‘Dancing With the Stars’: the sympathy card
Yesterday, Cristian de la Fuente was denying that he faked his “DWTS” injury to get sympathy, but coming up with a triumph over adversity might not have been a bad idea. Look how much good fainting did Marie Osmond last season. And Cristian’s competitors haven’t avoided the sympathy card this season. When everybody was saying Kristi Yamaguchi was too good, she brought out the pictures of baby Kristi in the two casts for her club feet. Derek Hough’s wrenched neck apparently kept Shannon Elizabeth around a while longer. And last night, in her little confessional, Marissa Jaret Winokur casually mentioned having had cancer.
Nevertheless, I think she’ll be the one to exit tonight. Her dancing is probably the weakest of those remaining, although she’s certainly one of the best performers. But the show has done her no favor by putting her in such ridiculous hair and makeup. Kristi too — they look like clowns.

Just like American Idol, I think it gets down to a popularity contest — somewhat — at this point. The advantage that DWTS has over AI is that the judges votes count. I think Marissa is history this week too, with Mario right behind her. I think the sympathy votes will no longer be an issue by the final three, because there is no way Cristian will beat out Jason Taylor and Kristi Yamaguchi for the finals. I’m going to look forward to the finals because I think it’s going to be awesome this year.
