‘American Idol’: the final three perform

Proving I could not be a judge on this show (not that I was much of a contender to replace Paula anyway), the performance I liked best Tuesday night was Syesha’s “Fever.” Which was dismissed by all — but if she recorded an album of jazzy, R&Bish standards, even something like an Ella Fitzgerald tribute CD, it might be really enjoyable. And she is so beautiful, surely she’ll make it somewhere in entertainment. As for the show in general, I appreciated the brisk pace, with nine songs in an hour. But was it fair for the judges to make such a point of criticizing song choice when they themselves chose one of the three and the producers chose another? I felt as if the judges (Simon in particular) were just trying to one-up the person who chose by slamming the selection, which was not fair to the performers.

I liked Syesha also, but was it necessary for Paula to tell her (twice) that she looked stunning/lovely? Paula really didn’t have much to say about her performances. I liked her version of “Fever” also but was hoping she’d sing one of my all-time favorites “Stormy Weather”.

Judges weren’t happy with David A’s “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg. Randy called it an “interesting choice” and Simon said the “song and lyrics were horrible”. Hmmm, wasn’t that the Producer’s choice for him?

And what is it with Abdul giving David Cook a “standing O” for “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”? I didn’t think he was that great singing it. Even Randy called it “predictable”. And what was with his “happy belated Mother’s Day” to his Mom? Where the heck was he two days ago - that’s not belated, it’s unforgivable.

Maybe it’s just me and like you, I couldn’t be a judge on this show. I feel that some times they get it right, other times…no.

They Promised The Moon, The Stars, And Heaven Above. And just like Charlie Brown I got a rock.

As a songwriter who’s parents were songwriters, like them I write because I love it. It’s never been about the money. But when the NUMBER ONE SHOW ON TELEVISION says they’re looking for some amateur to write the Next Great American Idol Finale Song. Wow! The first thing that crossed my mind was…..MILLIONS! Millions of people. Millions of cd’s. Millions of dollars. Millions. I’m betting I’m not the only one…….of Millions.

It’s Time For Some Answers!
This is the second year in a row that American Idol has had a songwriting contest. Since the contest ended last year I’ve researched the contestants from last year and this year….FYI there were over 25,000 entries last year at $10.00 for each song. 20 songs were then chosen out of the 25,000 for an online vote. The winner’s song is then performed on the American Idol Finale. The problem I have is that one of THIS years Top 20 Finalist is a Co-writer of LAST years Top 20 Winner. Somebody from American Idol has some explaining to do.

Gail,

I thought Syesha’s PERFORMANCE of Fever was great, I just thought the choice could’ve been better. (Speaking of selection, have the producers who picked “Longer” for Archie ever listened to the lyrics? It was totally wrong for a 17 year old). I’m going out on a limb and predict that Archie gets the boot tonight. I know, I know. Hear me out. When I tried to vote last night, guess whose lines were the busiest? The initials were not D.A.

Forgetting all the song choices, if I look at just the performances and who had the best vocals, Cook and Mercado were the best last night.

OK, I don’t get it. All sorts of people have been raving about Cook’s version of “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”. I just wanted Roberta Flack to waddle out and slap him in the face. It was by far his worst performance of the night, and was totally cringe-worthy. HE WAS OFF KEY! Through most of it, he sounded as stoned as Jason Castro (thank God he’s gone). For my money, Cook’s best performance was the second song, although it was the worst song (in terms of writing).

Cook’s version of “First Time…” made my fillings hurt.

The awful use of his head voice/falsetto in the first verse showed his lack of vocal prowess outside his comfort range of power rock anthems/ballads. Singing in the upper register, quietly and with control, is one mark of an accomplished singer. Then the next to last note of “Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” was about a quarter-step flat, until he slid into the last note.

There’s something about David A.’s looks that makes me want to change the channel, but at least he demonstrates vocal talent.

In all, I thought Cook’s performance was the weakest of the three by far.
