‘Dancing With the Stars’: girl power!
She was a zillion times better than anyone else. She did everything the guys did, and she did it backwards, in high heels. She got perfect 10’s on every one of her final routines. But all that was no assurance that Kristi Yamaguchi would win “DWTS,” which has favored men (four winners) over women (just one female champion, Kelly Monaco in Season 1, and her victory over John O’Hurley is still controversial).
But Yamaguchi overcame an early backlash (she was too good to start with; as a figure skater, she had an unfair advantage) to win the big, ugly disco ball trophy. Even runner-up Jason Taylor gallantly admitted she deserved it. The guys hoisted her and partner Mark Ballas on their shoulders and carried them around the stage, a nice 2 minutes in a ridiculously bloated 2-hour finale. I can’t really complain, though; I watched the finale in what I’ll call quick-step time.

My kids and I are wondering why ABC gives out that ugly, sparkly ball trophy as a prize? We have suggested to ourselves that it would be better for each “Star” competing on the show to sponsor a charity of their choice, and the winner’s charity would win a financial prize. That might be an incentive for even more people to tune in and watch, and vote. BTW,I was rooting for Christian, and when he came in 3rd, I joined forces with my 14 year old daughter and rooted for Kristy. Tivo is the only way to watch the finale!
