s tatt sleeve is a huge turnoff, and her freak-show entourage (especially the boyfriend with tatts on his face) became old and tiresome long ago.
